In this issue

It’s the last issue of 2015, and of EQMM’s 74th year—join us as we prepare to enter the final quarter of our first century with a volume fittingly layered with all different sorts of crime stories. Kicking it all off is an entry in the Readers Award winning series starring P.I. Julius Katz, “Julius Katz and the Giftwrapped Murder” by Dave Zeltserman. Another popular returning character, this time in a tricky police procedural, is Brooklyn cop Joe Rizzo (see “Rizzo’s Good Cop” by Lou Manfredo). In the historical category, we have Judith Cutler’s dark tale “Mr. Gladstone’s Floorboard,” and if you like domestic suspense, there are several riveting pieces you won’t want to miss: “The Siege” by Hilary Davidson, in which a second wife goes head to head with her clever stepson; “Snap” by Bill Pronzini, in which weather creates shut-ins at a winter retreat, with explosive consequences; Penny Hancock’s wry “I’ll Be There For You,” in which a mother and daughter conspire to solve the problem of a stalker; Susan Koefod’s “Open-Ended,” in which a recent widow set off on a cross-country train voyage; and Ed Wyrick’s “One, Two, Skip a Few,” whose child narrator doesn’t know what to believe about her family—and neither will you! In the Ellery Queen tradition, we have some classical puzzle mysteries as well; the Passport to Crime Department has a stunner of an “impossible crime” tale (see “The Spider” by Kōga Saburō), and an amateur detective/reporter solves a whodunit set on Martha’s Vineyard in R.J. Koreto’s nuanced Department of First Stories debut “The Missing Motive.” The December issue also contains our 2015 index and Readers Award ballot—don’t miss your chance to cast a vote and help determine what we include in future issues!
