In this issue

The recurring theme for the annual Heroes issue has always centred on the idea of community and this August ’20 issue is no exception. If one has not realised it yet, the yearly August heroes issues is the only time in a year when readers will see a group of cover stars. Leading the third edition of the Heroes issue are Alan Wan, James Kumar, Richie Koh and Vinny Sharp, who engage us in a conversation on the importance of the arts in Singapore on page 42. Associate watch and features editor, Asaph Low’s interviews with them showed that there is no doubt in that for a society to grow, the diversity of alternative voices should be allowed for different ideologies to flourish — and not only through the tried-and-tested route. The spirit of community cannot be more poignantly put across by contributor, Moji Neshat on page 41. He puts across the South African philosophy of “Ubuntu”, which loosely translates to “I am because we are” and Neshat defines his own humanity through the interactions he had with other people. The moving narrative defines the idea of Men’s Folio — to put Asian talents and most importantly, our own Singaporeans at the forefront of our content, so that we can continue to stand behind our own talents while giving them a platform to express themselves. On page 56, we unveil the top 10 finalists of the annual Men’s Folio Model of the Year. Digital editor, Bryan Goh’s interview with Serene Satya Charan on page 108 about how to reconcile with our past, present and future through natal chart readings, rightly puts us in our place — “if we want to move forward into the future, we need to recognise and process the past”. Our work is not done and there is still much more to achieve. Fashion stylist and writer, Manfred Lu explores the lack of Singapore fashion archiving on page 110. The question begets if we have enough Singapore fashion to even archive in the last five decades since our independence?
