When the June/July ’21 theme of “Summer Sonic” was conceived at the end of last year, the Men’s Folio team was optimistic about returning to “normalcy” — in anticipation of music festivals during the Summer seasons. Alas, the discovery of COVID-19 variants has changed the course of recovery, leaving many frustrated on account of the individual and the nation.

In the age of prioritising oneself over others, which has briefly acted against various social movements to become “what society wants me to be first”, issues in communication and understanding coupled with the lack of empathetic listening persist.

In this Summer Sonic issue, Men’s Folio amplifies the value of communication. Contributor Fariza Salleh started her podcast Frankly, My Dear because she believes in the need to listen and empathise with differing views in the betterment of oneself (page 36).

The route to better understanding and shared communication includes having an inner monologue with oneself. Local musician, Fauxe (page 38) puts it best — “Big on empathy. Big on knowledge. Big on love. Big on every single aspect of life that isn’t about music… That no matter what you do, you are all going to expire eventually. So don’t dream about it, try small and live it — and then watch it become a big reality.”

Empathy also drives the second annual edition of Men’s Folio Grooming Awards (page 92), where a brand new make-up category has found its way. Approaching beauty democratically is especially pertinent here as deputy editor, Bryan Goh took a large stride forward to involve industry veterans — considering their different grooming preferences and needs. The winners were selected based on each product’s ability to meet a huge set of demands and expectations — one can be assured that coming to a consensus was no easy feat but thanks to their unbridled passions, the panel kept going.

Once again, the Men’s Folio team ambitions to light the torch of abundance in all our readers — this summer and always.
