The February, 2020 issue of Compass Magazine.

This month's cover story is on the new "lungs of the city", the massive new Central Park built on the site of the old Shuinan Airport, written by Chloe Chang.  As always, we kick off with a roundup of events, and then on to the new openings!  Compass magazine editor Doug Habecker brings us Chilliesine Indian Bistro, a new take on the Chillies Indian Restaurant model. Rachel An, as always a busy bee, brings us a slew of new openings, starting with Wanderlust Bean Project, opened by a Polish/HK couple serving Polish food.  She also brings us the nostalgically decored Yonshin Taiwanese Tea & Cake Selection Bar and the upscale 77's Bistro & Bar.  Compass Chinese editor Uvia Chang gives us the lowdown on Malaysian PappaRich, Chloe Chang braves the spicy Szichuan hotpot eatery Happy Fish and Pepper, Taylor Melton samples the delicate pastries of B Square Bakery and Anna Yang has fun a cool, artsy new bar Arts & Crafts.  Doug is back with our Western dining feature soaking in the spectacular views and food at Top of ONE, Uvia checks out the classic Japanese decor and yummy food at Abura Yakiniku while Niang Chen gets Australian with Manly's Club Bistro.  Want a custom design on your hat, bag or T...ask Ann Li.  She checks out custom printers kuroi-T.   Old school RPGs are just the thing to unwind and fire up the imaginations, and Daniel White explores a place that caters to just that: Titan Roundtable.  Taichung City This Month explores what the city is doing to improve the city's air quality. 

In this issue Rachel An takes a look at the National Taichung Theater, a major landmark in the city!  As always we have plenty of newly opened establishments, including Ta Ta Earth and VVG Foodplay and Bar (by Rachel An), Thai J Hotpot and Yan Guo Hotpot (By Uvia Chang), Ming Yue (by Keiran Cheng), HWC Roasters (by Douglas Habecker), Ururu Coffee (by Evangeline Lin) and the Taiwan Modern Musical Boxes Museum (by Anna Yang).  Uvia Chang travelled to Changhua to check out scenic restaurant Flower Baylor, while Niang Chen got her Japanese food fix at Yuge Sushi, which started life at a night market but now is a full restaurant.  Douglas Habecker also went the seafood route, but Taiwanese style at Ali Seafood.  Rachel An went exotic and checked out Thai Hua, which was opened by a Thai-Burmese-Chinese immigrant family.  If beer's your thing, Douglas Habecker finds out why Le Ble d'or has been so successful for so long!  For a totally different experience, check out the Tanzi Tourist Orchid Garden, explored by Rachel An.  There is also info on the Taichung Bike Festival and the Jazz Festival.  

It's amazing but true: Compass Food & Music Festival turns 16 this year!  Editor Douglas Habecker takes a look at our long-running festival in this month's cover story.  As always we've got lots of new openings, and our Chinese editor Uvia Chang kicks off with a look at Tsai Huo Roast Duck, which does roast duck in a variety of popular styles.  For seafood and hotpot, check out Jeffery Hsu's look at Yu Zhi Xiang Mu Tong Yu (Fish in a Barrel).  For a spot with a nostalgic feel, swing by Home Home, written up by Charlie Huang.  Pasta and brunch are on the menu at Mu Cement Cafe, which Betty Huang introduces us to.  Eric Hsieh looked into Mr. Good, which mixes pickled vegetables on sale with Shanxi dining.  For western foods like burgers in a forest decor, you can't miss out on Go Home, written up by Evangeline Lin.  Doug Habecker checks out the aptly-named Spirited American Bakery and Niang Chen found a great spot for whisky lovers in Duei Mien.  For longer-standing restaurants, Doug Habecker visited high quality for good price Inn Cafe and sampled WOO's Thai cuisine.  Uvia had a good time exploring Fu Chai Cantonese Restaurant and La Saison Patisserie Formosa.  For nightlife, we look to Daniel White, and he delivered a look into Coffury Studio No.71.  In our Taichung City Government section, the Information Bureau looks at the city's efforts towards creating a friendly city for senior citizens.  In our new section in cooperation with the Taichung Brother's Baseball club we get insight into the key role of the team's interpreter.  Finally, for a bit of fun and games, Daniel White is back, introducing us to Game Farm up in the Tunghai area.  

This month Compass goes baseball crazy for the home team, the Taichung Brothers Baseball Club, in our cover story written by editor Doug Habecker!  Newly opened places we check out this month include Manly's Club Bistro and Yummy Goose both covered by Niang Chen, Rachel An checks out Master Spicy Noodle, Sur Cuisine, Abura Japanese and Plate 2.0.  Other new openings include Fain Feast by Chinese editor Uvia Chang and Tong Wun Tseng by Kieran Cheng.  Our full dining features include Daily 112 by Anna Yang, Wow Cool by Chloe Chang, Tianliao Farmhouse by Uvia Chang and Gotcha by Rachel An.  Boske Bakery Cafe is our tea/coffee feature of the month.  In TCTM the city government introduces family outing venues.  And for a fun diversions activity, Taylor Melton brings us CP Queenstown.  Of course we also have all the usual what's on activities, listings and much more!  

Taiwan's sweltering summers may be difficult to endure, but they also make a trip to the water park a pure joy!  Join us as Taylor Melton takes us on a tour of the best water parks in Central Taiwan!  This month we are excited to announce a new section for local baseball fans, the Taichung Brothers Baseball Update--which keeps you in the know on the best team in Taiwan baseball.  Achieving legendary status doesn't come easy, but Finga's Fine Foods has that in spades, as Daniel White explores.  Niang Chen explores hot pot delights at Guo Lao Er, Jason Chen checks out both Couch Potato Brunch and Cafe Shih and the Ark, and Chinese editor Uvia Chang tries out Kung Chi Ho vegetarian buffet.  Editor-in-Chief Douglas Habecker doesn't leave out Left Bar & Cafe.  If you are in the market for your own custom T-shirt, Uvia Chang introduces Kuroi-T Design.  Taichung City This Month brings the family fun in their special section.  Although sadly she has returned to her native Bolivia, Madeleyne Aguilar Andrade made sure to check out the very unique Nantou Cat Bank before she left. Whenever Taichung elects a new mayor, we are there to find out what the future holds, and Vice Mayor Bruce Linghu gives us a preview in this month's cover story!  In this issue Helen Young checks out Marbledot Cafe and V Di JA, Uvia Chang visits Fu Gui and Taylor Melton gives us the lowdown on AileRoy Kitchen.  Editor Douglas Habecker goes sweet with Toumou Egg Puffs and Uvia is back exploring nightlife in Fengyuan at 3 Giants.  For shopping, try out Mojie's BakingLand, introduced by Chloe Chang. Though vegetarian options have been a part of Taiwan's culture for centuries, it is only recently that vegan options have begun making inroads.  This issue provides some basic options to get you started on that road, both in terms of food and general lifestyle.  Of course as always we've got lots of articles on the hottest new openings in town and the latest on what's going on this May.  In our dining section this month Editor-in-Chief Doug Habecker checks out Chillies Indian in person, Daniel White gives us the lowdown on Jerry's House and Adam Bruce does a special 2-page Finer Things on the Wines of Fruili Venezia Giulia.  Doug also checks in at Place in our nightlife feature and Jason Chen visits vintage shop Tsubasa. Y.  The Taichung City Information Bureau's Taichung City This Month section is back with fresh content and the latest from the new administration of Mayor Lu Shiow-yen, this month giving an in-depth look at her vision of" Developing a strong, wonderful Taichung".  Of course, there is also much, much more including some exhibitions from the Culture Bureau and Chloe Chang's fun find Coffee Literature on Dadu Mountain.  

Chloe Chang takes us on a tour of shops selling handmade jewelry, Taylor Melton explores MeetU Pasta, and Niang Chen brings us the scoop on Orient Dragon and Chuan Tao Ji Grilling Restaurant.  Ann Li checks in at Wu Chun fruit ice and of course our regular roundup of the hottest new openings, arts & culture happenings, nightlife fun and community activities...and so much more!

Did you know the Houli District is not only one of the homes of the Flora Expo, it's also a world renowned center of the saxophone industry and also famous for horse riding?  Compass writer Judy Tan Lee Choo takes you on a tour of this often overlooked Taichung district.  Some dining highlights of this issue include Editor Douglas Habecker's look at the unique stylings of Zebra, Chloe Chang checks out to see if there are any limits at No Limit, Michael Turton gives us the skinny on Provender Warehouse and Niang Chen delivers the beef on Beef King.  Taylor Melton goes out on the town to check out nightlife spot Hulk's Seafood BBQ Bar and Chinese Editor Uvia Chang checks in at Keep Shining for this month's Tea/Coffee feature.
