Merriam-Webster defines duality — the theme of the Men’s Folio April ’24 — as
“the quality or state of having two different or opposite parts or elements.” At
its purest, concepts such as light and darkness, life and death, stillness and
movement come to mind. Only one can exist in the absence of the other, neither can
be present or absent — that is the beauty of duality. In our daily lives, duality takes a
more pronounced role than we would like to think so. Beauty and ugliness, positive and
negative, liberty and authority, true and false are the bare minimum we contend with. In
the Men’s Folio April ’24 issue, we explore the facets of duality across the magazine.
Gracing this issue’s double cover are MINGI and YUNHO from South Korean boy
band ATEEZ dressed in Onitsuka Tiger. Beyond the stories of fame and life in the
limelight, the cover story tells a tale of fate and friendship with interviews with their
members WOOYOUNG and YEOSANG.

Once again, BIG is back. The annual supersized Men’s Folio March issue tradition continues this 2024 as the Men’s Folio team kicks into full throttle for the year ahead. The Men’s Folio March ’24 issue explores changing narratives around the fashion industry, starting with a concentration of ideas conceptualised by the team.

Thanks to a certain Saint Valentine, we celebrate love in February. The Men’s Folio February ’24 issue is themed Love, First as a nod to putting love and its facets first. What is love; is it that warm fuzzy feeling you get at the thought of that special someone, or perhaps a gesture like leaving cut fruits on the table? I chanced upon a handwritten note by a certain kid, aged 6, and it read, “Love is when you’re missing some of your teeth, but you’re not afraid to smile because you know your family and friends will still love you even though some of you is missing.”

After putting out nine issues so far, it is only fitting to name the Men’s Folio December/January ’24, Celebration. Having surpassed ourselves again this year with monumental projects such as announcing the ambassadorships for our cover stars Mile Phakphum and PP Krit with Dior and Balenciaga respectively, and the PEDRO campaign featuring Hwang In-youp, we close the year with a watershed moment — Men’s Folio’s first ever four-cover release.

In a world where conformity often takes centre stage, the non-conformists amongst us stand as beacons challenging the status quo. In the Men’s Folio November 2023 issue — where art takes precedence and we celebrate it —  we dive deep into the creative journeys of these artistic mavericks and learn about the inspirations that drive them to venture where others dare not.

In a world where the boundaries between reality and the digital realm blur with
each passing day, we find ourselves at an intriguing crossroads where screens
mediate our every interaction, and interpersonal connection has evolved from
handshakes to emoji-laden texts. We celebrate Men’s Folio’s 26th anniversary this
October with the theme U / I, a play on the most fundamental interface of all. Instead
of sophisticated codes that bridge the gap between us and the ever-expanding
virtual universe, we explore the connection between “You and I”. As we navigate
the complexities of modern life, technological advancements have transformed
relationships. We have the ability to reach out to anyone, anywhere, at any time, yet
the question remains: are we truly connected? The Men’s Folio October 2023 issue
explores the nuances and beauty of the human bonds and touches.

This Men’s Folio September 2023 issue takes the theme of Then & Now. In a ceaselessly evolving world, it is essential to pause and reflect on the journey that has brought us to this point. This issue is a tribute to the contrasts, continuities, and transformations that shaped the men’s fashion landscape. Throughout the pages, you will find a collection of stories that bridge the gap between the past and the present, offering a poignant exploration of how our world has evolved. Take this as an invitation through time.

As a homegrown title founded in Singapore, the Men’s Folio August issues tend to be special since it coincides with Singapore’s birth month. For several years, part of the contents have been skewed to take on a local spin, celebrating all things Singapore. This year is no different, and in the Men’s Folio August 2023 issue, themed Hometown Glory, we invite you to delve into the profound significance of home. From cherished memories that shaped us to our evolving identities, this issue celebrates the places that inspire, the people
who love and the essence of who we truly are.

What comes to mind when you think of summer? As the warm embrace of summer envelops us, we find ourselves transported to a realm of endless possibilities and vibrant energy. In the June/July ’23 issue of Men’s Folio, we invite you to embark on a journey of Summer Dreaming, where movement becomes the catalyst for exploration and self-expression.

A streak of reflection — accentuating or glaring — draws attention in more ways than one. You see it in clothes, bags, watches, jewellery, or even slicked-back hair — even in the subtlest of tinge highlights and intricate details that artisans pour their souls into. The very same philosophy guides the Men’s Folio May ’23 theme High Shine In All Forms. Where we delve into the slightest of sparkles — both figuratively and literally.

The theme for Men’s Folio April 2023 issue is ‘Duality’; a theme best exemplified by Thai power couple and business partners JJ Krissanapoom and Thanaerng Kanyawee in Bottega Veneta and Bvlgari. 

Throughout the pages of this issue, you will find a diverse range of stories that dives into duality’s complex — contradictory yet fascinating qualities. From examining the tension between tradition and modernity in a report on novel timepieces by Managing Editor, Asaph Low, to the intersection of masculinity and femininity with the Fendi Peekaboo ISeeU X Cross for the Spring/Summer '23 season by Associate Fashion Editor, Manfred Lu. 

As we move on to the grooming pages, Beauty & Grooming Director, Bryan Goh showcases the art of duality in unorthodox ways of perceiving products — from using bar soaps the same way as one would scent the body with perfume to hair masks that locks in hydration just as skincare would. We have also left no stone unturned in our quest to uncover the various dimensions of duality, even through culture. Associate Digital & Lifestyle Editor, Charmaine Tan investigates the far reaches of design in an interview with the Singaporean participants of Milan Design Week.

The universe began with a bang, not any ordinary one but a big one.
Scientists theorised it as the Big Bang — a hot, dense and infinitely
small point, known as a singularity, rapidly expanded in a massive
explosion approximately 13.8 billion years ago. This expansion caused
the universe to cool and allowed matter and energy to form, eventually
forming galaxies, stars and planets.

In many ways, how things are today mirrors the Big Bang. Societies,
institutions and beliefs began as a theory, a concentration of ideas, and
even hopes and dreams before being brought to life through action and
over time. Men's Folio March 2023 issue takes the theme of Big Bang as
well, firstly as an ode to the Men's Folio March large format tradition. The
issue also explores changing narratives around the fashion industry,
starting with a concentration of ideas and concepts from the Men's
Folio team.

The Men’s Folio February ’23 issue is the curtain raiser for the year. A year filled with endless possibilities, exciting projects and inspiring stories to share. First of which is the February ’23 issue themed Love, First, a play of the word lovers. In this issue, Men’s Folio explores communities where love is expressed in different ways.


A time for celebration, festivities and good cheer; a time for reflection,
internalisation and reset, December holds so much meaning for many as
we arrive at the end of the year. How time flew — especially when much of
normalcy returned after the pandemic — headlined by an influx of events and travel.
The Men’s Folio team huffed and puffed and huffed even more as we finally crossed
2022’s finish line.

Traditionally, art takes the theme of the Men's Folio November issues, but we are taking a more nuanced approach this year. This side step explores collisions as ideas, at times conflicting or contradictory, coming harmoniously together to create art in various guises. It informs this month's theme of Culture Collision as we break it down across the pillars of fashion, watches, grooming and lifestyle.

This October marks an important milestone as we celebrate our 25th anniversary! For the past 24 years, Men's Folio has been at the forefront of fashion as we left our indelible mark on the Singapore media and fashion scene. We embraced the ebb and flow of fashion since the moment Men's Folio started one fateful day in October and took on a spirit of boldness and verve over the years. That same energy and attitude allowed us to navigate the many years to come as we grew and established ourselves as the oldest homegrown men's fashion magazine. 


While it is a joyous occasion, it is incredibly humbling as I reflect on the immeasurable amount of support, help and love Men's Folio has received from many of our advertisers, partners and freelancers over the years. With the rest of the Men's Folio team, namely Bryan Goh, Izwan Abdullah, Manfred Lu, Charmaine Tan and Lance Aeron, and myself, Asaph Low, we would like to extend our deepest appreciation to all of you! We would not have made it this far, and none of these would have been possible if not for the amount of trust and faith shown to us and the renewed vision of Men's Folio since 2018, supporting Asians. Asians became our North Star and continue to be. If we, as a homegrown title, do not lend these people a voice and a platform for their stories to be heard, then who will? It is apparent from the moment you pick up a copy of Men’s Folio and flip through the various sections Celebrities, personalities, creatives and freelancers share a common background and one that we are extremely proud to support.

September has always been a key month for Men's Folio, and this year's edition is no different. There is a greater emphasis on fashion in our September editions, even though fashion is in our DNA. Opulence takes the issue's theme, characterised by luxuriousness, above all its other definitions. While fashion can be categorised differently, there are invisible threads that connect them and luxuriousness or opulence, as mentioned, is one of them.

This Men's Folio August '22 issue acts on it in certain ways, creating a detachment but still being faithful to the Men's Folio DNA. Our Heroes theme, which has served us well for the past few years, takes an evolutionary approach and I’m proud, together with the rest of the team, to share the newest theme for the August '22 issue: “Hometown Glory”. There is a slight hint of regret to move past the Heroes theme, but given what everyone has gone through during the pandemic, that title is befitting of those who have sacrificed selflessly. Yes, Adele does come to mind with our new theme, but it also fits in perfectly with our DNA — to shine the spotlight on local talents who are putting Singapore on the global map.

Our Men's Folio August '22 cover stars Dharni, Tabitha Nauser, Glenn Yong and Shye — supported by Onitsuka Tiger — share their connections with Singapore, and how that has shaped their identity and career. 

The June/July issues of Men’s Folio traditionally mark the start of summer and this is no different. Titled Summer Dreaming, the curation emphasises the coolest or in this case, hottest happenings in and around the fashion world.

Before diving right in, a segway into the introduction of our cover star — Choi Young-Jae of South Korean boyband GOT7. Donning Omega’s latest timepieces, Young-Jae talks about GOT7’s latest EP release, a little about himself and gives fans a little teaser on his latest solo album.

Headlining the June/July ‘22 issue is also the Men’s Folio Grooming Awards led by Deputy Editor Bryan Goh and a panel of six other beauty and grooming insiders. After spending close to five months testing and vetting various products across 68 categories, we are pleased to announce and send our heartiest congratulations to the winners of the biggest edition of Men’s Folio Grooming Awards yet.

The start of June marks the official launch of the highly anticipated Gucci collaboration with Adidas. That is not the only noteworthy news as Pre-Fall ‘22 clothing and accessories from the likes of Bottega Veneta and Prada amongst others are captured through the creative minds of Associate Creative Director Izwan Abdullah and Senior Fashion Stylist & Writer Manfred Lu. Fans of art will be thrilled to learn about fashion’s involvement in the Venice Biennale as the 59th edition of the fair chronicles the intersections of which art and fashion, such as Christian Dior Couture, meet.

Our features of personalities make for great reads as we chat with Zenith’s CEO Julien Tornare about his fifth anniversary with the Swiss watchmaker, the state of the print industry with Jiahui Tan of Fable, and three fledging filmmakers showing at the European Film Festival with the help of contributor Prashant Somosundram from The Projector.

“Fashion is a mirror of the era in which we live,” the late Italian journalist, Franca Sozzani once said. It is a school of thought that extends into every issue we put together, a contemplation of reality and subsequently, an expression of the cultural zeitgeist through our unique lens.

The May issue themed “A New Perspective”, is a redesigned way of seeing and perceiving the world. It is an ethereal vision brought to life not only by the Men’s Folio team but also informed by the point of view of generations of unabashed talents.

Fronting the cover is 24-year-old Singaporean athlete Loh Kean Yew dressed in the iconic Ralph Lauren Polo Shirt that is celebrating its 50th anniversary this year. The history-making badminton player who took home the Badminton World Federation World Championship title gives us an in-depth look into his trajectory thus far and what lies in the road ahead. 

Equally riveting is “In His Orbit” (page 100), a reflection on Buckminster Fuller’s Radical Curiosity: In the Orbit of Buckminster Fuller exhibition housed at the ArtScience Museum. An unpacking of Fuller’s fascinating mind, alongside that of noteworthy contemporary artists, architects, and designers, the feature is a buffet spread for the intellect.  To end, we’ve also sat down with Universal Music Singapore’s youngest signee Syaz Smooth (page 98) to dig deeper into the psyche of a young local artist.
 Through our curation of punchy visuals and beautifully strung together with dialogue, the May issue is representative of a unified inquisition into the life that we, and the many bright minds whom we have collaborated with, have embarked on. Hopefully, this is the catalyst you needed to form your own unique worldview.

The phenomenon of life is a deeply unique experience. An introspective journey that meanders through time only to lead us back to ourselves, it’s a search for solace, a meditative state of mind, and the discovery of our individual significance.

This idea of a phenomenon underscores Men’s Folio April 2022 issue. Leading with the intent to dig deeper into the human consciousness, the team has gathered emotive imagery and stories meant to nudge an afterthought.

Birthed from the same school of thought, one of this issue’s cover subjects decked in Cartier, David Yong is the epitome of a modern hybrid man who juggles multiple professions and has found harmony between each as he navigates various settings.

In timepieces, Asaph Low looked at shapes and forms that go beyond traditional shapes with form watches, from Cartier and Bvlgari to Bell & Ross, Girard-Perregaux and Franck Muller, that set themselves apart from the crowd.

Deep dive into the psyche of a new generation of fashion archivists who are pioneering a new wave in preserving history. In Mechanical sculptures, the Men’s Folio team investigates the fascinating mind of a multimedia artist whose works reside years ahead in the future. Equally fascinating is a think piece that gleans insight into episodic memories – otherwise coined “core memory” by the TikTok generation.

For this special March 2022 issue, Men's Folio delves into the “Extraordinary Magnetism” of fashion, an undeniable allure that ceaselessly draws people in. The beauty of fashion largely hinges on its limitless bounds. No idea is too big. 

Having this in mind, the Men's Folio team stretched its limits with this issue. With over 200 pages of locally produced content, not only is it hefty in its physical format, the ideas explored within the pages are equally weighty. 

 Fittingly, this issue’s cover story, featuring South Korean boy band BTS – undeniably one of the biggest global acts – makes the history books at MEN’S FOLIO as the most extensive cover story to date. The team brings you behind the curtain in our candid chats with each member, clad in Louis Vuitton no less, where we take a walk down their road to fame.  

March is a big month for fashion. With fashion month in full swing, the team launches into a contemplation of the Spring/Summer ’22 menswear collections (from Dior, Gucci, Prada, Fendi, Zegna, Hermes and Saint Laurent just to name a few) on and beyond the runways. As the world trudges along into a post-pandemic world, the team extrapolates the role of fashion in the cultural zeitgeist. What will this era in fashion say about how we live today? 

 On the same riff, Men's Folio examines the effect contemporary society has had on the way men groom themselves. As the lines between timeworn gender stereotypes have blurred, self-care is no longer a domain reserved for femmes, it has become a way of life for everyone.

Lastly, the team also invites you to take a closer look at the highlights of the LVMH Watch Week 2022 and revel in the novelties of watchmaking. The unmatched innovation of watchmakers, just as fashion does, is a testament to bringing out-of-the-box ideas to life.      

As you leaf through the pages of this March issue, you will escape into a realm of unbridled musing and dream of a world that stretches beyond your perceived reality.

Imagination guides us through the ebb and flow of uncertainty and allows us to create and evolve. It is essential for maintaining optimism in this era. Hence, the imagination takes center stage as the leitmotif in this issue.

While fashion finds itself heavily rooted in commerce and consumerism, it’s in equal parts entrenched in creativity and self-expression. Through the highly stylised imagery in “Present, but never in the moment” (p.42), we delve beyond the frivolity of fashion to contemplate the binary ideas of gender. In “Final Light” (p.62), we find Virgil Abloh’s Louis Vuitton Menswear Spring/Summer ’22 collection reframing the archetypal connections between social dress codes and boyhood. This concept — the lightness of being and joy of expressing one's self — materialises too in a Dior Parfum special with a highlight on Dior Homme Sport, the French House's latest fragrance that proves that flankers can be solid in concept and punchy in weight.  What better way to herald in a new season of watch novelties than with the opening spread of the year focusing on various calendar complications. Time is immaterial but horologists managed to devise nifty complications to record the passages of time.

The search for our cover star led us to Anson Lo, a triple threat in the Hong Kong entertainment business. Glean an insight into his road to stardom, how he pivoted his trajectory from a 12-member boy band ensemble to a solo artist and his roadmap for the future.

Whether in work or life, the ability to dream has always held immense power. It has been a catalyst for change, fuel for passion and a step towards freedom. These were the very things we had in mind when we began working on the last issue for the year.

It all starts with a dream. Dreams transcend reality. They inspire an insatiable drive to accomplish; a relentless pursuit of learning; a limitless exploration of possibilities. In fact, our December cover star Darren Barnet’s career trajectory from a SoulCycle instructor to a Hollywood star stands testament to just how important dreams can be.

The allure of fashion too very much lies in the same vein. A product of imagination, It’s a vehicle for self-expression. In the “Eyes Right Up” fashion editorial, we curate headpieces from local and regional designers that speak of the fantastical worlds they have brought to life through their work. We also dreamt up a realm of romantic dreamers featuring the three winner of the Men’s Folio Model of the Year 2021 in the “Transformation” spread. 

In this issue, we share our vision and representation of not only tangible, physical fashion but also dove deeper into layers beneath. It’s about how we approach life, explore new possibilities and take the liberty to build a dream.

The great collisions between the concepts of art and fashion have the ability to move one quite profoundly while juxtaposing concepts of both shallow and profound meaning. Think of them like a venn diagram — the punk versus the political, capitalism and the creativity or the glamorous versus the everyday. 

Could it be said that collaborations or as our November issue’s theme suggests, collisions are a form of resistance? Yes, it could be taken like that but the rules of the game are never explicitly written. Is there a rule to how one wants to dress? Most definitely not, expressing oneself the way he or she wants to do so is the strongest political statement they can make. Are there restrictions on what forms the template of Asian talent? Any of the talents in the November issue would tell you otherwise.  

While we rewrote said rules for this issue, the only question we would like to pose to you would be how are you nourishing your mind and soul today with art? We hope you find the answer within these pages and most importantly, something that resonates with you to empower you to be the best version of yourself today.

The Men’s Folio October 2021 Brave New World issue is a product of what the magazine’s previous Editor-in-Chief Wilson Lim and his team have aspired to for over three years. How could they produce a magazine that aims to provide inspiration and context on the happenings of today's modern world while focusing on the beating heart of what makes Singapore, Singapore.  

What does it also mean to be brave in today’s world? One that is fraught with difficulties and uncertainties? Perhaps, an opinion piece by Dylan Thomas Seah-Cheang (a 20 year old helming SANO-D, a local disinfectant brand) and his grandfather puts it best. Sometimes, one has to dive in head first after drawing on the richness and experience or his past. Even the three athletes profiled in collaboration with Y-3 led by Art Director of Integrated Media Izwan Abdullah and Fashion Stylist & Writer Manfred Lu have an important point to push across: continue doing what makes one feels the most confident, the rewards and revelations will slowly unfold. 

Also featured within the magazine is the second edition of our Blue Ribbon Watch Awards, a concept dreamed up by Watch & Features Editor Asaph Low to highlight what makes a timepiece truly tick today. Nods to sustainability, mobility and personality are what crowns these eight timepieces as pieces to cherish and love today, heirlooms for future generations. 

Lastly, our cover stars JUN. K and CHANSUNG of 2PM reflect too on what the messaging of music should be today. Uplifting, motivational and with an ability to transcend languages and cultures. And in true Men’s Folio fashion, Asaph has managed to tickle some trivia out of them. CHANSUNG’s trivia is particularly potent: no matter one’s standing in society or importance in a group, make sure to treat them equally well.

“Reading is Fundamental” might be a popular challenge in drag culture that refers to the art of throwing shade at another queen with love, but its literal meaning could not be more apt for this “Big F” issue. 

The creation of fashion is synonymous with knowledge of the visual language, history and culture. It is once said that fashion is frivolous, yet throughout generations, sub-culture groups have been leading its waves — influencing politically charged works in the arena and pushing designers to consider their positioning in society.

Utility serves as an important context to the many decisions made in fashion and contemporary culture. Art director of Integrated Media, Izwan Abdullah and fashion stylist and writer, Manfred Lu have packed these examples in the September ’21 fashion bumper issue of Men’s Folio. The Fall/Winter ’21 trend report on page 30 is a collectively reflective and deep-rooted wish to head outside while the fashion spread on page 94 is a poetic expression of movement captured in stills. The conversation of democracy is also examined alongside as we showcase the latest fashion spread (page 132) with four gentlemen to challenge the media’s fixation on youth culture. 

While styles like denim have become a staple piece in fashion, the industry itself is becoming more pervasive in making consumers fall victims to trends. The discarding of clothing and threads is an issue today, and we want to be more committed to presenting narratives that push for the appreciation of ateliers and craftsmanship, rather than quick buys. Eyes on the prize, they say. In the wake of global upheaval and the climate crisis, perhaps the prize is a more critical look into sustainability and sustenance — including the emotional and mental aspects of fashion work.

So if reading is fundamental, what Men’s Folio cannot lose sight of is how people want to grow, and what makes sense to learn from in current environments.

The fourth iteration of the “Heroes” issue returns this August ’21 to tell as many Singaporean stories as physically possible. These are their stories of pushing through with great fortitude to make the world a better place to live in and remind us all that it is possible to take charge of our own narratives. Leading this August ’21 “Heroes” issue are eight champions — Aisyah Aziz, Benjamin Kheng, Edward Russell, Fariz Jabba, James Kumar, Kimberly Wang, Rozz, Sonia Chew — that unfolds in a triple cover to bring this message across. The Men’s Folio team has also searched out industry changemakers in theatre, wildlife, fashion, healthcare and music to further the message on page 46. The Top 10 contestants of the annual Model Of The Year competition is also unveiled on page 70 to show the world of Singapore’s might to supply international male model faces. The accessories spread on page 22 bring together the fantastical world of locally-grown fungi and the next Fall/Winter ’21 accessories to look forward to. Working in a sterile and hyper-commercialised landscape, moving the needle on Asian talents is the constant effort of Men’s Folio in these 24 year. Throughout the years, all these feats could not have been achieved without the creative Men’s Folio collaborators and they are lovingly embraced in a Singapore-style illustration on page 42. In other words, you have what is currently the best version of Men’s Folio sitting right in your hands as a testament to the Men’s Folio conviction.

When the June/July ’21 theme of “Summer Sonic” was conceived at the end of last year, the Men’s Folio team was optimistic about returning to “normalcy” — in anticipation of music festivals during the Summer seasons. Alas, the discovery of COVID-19 variants has changed the course of recovery, leaving many frustrated on account of the individual and the nation.

In the age of prioritising oneself over others, which has briefly acted against various social movements to become “what society wants me to be first”, issues in communication and understanding coupled with the lack of empathetic listening persist. 

In this Summer Sonic issue, Men’s Folio amplifies the value of communication. Contributor Fariza Salleh started her podcast Frankly, My Dear because she believes in the need to listen and empathise with differing views in the betterment of oneself (page 36). 

The route to better understanding and shared communication includes having an inner monologue with oneself. Local musician, Fauxe (page 38) puts it best — “Big on empathy. Big on knowledge. Big on love. Big on every single aspect of life that isn’t about music… That no matter what you do, you are all going to expire eventually. So don’t dream about it, try small and live it — and then watch it become a big reality.”

Empathy also drives the second annual edition of Men’s Folio Grooming Awards (page 92), where a brand new make-up category has found its way. Approaching beauty democratically is especially pertinent here as deputy editor, Bryan Goh took a large stride forward to involve industry veterans — considering their different grooming preferences and needs. The winners were selected based on each product’s ability to meet a huge set of demands and expectations — one can be assured that coming to a consensus was no easy feat but thanks to their unbridled passions, the panel kept going.

Once again, the Men’s Folio team ambitions to light the torch of abundance in all our readers — this summer and always.

For the Men’s Folio May ’21 issue, “Future Perfect” represents a quest to harness technology to augment the excellence of what we already love. Rather than replacing analogue entirely, the team adapts the complexities of both to create a more nuanced fashion perspective of the current climate.

Truth of the matter is, human identity is always about relations — what “I” am is not what “you” are; dissecting everything into categories. If Future Perfect is the goal, then everyone should own the space that they want to occupy considering the lengths it entails — there is no magic bullet to get there.
