Kicking off on April 6, the annual Singapore Maritime Week (SMW) saw nine exciting days of industry events, networking receptions and public outreach activities attended by more than 50,000 participants from over 30 countries. The feature article shares highlights from during SMW, including the 13th Singapore Maritime Lecture with Minister for Trade and Industry Mr Chan Chun Sing giving the keynote address, SMW Opening Ceremony and Exhibition, International Maritime Awards & Reception, Sea Asia, and the Singapore Maritime Technology Conference. The issue also includes profiles of Dr Sadan Kaptanoğlu, Managing Director at HI Kaptanoğlu Shipping; Mr Lars Lange, Secretary General at International Union of Marine Insurance; and Ms Shanna Ghose, a partner at Hill Dickinson LLP. Pacific Carriers Limited shares how they embrace new disruptive technologies to build an agile workforce, while DNV GL explains how their continued investment in research and collaborative innovation helps companies advance the safety and sustainability aspects of their operations.

Singapore commemorates its bicentennial in 2019, and this issue focuses on the nation’s maritime journey from the past to the present, with an eye to the future. The feature story highlights Singapore’s development from a trading post in the 14th century to a global maritime hub, as well as efforts by the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore to help Singapore remain a leading and vital node in the global maritime network. In keeping with the theme, the Commentary section saw David Chin, former Executive Director of the Singapore Maritime Foundation sharing three areas of the maritime industry that have seen significant improvements through the years. The issue also included COSCO SHIPPING (South East Asia)’s President Gu Jingsong expounding on the factors that make Singapore an attractive regional headquarters as well as Shipowners’ Club’s Singapore branch Chief Executive David Heaselden imparting his thoughts on the club’s role in providing protection and indemnity for its members.

This issue of Singapore Nautilus takes a look at how the shipping industry is prepared for growth despite world-wide challenges. The feature story rounds up the highlights of Singapore Maritime Week (SMW) — the 2018 edition of the region’s premier maritime convention saw 34 events spread across nine impactful days. We attended one key event of SMW 2018, the Maritime Cyber Security Seminar, and share the panellists’ views in a Q&A format in the Community Talk section. Company Spotlight falls on the Wilhelmsen Group, a global player in the maritime industry. Its Chief Digital Officer shares how it is embracing digital technologies to resolve big issues. In the Personality section, Ocean Network Express CEO Mr Jeremy Nixon reveals why Singapore was chosen as its HQ; and Vice Admiral Guillermo Luttges, Director General of the General Directorate of Maritime Territory and Merchant Marine, Chile, shares areas in which the port authorities of Chile and Singapore can work on together.

This issue of Singapore Nautilus examines how digitalisation is transforming the maritime industry. The feature story highlights how Singapore is sustaining its competitive advantage in the maritime industry by developing capabilities in emerging technologies such as autonomous systems, robotics and artificial intelligence. 

In line with the theme, most of this issue's articles highlight areas and trends relevant to digital technology in the maritime industry. The spotlight was shone on INTTRA's Asia Technology Summit, where topics such as blockchain technology and the Internet of Things were discussed. This issue also explores the Singapore-based e-marketplace MOSCORD, which simplifies the procurement process for the maritime sector. 

As maritime companies face an uncertain global climate with protectionist trends in trade, Soren Skou, CEO of Maersk, explains how seamless, digital end-to-end solutions can lower the barriers to trade. And Masafumi Kuroki, Executive Director of the Regional Cooperation Agreement on Combating Piracy and Armed Robbery against Ships in Asia (ReCAAP) Information Sharing Centre (ISC) emphasises the need for multilateral sharing of information to combat piracy and sea robbery. 

This issue of Singapore Nautilus features the International Maritime Centre (IMC) 2030 Advisory Committee's vision for Maritime Singapore's next phase of growth, and its strategies for bringing this vision into reality. It also discusses why development in the sector needs to occur in a sustainable manner in order for the broader community to benefit from this plan in the long term. 

In line with the theme, most of this issue's articles highlight areas and trends relevant to Singapore's maritime trajectory. Topics like safety at sea, cooperation among stakeholders, autonomous crafts, LNG bunkering, and digital analytics are discussed to varying levels of detail. We have also taken the time to obtain insights and projections from well-known industry veterans in relevant sectors. 

In line with efforts to mitigate climate change, we also have a representative from the International Maritime Organization sharing insights about increased global scrutiny and sustainability in future-ready shipping.

This issue’s main feature highlights key events taking place during the 12th edition of Singapore Maritime Week (SMW), which is held in Singapore in April. Themed “Navigating Through Challenging Times”, SMW 2017 rallies the maritime industry to harness opportunities for the future, despite current difficulties, through the adoption of digital solutions and cutting-edge technology. 

This issue also spotlights several maritime establishments in Singapore that have embraced the digital transformation in their respective fields. The Port & Starboard section features Jurong Port Academy, which was launched by Jurong Port earlier this year, to ensure port workers are well equipped to meet current and future demands on their skill sets. The Maritime Services and Technology sections feature data analytics start-up Sense Infosys and underwater hull cleaning service provider C-Leanship respectively. These two entities show the advantages of investing in technology and innovation to stay ahead of the game.

This issue of SIngapore Nautilus spotlights key developments within the bunkering industry. As the world's top bunkering port, Singapore has always taken the lead in improving standards within the industry. Since Jan 1, 2017, we became the first port to make the use of mass flow metering (MFM) systems mandatory for the delivery of marine fuel oil. Find out more in the main feature.
