The summer holiday is a relatively foreign concept in perpetually sunny Singapore, where the mid-year period is more affectionately known as the “June holidays”. Many Singaporeans enjoy travelling during these “summer breaks” but revisiting familiar vacation spots may leave us more restless than rested. Embark on a new adventure with editorial assistant Nico Lim as he proposes a new list of summer destinations on page 100. That is right, the Men’s Folio team took on a different perspective for this Hot Summer Issue – aka the “June Holidays” edition. For instance, editor-in-chief Wilson Lim approached the fashion spread in the spirit of tranquillity (page 62), as opposed to the usual high-octane sexiness surrounding the season, where our idea of a holiday is to be away from all the city buzz. On the other hand, fashion stylist and writer Sapphire Chin snapped the holiday dreamers back to reality by putting together a practical wardrobe for men who decide to stay in the city without missing out on the vacation vibes (page 24). Deputy editor Yong Wei Jian also steered away from typical sporty watches for the season and turned the spotlight on timepieces that are built for larger-than-life adventures (page 30). Naturally, the hottest subject for our summer issue is our cover star, SF9’s Ro Woon, who, beyond his 1.92m towering presence, has a burning thirst for greater heights in his career (page 52). His assured combination of charm, groove, and vocal prowess proves to be irresistible. The other natural for the sizzling season is cocktails, and editorial assistant Daniel Li came up with a list of local bars to check out this summer (page 102). It is going to be a different summer, and everyone’s ideal is to discover a fresh fleeting love for the season. Hopefully, this Hot Summer Issue gets you in the mood.
