Occasionally, we are lucky enough to encounter
someone who profoundly changes who we are for the better. Eloise “Mom” Goodreau was one such person in my life. I met her in Denver at one of the first Kish & Co. events. She immediately
embraced me like I was her long-lost granddaughter.
Growing up, my grandparents had not been involved
in my life, so I welcomed the love she shared with me.
She is really the only real grandparent I’ve ever known.
From that point on, every time I saw her, she would light up with absolute joy. Sometimes,
she would drop a letter in the mail to tell me what was happening in her life and to find out about mine. My soul smiled when I received a letter from Eloise. She showed me the definition of love in a way I had never quite seen before.

International artists are the focus of this issue of DOLLS, starting with Ukrainian artist Helena Oplakanska, whose one-of-a-kind (OOAK) polymer-clay sculpts
are often inspired by a poem or novel. Then there’s Diamond-Award winning artist Lorella Falconi, an Italian-born artist now living in Canada, who began her
dollmaking career working in porcelain and is now known for her ball-jointed doll
creations. Dutch artist Tine Kamerbeek leans towards whimsical fantasy creations
sculpted from air-dry clay. And another 2013 Diamond Award winner, Mayra Garza of Mexico, finds her inspiration in baby and child dolls.

It’s time once again for one of my favorite issues of the year — the issue where we announce the Public’s Choice winners for our annual DOLLS Awards of Excellence, voted on by DOLLS readers. And what a turnout this year! More than 1,500 of you took the time to mail in your ballot or vote online. We’ll be announcing the details for next year’s competition in our January 2014 issue, so stay tuned!
My other favorite part of our December issue is getting a look at the holiday
treats in store for us, coming from the major dollmakers and individual artists in
the months to come. Whether you’re looking for a gift for a budding young collector
or finding goodies to add to your wish list, you’re sure to find plenty of interest
in this issue!

When I saw Integrity Toys’ new Beauty and the Beast releases, the daring and exciting
role reversal the dolls represent was immediately obvious. Beast is wild and free with long, unkempt locks, knee-high boots, and a hybrid bustier gown and leggings. She’s a vixen and you know she owns whatever she sets out to possess. And don’t mess with her, or she will eat you alive. Beauty, on the other hand, is attractive and timid and almost inexplicably lured by the power of Beast. His facial expression suggests he doesn’t know
if it’s in his best interest to associate with Beast, but he also knows he has no choice. He’s helpless before her power.
Turn to Page 48 to see Integrity Toys’ innovative and mesmerizing take on the classic fairy tale. I hope you enjoy the duo as much as I do.

This issue, we take a look at ball-jointed dolls (BJDs) and BJD artists — but what does that mean, exactly? Ball jointing has been used on dolls for well over a century, and probably on the majority of dolls manufactured today. When you hear people talking about BJDs nowadays, they’re mainly referring to a particular type of doll, one that was designed with the idea that its owner could easily customize it to their liking — not just giving it a change of clothes, but swapping out the eyes, changing the wig, and more! Many BJDs are available unpainted, or with just a very basic face paint, so that the collectors can do it themselves. In short, making it as easy as possible for a doll collector to get
involved in the creative process to whatever extent they choose.

We feature some great artists in this issue, but my mind has been on
another subject for the last couple of days. Doll collectors, by and large,are some of the most civil, generous, and accepting people I’ve met. There are at least as many subcategories of doll collector as there are in any other hobby — antiques enthusiasts, artist-doll collectors, fashion-doll mavens, BJD
collectors, reborn fans, etc. But for the most part, doll collectors enjoy what they enjoy and are perfectly happy to let other fans enjoy other kinds of dolls.

This issue of Haute Doll, has pulled me in despite circumstances. I
never cease to be amazed by the originality and beauty put forth by doll designers. Take Superdoll’s new line — Monoglam. Rich with vibrant, yet muted, monochromatic hues,
these girls interpret a garden party in their creators’ signature style. JAMIEshow also introduces steamy new releases from its Havana Nights line, not to mention the talented 3-D portraiture of Noel Cruz and the inspired couture of Cholo Ayuyao. There’s also a classy and chic coat dress pattern for Urban Vita on page 57. And be sure to check out
the amazing “Paper Figure” by Haute Doll’s very own Bill Kuffel on page 68. These and

Like every great artist, she’s spent her career refining her skills, trying new things,and developing a unique style.
