This month's cover artist, KAWS, has become one of the most collected and sought-after fine artists of the twenty-first century, but is doing so in a way where his scope has become bigger, but maintains a devoted and rabid following of young adults who still connect with his roots in street and toy culture. The May 2016 issue features artists with big aspirations and transformative perception: Tom Sachs with Satan Ceramics, Aesop Rock and his visual music, alongside the emergent works of Josh Sperling.

Juxtapoz is excited to announce our Fall 2023 Quarterly, featuring an exclusive interview and cover story with famed, influential Japanese artist, Takashi Murakami. This is Takashi's second cover with the magazine and his first since our museum collaboration, Juxtapoz x Superflat, opened at the Vancouver Art Gallery in 2017. 

We use the term “monster” a lot in popular culture, almost to a fault. There is a fascination with these terrors of such abnormal size because we can also relate to them. A monster isn’t so much a thing but a metaphor, an embodiment of something deep within ourselves and our imagination. Godzilla wasn’t just about a gigantic prehistoric lizard wreaking havoc on Tokyo; it was a story of the fear of nuclear war, or, what we as humans were capable of as monsters ourselves. And in the 21st century, the monster that terrorizes us isn’t so much the threat of war (although that is still rather pertinent these days), but the myriad radical shifts we have made through science and technology, things so unfathomable as to be greater than what we define as human. With that are new kinds of anxiety as we seek our role and our potential in what we call the universe. This is a reality that Takashi Murakami, through his artwork and own technology-based projects, has confronted. This fall, he opens Takashi Murakami: Unfamiliar People — Swelling of Monsterized Human Ego at the Asian Art Museum.

The Fall Quarterly isn’t so much about monsters but the ways in which we bend reality, contort the human form and redefine selfhood. Painters like Arjen and Peggy Kuiper elongate and enlarge the body in unimaginable ways. Taravat Talepasand, Genevieve Gaignard, and Zoé Blue M. create paintings and collages that reengage with the limits and endless possibilities of self-hood. You can’t help but think of the ghostlike composition of the figures in the paintings of Cinga Samson, almost religious and sensual, as he asks himself, “How do you paint beauty and terror?”


Juxtapoz is excited to announce their Summer 2023 Quarterly, featuring exclusive artwork and text treatment by UK artist, David Shrigley. This is Shrigley's first cover with the magazine and 3rd feature in our print edition. 

“I've had a lot of really weird thoughts that should never leave my head.” This is one of the last musings David Shrigley shares over the course of three conversations taking place over multiple hours, and it's the first thing you should know about the English-born, Glasgow-trained, and now Brighton-based conceptual artist. He is eminently recognized worldwide for his craft, a deadpan humorist with an irresistible little penchant for morbidity and absurdity. At any point over the last 30 years, we could have spoken to Shrigley about his artwork, but it feels more urgent to speak with him in 2023, as an artist who has managed the social media universe, the contemporary art world, and the occasional foray into interactive art without a compromise or sudden shift of aesthetics. He is who he is.

It's not unintentional that in the Summer 2023 Quarterly, our feature on photography looks up to the stars, into the far reaches of the expanding universe, offering an even bigger expanse of questions, beyond our own existence with the James Webb Space Telescope. We feature the autobiographical, deeply-personal, and explorative works of Zanele Muholi and their own explorations of the fluidity of identity. The Perez Brothers, Danielle Roberts, Jess Valice, Kezia Harrell, or Joshua Petker, all at different moments in their careers, each ask questions about their own life experiences, inviting us to join their explorations. Art is a reflection of life, and that doesn't require a definition, but simply a closer look.

The art world at large is always seeking the next big thing, searching for an artist that other galleries haven’t exhibited or looking for a painting that no other dealer can find. The hidden treasure is often the centerpiece of the discussion when we talk about art, and it's often related to being financially beneficial to someone. But maybe there is also something spiritual we desire, something that moves us, that helps explain the world in an expansive, multi-dimensional way. One of my favorite moments is when I discover the benches and seats in a gallery or museum just made for sitting and staring for hours on end, an experience that’s even more satisfying when catching sight of someone else enthralled and enveloped by an artist’s work. 

The Spring Quarterly is full of discovery where we least expect it, from Caleb Hahne Quintana’s investigation into his family’s migration, Jesse Mockrin’s allegorical masterpieces, Hayley Barker’s secret gardens, Gregory Rick’s journey to the center of the museum world, Sadie Barnette’s exploration of language, to Tish Murtha documenting the power of a lost generation, and cover artist Fátima de Juan tackling the graffiti world as woman and warrior princess for a new century. We seek and are surprised, day in and day out, and the beauty is that in each Quarterly, you join this ongoing odyssey.

The artists in the Fall 2022 quarterly, from Kehinde Wiley to Broken Fingaz, each explain themselves as part of a larger whole in the spirit of association. “The whole point of collaboration is that you give and take from each other, and that's how you create things that are totally new,” Virgil Abloh once said, and so, we often speak about art in those terms. That is at the heart of this publication and the artists we document in each issue. Although we lost one of the greatest champions of collaboration, we continually work to honor that legacy with our antennas up. 

Juxtapoz is excited to announce our Summer 2022 Quarterly, featuring our cover story on Spanish artist ARYZ, his second cover with Juxtapoz. This Summer 2022 issue is themed around "movement" and the artists who create work both metaphorically and figuratively about movement.

The Summer 2022 quarterly is our opportunity to delve into movement as an evolving and elastic concept. Jenny Holzer, ever anti-authoritarian and the consummate representation of how and where we challenge power structures is the epitome of moving language through our institutions and public spaces. Southern California’s Jaime Muñoz creates stunning airbrush works that feature his Toyoteria concept, highlighting social and economic inequality as he depicts migrants in Toyota trucks taking themselves to work each day, providing the lifeblood of our economy. The five Jewish Ethiopian artists who immigrated to Israel describe their exodus in stunning works that now appear in major contemporary art spaces, spurring more conversation about where and how we move. Designer Natalee Decker fashions self-described “fantasy mobility devices,” in speaking of liberation in their own practice and life. Alvin Armstrong’s majestically raw athletes pay tribute to sport and body in what he calls an attempt to evoke “rhythm paintings.” While John Fekner has moved throughout NYC as a street artist with bold aesthetics and streetwise poetry, ARYZ has reimagined the ancient ground of European churches, transforming them into a ballet of vividly colorful, contemporary energy. 

Perhaps that is the perfect way to think about movement in 2022, as an attempt and aspiration. Movement can be hope, empowerment, understanding, struggling, a search for freedom and an escape. And often, it's a desire and the implementation of change. This issue is our chance to look at how circumstances force us to examine ourselves and create ways to communicate, converse and take action. Here is where to begin.

Our Spring Quarterly hums more quietly, and yet at the same time, it pulsates with such humanity. There’s introspection, an observational theme from each artist, but a release too. I feel it should be noted that, as we completed this issue, the Whitney Biennial announced their 2022 theme, Quiet As It’s Kept, as if there is a feeling in the air, that after all this time of separation, we need to explore the quiet together, collectively. It was definitely on my mind these past few months. And so we start this issue with a quote from the great portrait painter, Alice Neel, who is honored this spring with an exhibition at the de Young museum in San Francisco in a show called People Come First. She observed her subjects with a sense of sensitivity and passion. Her subjects held a powerful pose, an elegant grit, something real and yet hushed. In a memorable interview when Neel appeared with Tonight Show host Johnny Carson in 1978, she remarked, “Well, so many of us are damaged, aren’t we?” Such often unspoken honesty, that brutal quiet truth, resonates in 2022 as much as it did over 40 years ago, positioning Neel as the perfect artist to study and honor.

Juxtapoz is pleased to announce our Winter 2022 Quarterly, featuring Radiohead's Thom Yorke and Stanley Donwood on the cover. 

At the top of a short wish list of bands who might reissue a box set, of all the albums to do it with, I would say that Radiohead’s Kid A and Amnesiac are at the top. Let me explain: I’m of a certain age, was actually a freshman in college, when Radiohead played “The National Anthem” on SNL in the fall of 2000. I felt the shock wave of innovation and art that I didn’t imagine possible on mainstream television. It hit like a bolt of lightning, something very different and apparently, very new century. Looking back 21 years later, and surveying the landscape of Billboard music, that Kid A made its debut at #1 in the album charts seems unfathomable. An artistic statement from such a popular band doesn’t slam into public consciousness like it used to, and perhaps it might not again. That said, what a testimony it is that difficult and challenging creative outputs did occupy a potent place in our wider pop culture.

This issue thrives on rule-breaking. Salman Toor, Afrofuturism pioneers, Tania Franco Klein and the other featured artists speak about breaking from tradition, and the result is something graceful, experimental, urgent and sublime. Kid A was perhaps the first great work of art of the new millennium, something aficionados of any genre return to as an example of rebirth and reimagination in collaboration. The band has begun to unpack the work of that time, in their own voice, inspiring confidence to widen our own potential. Sometimes taking a chance is the best practice of all. 

The Fall 2021 Quarterly issue weaves a thread of listening, as many of the featured artists speak of place as an in-between time. That many of them came from the middle of the United States, central Europe or central Africa even, seems to capture a mood of looking out—bringing traditions and influences from all around and transforming them into something completely fresh. We often ask about their listening habits, meaning music or podcasts. But do we mean “what do you hear” from the world around you? What are we listening to in terms of how people feel, especially within the collective identity of the time? Our cover image sets the tone: a faceless woman, between two massive buildings, brimming with expression and  strength, defying an urban echo chamber, overseeing the world beneath. The first time I saw this painting by Julie Curtiss, I was struck by an ominous force upon this all-seeing, all-knowing figure, as if on a pulpit, assessing the crowd. There was a wonderful line in her interview where she seems to speak directly about this work. “I want people to still have room to project some of their lead experiences or some of their inner world into my work,” she said, “and I want to provide enough ambiguity that portrays how ideas are often complementary. I’m more interested in paradox, and in how things can reverse in one second.” The cover begs even further questions: are we ready for what is to come?

I doubt I’m the only one who has ever daydreamed their life into some sort of movie scene just before the ending credits are run. I think it’s natural for  “a dreamer,” a category in which I most certainly belong, to imagine oneself in a story of importance, or at least of narrative significance.  I think of this in being so drawn to the cinematic romanticism in Danielle McKinney’s paintings. As a viewer, you are able to recognize yourself in her scenes. A record player is subtly heard in the distance, cigarette smoke lingering over you, nothing too loud in this solitary tableau. These paintings slowly stroll through the frame, ever so quietly. That she called her recent solo show Saw My Shadow, is a nod to both existence and individuality, as well as the overwhelming sense that the female characters share the same sounds, drifting into the dream with the viewer. A book critic rightly assessed that Hemingway "impersonated simplicity," and that, too, perfectly reflects McKinney. Fulsome with details and profound color use, these works also impersonate simplicity, revealing universal moments of respite, veins of religion and the expression of what it is we see in ourselves—importantly, our ideal selves. 

This is a painterly issue and, as it turns out, quite cinematic. This is a new year, and in so many ways, it feels like a fresh start. We didn’t really get a 2020, at least in the ways we thought we would. It got us thinking about the ones we lean on, those we look to for inspiration, and that is why our Spring 2021 cover by Yusuke Hanai offers reason for hope and support. It is so clear; friends supporting each other in times of trouble. Such directness guides us in leaving the last year (or four) behind. Yusuke is a rare, humble talent who can convey truth for a collective consciousness. This Spring, our quarterly focuses on forthright honesty and a sense of possibility, from Yusuke to Chris Martin, Tiffany Alfonseca to Ryan Travis Christian.

With her interactive and immersive life-sized installations, all made of felt, Sparrow has not only captivated audiences with the sheer mass and detail of what she produces for her exhibitions, but she has also created the "wow" factor and question of "what is this? What is it telling me? What is art? What is commerce?" The Fall season always means the gallery world is getting back into full swing, with major highlighted shows opening in September and October. We are excited to announce our Fall 2018 issue with a cover story on Brooklyn-based, Vermont-born painter, Grace Weaver, as she opens a major solo show, BEST LIFE, at James Cohan in NYC. We sat down with Weaver at her Brooklyn studio over the course of a few sessions leading up to the show, learning about her process and ability to tell complex daily life stories within her large-format paintings. It was our chance to see the progress of what we think is going to be an illustrious and exciting career for an emerging artist.
