There are bear species native to every continent except Australia and
Antarctica (though Africa’s native bears are now extinct). So it’s not surprising that the art of teddy bear making has also spread around the world — although there are no bear artists living in the Antarctic, as far as
we know. This issue, as part of our continuing Bears Around the World series, we visit with artists from such far-flung locales as Belgium, Singapore,
and South Africa.
Thanks to the Internet, of course, it’s possible to admire the work of
bear makers across the globe, for artists to share their experience with each other, and to find inspirations for new creations. Inevitably, some of

Teddy bears and children’s charities go hand in paw, especially at this time of year. Teddy and friend collectors, of course, are familiar with the good work that Good Bears of the World (www.goodbearsoftheworld.org) pursues
year-round, working to supply bears to children in need of comfort. This
month, we’re also pleased to feature on our cover the 12th incarnation of “Teddy B. Caring,” manufactured by Gund for the Office Depot Foundation. Each holiday season, Office Depot sells these cuddly guys, with a portion of the sales going to a charity benefiting children — find out more about this year’s bear and the anti-bullying program it will help support on Page 18.

In this issue, we continue our Bears Around the World series with a stop in the United Kingdom, visiting with the artists behind Blee Bears, Bear Treasures, and Madabout Bears, as well as rounding up a sampling of several other creations from U.K. artists. We hope you enjoy the issue!
