Christmas is approaching and this issue focuses on hope. Themed It's the Season of Hope, we hope you enjoy some of the hope-filled stories from our colleagues. (pg 28). We were the first private hospital, in partnership with Community Chest to raise awareness and rally support for the Rare Disease Fund (pg 22). Osteoporosis is a bone condition characterised by low bone mass or decreased bone strength, and we discover how the roles of hormones in osteoporosis along with current and emerging new methods of treatment. (pg 56). Finally, in Dementia vs Alzheimer’s Disease (pg 68), we discover the differences between these two common age-related conditions. Happy reading!

In this issue of MyAlvernia, we will look at big families. We interviewed five families and were charmed by their stories of close-knit family life, disarmed by their honesty about its challenges, and touched by their hopes and dreams for the future (pg 12). Diabetes is a systemic disease that affects multiple organs in the body, hence a multi-disciplinary approach is required to deliver holistic care to patients. We learn more from four specialists about their roles in caring for patients with diabetes (pg 20). Finally, the smaller bodies of infants and children are physiologically different from those of adults. Hence treating children often requires a different approach to treating adults. We highlight some of the areas where paediatric healthcare differs significantly from adult healthcare (pg 34).

We are pleased to present My Alvernia #37 as we celebrate 58 years of serving all with love. We interviewed two Sisters and learned that the FMDM Sisters have in fact been serving Singaporeans for some 70 years and counting, more than a decade before the hospital opened. While a lot has changed, the practice of helping the community, among other things, has endured (pg 12). Colorectal cancer is the most common type of cancer in Singapore and it is on the rise. We learn more about its link with diabetes and how it can be treated. (pg 18). Finally, vaccinations are a scientifically proven form of preventive medicine against a wide range of infections. We look at the importance of vaccinations for the elderly (pg 36).

We are pleased to present an early issue of My Alvernia #35 to coincide with Nurses’ Day. To commemorate the special day on 1 Aug, we focus on the diverse nursing staff on top of the usual healthcare articles. We will also profile the special people behind the care. (page 14). Obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA) is a sleeping disorder common for people with  type 2 diabetes. Learn more about its link with diabetes and how it can be treated. (page 28).  Pregnancy is no doubt an exciting and rewarding journey, but you may also worry about how much food to consume while carrying your growing baby. We bring you Part 1 of a 2-parter article on how to eat healthily during your pregnancy (page 30). Finally, studies shown that women are more likely to start and continue breastfeeding if they receive positive encouragement from their family and friends. We look at some breast milk storage tips for when you go back to work, and an action plan to help you (page 34).

In this issue, we are making time for families - big ones! Though the latest national statistics show that families in Singapore are shrinking, some families are bucking the trend. We turn the spotlight on some amazing parents who have delivered at least one child at our hospital as they espouse the kinship and support of a large family. They are living proof that having a big family is still possible in this day and age (pg 17). We get to the bottom of constipation by looking at the symptoms, causes and concerns, and how changes in lifestyle and diets can help to relief the problem (24). Childhood obesity is a weighty problem that can take an emotional and physical toll on our kids. There are things you can do to spare them the suffering (pg 31). Finally, depression is the most common psychiatric condition among the elderly, affecting between 3 and 6 percent of our aged population in Singapore. We look at what can be done to help recognise, prevent and manage this disabling condition (pg 38). Happy reading!

We are turning 57 this March (pg 18) and are pleased to present a revamped version of My Alvernia!  In the cover story, we look at Photos as Therapy and uncover some of their therapeutic uses and benefits (pg 14). The month of March is designated Colorectal Cancer Awareness month by the National Cancer Centre. Colorectal cancer is the most common cancer in Singapore and our risk of getting it increases with age. Our campus specialist prescribes a common sense approach to prevention and treatment (pg 28). We also examine the toll cancer takes on your mind and emotions in Feelings & Cancer (pg 28). Finally, we look at My Baby Bites When Breastfeeding (pg 34). We kick off this issue with a focus on heart disease in line with the upcoming World Heart Day, Our on-campus cardiologist shares with us a new Computed Tomography (CT) scan technique called CT Myocardial Perfusion which allows for a more detailed diagnosis of heart diseases with less stress on patients (pg 40). This issue we present a seamless model of care that leverages on technology to ensure continuity of nursing and clinical care to the patients when they leave the hospital for home. This model was recently launched at the recent National Seminar on Productivity in Healthcare in October this year, in partnership with Tetsuyu Homecare (pg 36).
