“The wider world perceives fashion as frivolity that should be done away with. The point is that fashion is the armour to survive the reality of everyday life. I don’t think you can do away with it. It would be like doing away with civilisation,” highly acclaimed fashion photographer Bill Cunningham once said, eloquently setting the premise for this issue. In today’s fast-paced digital world, it is easy to assume that traditional modes of self-expression have become obsolete, overshadowed by the allure of social media and the like. Although it’s true that technology has improved our ability to communicate, it has, in the process, rekindled interest in conventional approaches that confer a sense of connection that taps into wisdom and experiences between generations. Moreover, they are also favourable since they instil the values of patience, discipline and craftsmanship. After all, the only way to truly comprehend something is to embrace its heritage.

One person who would know about self-expression well is none-other-than our cover star, Lisha Ho. “I see myself aligning with the ever-changing nature of fashion. Just as fashion transforms over time, I too embrace a constant process of exploration, learning and pushing my boundaries. This approach allows me to let the passage of time craft the remarkable milestones of my journey,” she told us during the interview. Turn to p132 for the full interview.

“Instead of delving too deep into how rap music is changing, I’d like to say that the musical landscape for all artists has expanded. From my perspective, various rappers are using rap as a musical tool or device, blending it with a wide range of elements to transform their music… If I had to pick a struggle [I’ve so far encountered in my young career], I think the fact that I had to participate in a survival show before I could truly develop my self-identity as an artist, leaving some room to be desired in terms of how I was telling my story, since I was getting constant feedback and being judged,” said South Korean rapper and the L’Officiel cover girl Lee Youngji during our interview. 

In the creative realm, originality necessitates a desire to venture into uncharted territory, challenge the status quo, and push the edge. It’s a personal commitment to be innovative that allows her voice to be heard loud and clear, commanding attention and evoking astonishment. And Lee is one of those people. The Coach newest global ambassador further added, “I think the slogan “Courage To Be Real” is the reason why I’m collaborating with Coach. It reflects the brand’s desire for a confident and self-assured ambassador who is unafraid to express themselves. And since I’m someone who is not afraid to reveal myself, Coach probably saw me in that light. The May issue of L’Officiel Malaysia reminds us that freedom is paramount in life. Malaysian artiste Daiyan Trisha makes her L’Officiel Malaysia cover debut for the April 2023 issue, dressed in Gucci Spring/Summer 2023 and reenacting its “Double Vision” concept. Diving straight into this month’s eco-conscious focus, Sustainable or Greenwashing questions fashion’s favourite buzzword to prove that all that glitters is not always green. For bijoux, Green Goddesses showcases an array of verdant-hued timepieces while Modern Heirlooms shines the spotlight on precious jewellery for now and forever, forged at the axis of contemporary design and environmental responsibility. L’Officiel Malaysia makes a stunning comeback as part of the L’Officiel Inc. family under AMTD Group this March 2023. Chinese models Pan Haowen and Estelle Chen grace the cover, dressed in Chanel Spring/Summer 2023 and emanating the issue’s “Girl Power” theme. From cover to cover, a special spotlight shines on the people, places and objects wielding influence that is effortless, discreet and timeless. While Power Play invites you to delve into the history and evolution of power dressing, The Bling Queens introduces the all-female creative powerhouse in the rarified world of high jewellery. We will come to agreement that red is a powerful hue in beauty, showcased in Red Blooded Woman. In Raising The Bar, we meet a new wave of talented ladies breaking down the barriers of the male-dominated bartending scene, one cocktail at a time. Finally, we introduce you to the bunch of young and talented emerging artists driving Malaysia’s contemporary art scene as well as Japanese pop artist Rina Sawayama on how they are reshaping and influencing the world with their unabashed creativity.

A significant month in national history, L’Officiel Malaysia pays tribute to “Malaysia Pride” in the August 2022 issue. Gwen Lu, a Penang native and bona fide international supermodel makes a smashing return to front her second cover for the magazine, donning sleek Saint Laurent by Anthony Vaccarello. Art and design is a theme embraced by L’Officiel Malaysia since its very inception. This year’s June/July 2022 line-up is no less exciting, being a brand-centric one that explores the emblems and signatures of luxury maisons in all their forms and functions. The cover story features Singaporean beauty entrepreneur, Kim Lim, who is pretty much a force to be reckoned with not only in the way she has designed and built her business ventures, but also for her personal style and pursuits. From a discourse on how brands powerfully utilise hues to differentiate and augment their DNAs in Are Colour The New Logos to how non-logo symbols speak out loud and clear about brand identification in Non-Logo Logo, we are led deeper into many design journeys. Bijoux houses are equally adept at reinterpreting their brand “coat of arms” into haute creations with creative aplomb in Mind Over Matter, while The Design of Scent spotlights the art of integrating the creation and crafting of perfume and flacon in high perfumery. For May 2022, L’Officiel Malaysia hits the stride with “The Pop Issue”. MINA, the second TWICE member to grace our cover, goes natural as she channels modern femininity in pretty Kate Spade New York ensembles. Shining the spotlight on the close connection between fashion and pop culture—fuelled by the most influential fashion personalities now hailing from cinema, music, TV and social media—Ready To Wear (Again) highlights the revival of ’90s and aughts fashion, made popular once again by the street style of Gen Z celebs and influencers. Elsewhere, Hollywood glam and ‘80s sophistication rise to a high in Sunset Boulevard and New Radical respectively. The dominant hip-hop culture and its love for the extravagant sparkle of iced out wristwatches and jewellery is showcased to perfection in The Bling Ring. Meanwhile, Squad Game identifies the main pop girls who are making celebrity endorsement great again in the world of luxury jewellery. From celebrity to art, Factory Girl takes on a stunningly graphic Pop Art sensibility that would make Andy Warhol proud. Don’t Look Back rounds things up with a lesson in pop culture through the revealing and enlightening tales behind the scenes in the music, fashion and art worlds.

For the April 2022 issue, L’Officiel Malaysia goes with the flow with a “Human Nature” theme to highlight the inseparable co-existence between humans and nature. Sarawakian musician and artist Alena Murang, who integrates her ancestral heritage and the natural world into her artistry, is a bold and beautiful choice to showcase the iconic Panthère de Cartier jewellery collection. The world of precious watchmaking is synonymous with mesmerising menagerie and beautiful blooms as perennial sources of inspiration in Guardians of Nature. Indulging the creativity of our inner child, Pretty Natural challenges conventional ideas of beauty with the imperfect use of colour and cosmetic paints. Finally, Hometown Glory shines the spotlight on the nation’s most breathtaking ecotourism locales that have the rest of the world green with envy.

The month of March truly augurs well as we celebrate the International Women’s Day, where tributes pour in to mark the many endeavours and exploits of women all around the world. L’Officiel Malaysia also pays a fitting homage to women in fashion for the March 2022 issue with a cover story inspired by women behind the scenes. It features Malaysian model Janice Low, dressed in Dior, starring as a vision of both feminine strength and beauty. By Women, For Women features four iconic women designers who changed the way women dress today, alongside Women Of The Influence, showcasing the trailblazers who opened up the windows of possibility in lifting the limit on what women can achieve in the world of jewellery design. Reinforcing the empowerment narrative is Strong With Spirit, a curation of modern classic timepieces, anchored by high-precision calibres, and enduring design and materials. In The Sound Of Scent, hear from Parfums Henry Jacques CEO, Anne-Lise Cremona, on how the brand’s new creation uniquely enhances a women’s identity. Rounding up the highlights is an incisive interview, On The Basis Of Sex, where four local women advocates take a bold stand to level the gender playing field by challenging the status quo in debunking myths on female autonomy.

In the prelude to Spring, L’Officiel Malaysia celebrates all the pleasurable things in life, both simple or indulgent, for the February 2022 issue. Evoking the mood of the season is Korean actress E Jiah, whose fresh, modern beauty is the perfect match for the sleek and chic Tiffany Knot jewellery collection by Tiffany & Co.. Joy Dressing heralds the top fashion trends of Spring/Summer 2022, showing how a no-holds-barred philosophy will inject more than a pep in your style quotient. Feast your eyes on the luscious bejewelled creations in Café Society, as well as the decadent Métiers d’Art decorative techniques embellishing the dials of Chinese zodiac-inspired haute horlogerie in Eye of the Tiger. To cap off the issue, a revisit of tried-and-true comfort food the likes featured in Fast Life is guaranteed to soothe the (culinary) soul, now and forever. 

L’Officiel Malaysia concludes 2021 with a rejuvenating “Hope & Rebirth” theme to carry us triumphantly into 2022. Fronting the last cover of the year and evoking a natural vision of new beginnings is local supermodel Tuti Noor, dressed in Bottega Veneta and Van Cleef & Arpels. Bright Young Things kicks things off with six new-gen Asian design talents blazing a trail towards the future of fashion. Just in time for the year end is our curation of fashionable gifts listed in Holiday Cheer. Shining the light in jewellery design is Where Do We Go Now? where a new wave of exciting hires is generating buzz everywhere. To signify the trending theme of green-hued watches is Born For Glory, conceived against a backdrop of new life and abundance. Solar Eclipse is a beauty story that inspires us to venture into the light, bathed in the sultry shimmer of golden flecks and bronze washes. Finally, to herald a new era of travel, Easy Does It highlights the art of self-care with a shortlist of curative, soul-nourishing programmes we should all be signing up for in 2022.

The L’Officiel Malaysia November 2021 issue revives the “Indie Spirit” to give a much-needed boost to our current state of mind and energy. Japanese ingénue Natsumi Sekine is the perfect protagonist to front the cover, emanating a powerful vision in the gentlest designs paired with Cartier’s iconic jewellery. Independent practitioners are thriving and in Indie Darlings, we bring you on a round-the-world shopping trip to the coolest independent fashion stores. Closer to home, National Treasure introduces the young and vibrant generation who is shaking things up and spearheading the demi-fine movement in the jewellery industry. Concurrently, luxury watchmaking’s Free To Be Happy mantra infuses liberation as it explores visual concepts and colours that appeal to the free-spirited. Creativity knows no bounds in Come As You Are with a rare brand of avant-garde and fantastical beauty. Meet Gen Z-er Zamaera, who inspires in taking the male-dominated local rap scene by storm and navigating the music industry as an indie artist. Wrapping up the issue is Calling The Shots, a celebration of the rise of independent filmmakers in Malaysian cinema who are making waves in the field. 

L’Officiel Malaysia wakes up to the October 2021 issue with lovely K-pop chanteuse Tzuyu of Twice on the cover, dressed in Coach’s eclectic Fall/Winter 2021 collection—just as the country is reawakening and opening up after months of lockdown. To mark the comeback of many things and a much fuller “in real life”, we are celebrating all notions of reemergence, recovery, rebirth and revival by paying homage to the most memorable designs and creations of the past decades that have endured and are now staging a comeback. In Roaring 2020s, taking cues from the cyclical nature of fashion, we look to the past to predict the comeback trends that will define the next decade of style. This season’s bijoux runway trends highlighted in In With The Old are looking pretty cinematic, throwing back to the fashionable decades from the ’70s to the ’00s. Find out which fine watchmaking brands are renewing timepiece models from the mid-20th century era and earlier in Classics Redux. Closing the issue with a bang is Hipsters Don’t Lie where unforgettable electronics from the past are singled out for the zoomers who value authenticity and the intrigue of life in the simpler times.

L’Officiel Malaysia’s sixth anniversary issue—a milestone that coincides with the highly anticipated L’Officiel centennial—pays homage to the generations of creativity and innovation from the past, present and future.
