Magazine Description

In this issue

EQMM came into the world 75 years ago with an issue dated “Fall 1941,” and this year’s September/October issue is the one we’ve chosen to correlate to that first outing. We’ve designed these pages to examine and celebrate the magazine’s past, bring its traditions into the present, and look ahead to the years to come. Leading the fiction lineup is a special story from our archives: Stanley Ellin’s famous 1948 fiction debut “The Specialty of the House.” This tale is an important one not only to EQMM’s history but to that of the mystery genre. We learn more about the magazine’s early years in special features by Marvin Lachman (“1941: The Year Ellery Queen’s Mystery Magazine Was Born,” which sets the first issue’s publication in historical context) and Jeffrey Marks (“In the Beginning,” which discusses how the idea for the magazine was born, and the logistics of its startup). Settling us further into that moment is Jon L. Breen’s “A Week Without War,” a fiction puzzler that revolves around EQMM’s first issue, and even uses its pages as a clue.
