Life for many of you might have been affected by the COVID-19 epidemic. You might be bored with staying home or your diving trips have been postponed or cancelled, but let's just take a moment to be grateful about being healthy and remember there is always more time in the future.

In this issue, we bring you three different aspects for three astonishing diving destinations: incredible marine biodiversity in Banda Sea; whale watching in Tonga and ice diving in Austria. Although you will not be able to set foot on those spots soon, I always believe that patience will pay it off in the end. While waiting, spend some time to work on your photography skills – Alex Tyrrell has returned to EZDIVE to give you some tips about underwater super macro photography and Su Huai tells the story of his experience volunteering with Sea Turtles at Yakushima. And if you get tired of reading, just relax and appreciate the underwater beauty through Seung Chul Yang’s lens.

And last, I pray for this planet to get back on track, and that everyone will stay home, stay safe, and keep reading.

Have you ever watched the documentary film My Octopus Teacher? In this issue of EZDIVE, we follow Kate around the kelp forests of Cape Town in South Africa, where this amazing underwater spectacle is located. Further east, on Lady Musgrave Island in the southern Great Barrier Reef, you’ll have the chance to witness the hatching of sea turtles just like Katie did. Next, Henley delivers a great ‘underwater action movie.’ You’ll see what I mean when you see his photos of gannets on Shetland, to the north of Scotland.

Cephalopods are mysterious and dreamy with their faint blue glow. It is often said that blackwater photography is like stars shining in the darkness of night, so our contributor Alex shares his tips on blackwater photography without holding back. Finally, if you’re learning freediving, you may be struggling with equalization. Harry offers some advice on how, with practice, you can overcome this common problem for new divers.

As the final issue for year 2021, let’s refresh your brain with some amazing
underwater images. EZDIVE has been proud of its photo selection quality. Let’s start with the cover photo taken in Hong Kong Sea by a simple digital camera (TG6), and it’s just really RED in my opinion of view, it’s very Christmas. Then we dig deep into the life of our cover photographer Vania Kam, one of the most awarded international photographers, and found out how she started all and what she is going to do next. Lin Qing, another renowned and highly-respected photographer, again shares his photography tips about the use of light.
Of course, we have provided few diving destination ideas for you including
Brittany, an often overlooked dive spot in France; Madeira, to satisfy you with both macro and wide-angle marine life; and Bali, needing no expanation since it’s the most visited place for Asian divers. Also in this issue, Matt Yang returns to the starting point and explains what freediving truly is to our readers and Simon Lorenz shows us some photos of whale sharks with parasites. Lastly, rising start photographer Music Lin from Taiwan shares some of her favourite works with EZDIVE readers.
Let’s get some visual satisfaction before we plan our trips for 2022.

Many of us are lucky enough to have had our two jabs (Covid-19 vaccines) now, and we are all ready to hit the road once the travel bans are lifted. But where we should go? Are those we have yearned for dive sites opened yet? Well, allow our EZDIVE contributors to give you some ideas before 2022. First, Henley is taking us to Kandooma Thila, one of the premier dive sites in Maldives, location of the world’s largest population of reef mantas. Then, local professional photographer Alex endorses Richelieu Rock, Thailand as a place that satisfies both macro and wide-angle photographers. And last, La Palma in the Canary Islands is also making its debut in EZDIVE, and Timo reports on the exciting dives and varied marine life. Also in this issue, Ipah Uid Lynn exhibits her nudibranch photos collection to EZDIVE readers while Shane explains why seagrasses are a major key in fighting against climate change. Steve shares his wreck photography tips, and most importantly, in my point of view, Beth tells us how to get prepared before a dive trip, as safety is always the prerequisite to ensure we get to keep diving.

It’s not likely you will think of the UK when you are considering a diving destination, but Henley is going to show us how much British water have – including nearly half of the world’s grey seals. Next, let’s go for an underwater archaeological tour of the Greek island of Alonnisos in the Aegean Sea with Timo Dersch; the marine life there is also diverse. And last, Grant is leading us to Milford Sound in New Zealand, a region perfect for any photographer no matter whether above or below water. Apart from the fjord itself, the scenery is quite spectacular.

In this issue of the magazine, you will get a peek at Palau’s tropical vistas, the rich biodiversity off the north east coast of Taiwan and a haven for underwater photographers – Moorea in the South Pacific. I am pretty sure this is the debut for Moorea in EZDIVE and I hope you will put it on your bucket list. As coral bleaching is getting worse every year around Taiwan, Taiwan Environmental Information Association (TEIA) started a marine conservation act for all – check it out and sign up if you are also an enthusiastic conservationist. Again, freediving guru Matt Yang shares his experiences about Frenzel equalization along with a reminder from our columnist Simon Pridmore about the importance of oxygen when diving. In addition, get well-prepared by reading the column ‘Diving Safety’ if you are intending to try current diving in the future. Finally, we complete this issue with Zola Chen’s artistic cetacean photos in black and white, and open the second half of this year with faith and hope for the future.

In this issue, Ali Postma is taking us to Lanzarote, with its combination of
a desert-like island and azure blue water, where you can visit not only the
famous Museo Atlantico, but also the fish and the vibrant reefs. Meanwhile,
Beth and Shaun Tierney talk about the use of sculptures under the water
worldwide – including Lanzarote – and how those artificial reefs are helpful to the environment. Vanessa Mignon brings Christmas Island back in the spotlight again with its rich biodiversity and endemic species.

As a multitasker and multitalented diver, Timo Dersch shares his tips on
freediving photography and Alex Tyrrell shares his tips for shooting octopus.
These pro’s won’t make you a photography master in the blink of eye but you
will definitely be enlightened by their works. So what are you waiting for? Let
the reading begin.

In this last issue for 2020, we would like to catch our readers’ eyes by using a shocking coral bleaching image as our cover. Of course, we have now realised the problem but what’s the solution? We invited Sally from LAMEVE (Large Marine Vertebrates Research Institute, Philippines) to talk about eco-credibility when traveling, and hope this feature will enlighten you with a few proposals.
 
Some of our familiar contributors have again delivered some stunning images and exciting stories from diving spots worldwide. I was especially impressed by St. Helena, its isolated loneliness and the extraordinary landscape. However, if you are a big fan of Rhinopias, you will enjoy Alex’s rhino hunting piece while other readers might think Triton Bay is more his or her cup of tea for being so fishy and colourful. Lastly, Timo highlights and describes three equalisation techniques that are well-known among freedivers – Valsalva, Frenzel and Mouthfill.

This issue happens to be the show directory for DRT SHOW Malaysia 2020, we exclusively invited Azua Shafii to share some tips about freediving competitions as well as asking the Tropical Research And Conservation Centre (TRACC) for the latest on marine conservation in Malaysia Borneo. Everyone evolves, we all do. EZDIVE decided to start making changes from this issue - we are honoured to announce EZDIVE is going to be more diverse: monofin techniques for freedivers; tips on winning underwater photo competitions; and how reef revival works in the Western Pacific. Also, let us 'paper-travel' together to Sea of Cortez in Mexico, Tubbataha in Philippines and Fiji. And we can all sit down to read about jellyfish, a life form that we just can’t quite decide to love or hate.

In this issue, check out Timo Dersch’s trip to Dahab, a small desert town on the Sinai Peninsula where colourful coral reefs somehow perfectly merges with the warm Arabic culture; the old friend Tim Rock unveiled the ‘best kept secret’ to our readers – the Pohnpei in Micronesia, which is an amazing spot full of friendly people, outstanding diving and unparalleled natural beauty; or if you are more into something ‘dynamic’, then the action film ‘Marlin Hunt’ directed by Henley Spiers in Mexico will do.

For divers in Northern Hemisphere, August must be a popular diving season – where have you been or where do you plan to go? Maybe you will get some new ideas from us. If you cannot decide whether big or small marine animals are your favourite, Mactan in Philippines can satisfy all your cravings, plus it is easy to get to. If you are into something strongly connected to local culture or pristine oceanic scenery, Alor in Indonesia and Milne Bay in PNG might be a good choice to explore next. In this issue,  Philippine marine biodiversity and Philippine pretty underwater images, too. Finally, let us learn a new photography skill – Bokeh, and we can all apply this skill on our next dive trip.

Unlike most of the destinations we usually hear about or see posted on social media, in this issue — thanks to our adventurous and talented contributors — we are crossing three continents to explore some lesser-known dive spots such as Mohéli, Arica; Poor Knights Islands in New Zealand; Cabo Pulmo, Mexico; and Green Island in Taiwan. If you are into The TV drama “Game of Thrones”, and think the dragons are cool, then you will be interested in our story about Weedy Seadragons. And UW photographer - Alex Tyrrell - has supplied some black water shooting tips. Also, let us learn about Cuban crocodiles, which are listed as Critically Endangered by the IUCN, due to climate change. So have you started to use less plastic yet?

In issue 77, we are going to have a much closer look at these other gentle giants in Cenderwasih Bay thanks to Steve Jones’ detailed report on the whale sharks and their relationship to local fisherman. The quest for megafauna seems never ending. Besides whales, sharks are always a top attraction for divers. Follow Blue Force Fleet on their expedition in the Sudanese Red Sea and you may be overwhelmed by the ubiquitous sharks. With luck you may see hammerhead sharks and even the thresher shark! What I also find intriguing there are the remains of the underwater laboratory built by Jacques-Yves Cousteau in 1963. Visiting any wreck, artificial or not, makes you gape at the power of time. From taking photos of the big to taking ‘bigger’ pictures, we invite you to look down on some of the most famous diving destinations from a drone’s perspective. Nick Song, a commercial photographer from mainland China, has a lot to tell us about drone photography.

In issue #76, we will lead you to discover diving in the frozen north of Iceland - Silfra Crack, the only place on the earth where you can dive between tectonic plates; Timor-Leste as a major global cetacean biodiversity hotspot that attracts 24 different species of whales and dolphins; the warmer waters of Kona in Hawaii, you can have both thrilling encounters with large animals and dreamlike opportunities with rarely seen creatures on a black water dives, which actually first began in the late 1970’s in Kona. Icy territories or warm waters, there’re always so much new ground for you to explore. Hopefully, this new issue of EZDIVE can give you some inspiration.

Take it slow. Modern developments nowadays has widen our range and vision underwater, however, an extreme opposite e to this is muck diving, where divers or photographers prefer to take it slow and enjoy each dive at their own pace. In this issue we will lead you to Tufi in PNG; Ishigaki Island at the west of Okinawa in Japan; Black Rock at the far western edge of the Mergui Archipelago in Myanmar; Turks and Caicos, fluorescent corals, mysterious seashells, magnificent jetties… so much to see and to explore in this issue! Take it slow, one destination at a time.

Thanks to underwater photographers and videographers, we are able to witness the beauty of such places without taking all that risk and challenge. In this issue, EZDIVE will lead you to Nereo Cave – one of the biggest cave complexes in the Mediterranean; to the secret fresh water cave in Honduras; and to an off-the-beaten-path destination, Oman - one of the most ancient countries in the Arabian Peninsula which is becoming the Middle East’s modern diving frontier.
