The Stonington Public Library has a new librarian, the American Legion building changes hands, and Zone C fishermen talk issues surrounding bait at their latest meeting. This, and much more, inside. 


Local band 3 Mile Line raises thousands at a rock ‘n roll concert to benefit the ball field. A draft audited financial statement shows the Island Nursing Home ended its fiscal year on June 30, 2021, with nearly $5 million in total assets. And a Stonington resident comes to the rescue of a young osprey that fell out of its nest on the Deer Isle-Sedgwick Bridge.

The Island Nursing Home board president announces her resignation, and the town hires an attorney to try to prevent the sale of the nursing home’s bed rights. A community group also seeks to prevent the sale of INH bed rights and begins a campaign to unite public efforts and circulate a petition. And, at its August meeting, the CSD 13 school board discusses issues of safety, staffing and on-campus Narcan use, among other topics.  

The Island Nursing Home gets a license extension and meets with the Peninsula League of Towns and the public. A public comment by an INH board member creates confusion about whether the planning board denied a housing permit to the Island Nursing Home. And Stonington trucks in potable water and encourages water conservation. 

The Island Fishermen’s Wives Association inducts three to the IFWA Hall of Fame. A partnership between Project Launch and CSD 13 receives a grant from the Maine Department of Education in support of career exploration and postsecondary readiness. The CSD 13 school board accepts the resignation of Deer Isle-Stonington High School’s principal. And area folks seek ways to beat the heat!

Lobster boats vied for the finish at Stonington’s annual race event. The Island Nursing Home will not reopen as a skilled nursing facility. And the lobster industry faces another legal setback after a federal judge ruled that new rules are needed to prevent North Atlantic right whale entanglement in fishing gear. 

The Island celebrates the Fourth with festivities—and flamingos! A schooner out of Camden runs hard aground on a ledge off Stonington. And Haystack Mountain School of Crafts hires a search firm to conduct a national search for its new executive director. 

The tax rate goes up in Deer Isle and down in Stonington, as tax bills will soon be on their way to property owners. Democrat Holly Eaton and Republican Jason Joyce, candidates for state office, participate in a candidates’ breakfast with the community. And the Island is gearing up to celebrate Independence Day with everything from a road race and a parade to fireworks and food!

Sticks of dynamite are discovered—and destroyed—in Oceanville. A public discussion about possible uses for the Island Nursing Home remains unscheduled. And the Island Community Center plans a 20th anniversary celebration!

Deer Isle-Stonington High School graduates 20 students at its June 12 commencement ceremony. Deer Run residents seek an in-person, island-wide meeting with the Island Nursing Home board. And the University of Maine is leading a research project to map Maine’s fishing efforts in an effort to minimize conflict from potential future offshore wind development. 

Students from Deer Isle-Stonington Elementary School learn about ghost traps, mud and ocean creatures as part of their Harbor Days outdoor education lessons. The CSD 13 school board meeting is well attended and includes a proposed athletic plan for the upcoming school year. And longtime UPS driver Jimmy Cook celebrates his retirement!

The community marks Memorial Day with a remembrance service at the Veterans Memorial. Community School District 13 holds a district budget meeting. And the flamingos are coming—to this year’s Deer Isle-Stonington Independence Day celebration, that is!

Island Heritage Trust’s Wings, Waves & Woods Festival returned to the Island after a two-year hiatus, to the delight of birders and outdoor enthusiasts alike. The future of fire service on the Island will require expenditures for new equipment and more manpower—at a hefty cost. And Deer Isle-Stonington High School’s drinking water fails the PFAS, or “forever chemicals,” test.

And Stonington’s Main Street is set to see a bevy of paving, sanitary district and water company projects this summer.

The Island Nursing Home board of directors receives a report from Covenant Health that concludes reopening is unlikely. The Peninsula and islands are seeing a COVID-19 surge. And Stonington is named the most lucrative fishing port in Maine—again!

Consolidated School District 13 shares its proposed budget with the Deer Isle select board. Substance abuse disorder activist and advocate Wendy Allen shares her story at the Stonington Opera House. And Deer Isle-Stonington Elementary School Principal Tara McKechnie will leave her post at the end of the school year. 

School Union 76 names a new superintendent, due to start in July. Members of Stonington United Methodist Church vote to close the church. Stonington and Deer Isle work together to seek grants and tackle climate change. And the Maine Aquaculture Association makes a donation to the Maine Lobsterman Association’s legal defense fund.

The Island Nursing Home expects to receive Covenant Health’s report on whether it can afford to reopen by week’s end. Opera House Arts is hosting a presentation featuring recovery advocate Wendy Allen, in collaboration with Maine Speaks. And a benefit concert featuring local performers is planned for later this month at the Stonington Opera House to benefit World Central Kitchen’s work in Ukraine. 

Local and regional concerns about PFAS, or “forever chemicals,” persist as a Castine resident seeks more transparency and a MMA science professor researches possible risks. The Island Community Center is holding a pop-up clinic April 19 to offer a fourth dose of the COVID-19 vaccine. And Island cheerleaders are set to compete in the second of two national competitions later this month in Orlando, Fla.

Fisheries management council proposes larger minimum sizes for legal lobsters. Stonington community members revisit efforts to revitalize the old ballfield on School Street. Gov. Janet Mills signs Rep. Genevieve McDonald’s bill to expand access to syringe exchange services into law. And Deer Isle-Stonington High School will not field softball or baseball teams this spring. 

St. Brendan’s the Navigator shows support for the Ukrainian people. The Island Employee Cooperative exits bankruptcy. A fishing nonprofit asks Island towns to pass a moratorium on corporate aquaculture. And it’s not too late to find and remove browntail moth webs!

A report expected from Covenant Health, Inc. on the viability of reopening the Island Nursing Home is delayed until mid-April. Maine’s Department of Marine Resources is set to meet with fishermen at the March 31 Lobster Zone Council C meeting, though not about recent whale rules. And Stonecutters Kitchen announces plans to open for dine-in service May 26. 

Stonington’s Sanitary District receives an excellence award from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. Sen. Susan Collins secures federal funding that will support the Town of Stonington’s purchase of Odd Fellows Hall. The towns of Brooklin and Sedgwick put plans to create a nonprofit broadband internet utility on hold in light of a conflict with funding sources. And Deer Isle’s select board makes plans to purchase a new plow truck. 

Deer Isle voters approve funds for Island Workforce Housing at the March 5 Town Meeting, while Stonington voters approve nearly all of the articles presented at their Town Meeting. NOAA officers make a surprise visit to the Fish Pier—and come away with a earful of feedback. And the Harbor Café reopens with new owners and many familiar faces!

Deer Isle and Stonington voters will convene for their respective town meetings on Saturday, March 5. The Maine Forest Service is encouraging an all-hands-on-deck approach to identifying and eradicating browntail moth webs. A Deer Isle-Stonington alumna has been named to the Maine Basketball Hall of Fame. And Stonington’s Little Houses will celebrate 75 years this summer!  

Incumbent Donna Brewer, Stonington’s select board chair, and challenger Dick Larrabee Sr. share a bit about their desire to run for the select board seat. A costly leak in an unoccupied seasonal home leads to wasted water—and questions about how to prevent it from happening again. Deer Isle’s Holly Eaton announces her candidacy for House District 15. And the Opiate-Free Island Partnership celebrates five years of its needle exchange program.  

The 2021 statewide landed value of Maine’s lobster fishery sets a new record. School Union 76 Interim Superintendent Bob England resigns. Deer Isle-Stonington Elementary School science teacher Mickie Flores receives the Presidential Award for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching. And two nominees from Ellsworth are selected for the open Senate District 7 seat that will be filled by special election on June 14. 

The Stonington select board chooses Chelsea Ciomei to serve out the unexpired term on the Community School District 13 board. Deer Isle selectmen approve a budget that includes increases for inflation and climate change. Gov. Mills and the Maine congregational delegation seek to support lobstermen with an ask to delay the implementation of new whale rule regulations. And the area adds another layer to its snowscape!

The consultant hired by the Island Nursing Home is expected to submit its recommendations in mid-February. The January 29 blizzard—and equipment woes—put plow drivers to the test as Stonington lends Deer Isle a helping hand. Island schools shift to remote learning as COVID-19 continues to surge locally. And the Mariner’s boys basketball team seizes its first win of the season! 

Winter weather and delayed repairs are disrupting schools and creating headaches for School Union 76 administration. An award from the U.S. Department of Agriculture will benefit the Gulf of Maine Research Institute and fund an aquaculture workforce training program. And the all-outdoor Winterfest sponsored by the Healthy Island Project is a success! 

State Rep. Genevieve McDonald announces her candidacy for the Senate seat newly vacated by Sen. Louie Luchini, as he resigns to begin a new job. Applicants for the Consolidated School District 13 school board seats are asked to make presentations to the select board. Paul Sacaridiz, the executive director of the Haystack Mountain School of Crafts, is leaving his position at the end of April. And the MLK Jr. Day storm creates headaches for the Island and its essential workers.
