Photography allows us be anyone we want to be and to share that vision of ourselves in the most believable way. A professional,
buttoned-down photo on LinkedIn. A picture that says “I’m cute and fun!” on a dating website. A wholesome photo playing with
a puppy sent to our grandparents. A pouty selfie in a steamed up mirror to someone we are hoping to entice. Are you feeling dark?

For the past year and a half, I have been managing
myself as an independent model. The experience
has been many things, but mostly it has been one of
learning, largely by trial and error. I tried the agency
approach and attended every casting call fro m Seattle
to Portland, only to be turned down repeatedly for
arbitrary reasons like being 1⁄2 inch too short for their
height requirements. While legitimate agencies often
turned me away at the door, the scams got my hopes
up, before asked me to pay thousands for a portfolio.
But I never gave up. Had I quit after each rejection, I
would never have had the opportunity to model and
write monthly articles for FUSE magazine.
