This subtle interplay of patterns and textures bridging the worlds of high fashion and artistry is a theme echoed in Bottega Veneta’s meticulous weaving of the past, present and future of Italian culture, heritage and art (p. 32). These brands, though distinct, remind us that fashion is a canvas for creativity, offering a playground for self-expression and individuality.
Furthermore, iconic fashion meets iconic timekeeping via Longines (p. 52), Bell & Ross (p. 54) and Cartier (p. 56) – suggesting that style is not just about appearance, but also an intricate dance between form and function.
Finally, what better representation for indulgence and elevated living than a week in the Maldives? A destination (p. 138) that reflects the seamless blend of colours and textures found in the world of high fashion. Its azure waters and pristine beaches offer a serene escape, and a euphoric sensation akin to slipping into a beautifully tailored ensemble like the Giorgo Armani (p. 98) fits that cover star Eddie Peng wears.

In this tome, we’ve packed what we believe to be the most worthy down payments for what we call “signifiers of taste and reputability” - the Rolex Datejust (p. 40) has been the choice of Presidents since its debut and so its inclusion should not be surprising. Also, what better symbol of accomplishment than Patek Calatrava Travel Time (p.44), one of the summits of horological achievement. The TAG Heuer Skippera (p. 50) is also one of those few beloved vintage revivals that managed to take a modern interpretation while being authentic to its spirit. The best bang for buck? One simply can’t go wrong with a watch that can handle formal or casual elegance like the Tudor Black Bay (p.54). 

Finally, we saved the best for major features: Our cover star, the new Louis Vuitton Tambour (p. 96) is an unexpected yet thoroughly welcomed addition to the luxury sports genre - the industry is finally waking up to the idea that integrated sports timepieces don’t always have to scream, they can be classy like the Parmigiani PF Tonda Sport (p. 106) or even sculptural, like an art piece you wear similar to what Hublot (p. 110) has with its Orlinski and Maxime collabs.

At the end of the day, great art needs a great canvas and this Fall/Winter 2023 menswear collections (p. 114) are an immaculate dreamscape for the sartorially discerning, serving as a reminder that oftentimes sumptuous fabric accompanied with exquisite tailoring make look simple but its minimalist sophistication makes your chosen accompaniments (like watches and jewellery) pop, for a lasting impression.

Humanity has gone from travelling for survival to doing so for prestige. But have we really? We discovered that flying 3,404 km to the Maldives (p. 108) isn’t about a flex of privilege instead it’s about human connections and that shared experience of new frontiers. Even a cruise (p. 54) is an anathema to many because you are mostly confined to a vessel, but at least it is no more a mystery than those who choose to indulge in staycations and those have become growingly popular even as international travel returns to full swing.

The quote, "Because it is there," is attributed to George Mallory, an English climber who perished during his third attempt to climb Mt. Everest. Beyond leisure, going into the great unknowns is what disrupters do. Suppressing all natural inclinations to risk aversion and going out there allowed Nelson Yap to turn Benjamin Barker regional (p. 86). Did you ever think there would be a Singaporean consumer electronics brand in Asia-Pacific? Jonathan Tan of Prism+ has done it (p. 66). What about new world wines (p. 50), and who would have thought fruits from the vine in places other than France can give the French a run for their money? Don Melchor did.

Even planet stewardship is in the middle of a paradigm shift - Partners of Rolex’s Perpetual Planet Initiative have discovered we need to shift from mere conservation of species to conservation of functions (p. 82) as our Editor discovered during an epic diving trip to the Caribbeans. Even fashion’s latest buzzwords like “Quiet Luxury” have been turned on their head with unexpected styling twists on foundational key investment pieces (the spread on p. 100) - no longer quiet but quite the splash.

Watches can be totemic. For Joel in the game and HBO's adaptation of The Last of Us, his watch is a reminder of the life he had (and lost) and now found again in Ellie, his young charge.

This year, Watches & Wonders took it back to the basics - gone were the overtly technical novelties of yesteryear and in their place, timepieces grounded in the evergreen classics of watchmaking’s first golden age. Check out our coverage of the fair from p. 36 to 55, paying special attention to Rolex, Cartier, Tudor, TAG Heuer and Zenith. Special mention has to be made for Parmigiani Fleurier as the brand continues its rapid ascent, building upon its momentum from the last edition of the watch fair after a significant stall.

Furthermore, nothing goes better with emotional introspection than whisky, we cast our eye on Glenrothes - no longer than overwhelming peaty tipple but something more nuanced (p. 70) and then there’s Royal Salut (p. 72). We got realistic about staycations as well, so many of us spend them in Orchard Road which fails to live up to the vacation part of the term, so we recommended The Outpost Hotel (p. 80) 

As Joel continues to seek his “Tao” in his stewardship of Ellie, our cover star Xu Bin (p. 108) has already found his. Having left Fuzhou at a young age for Singapore, his “hero’s journey” is one shaped by Jin Yong’s wuxia, and he knows that even if he enjoys a modicum of success now, his journey of learning is only just beginning. 

Religious orders in antiquity paid great emphasis on jewels and jewel accessories to reflect caritas (or light) a sign of divine beauty. Over time, it was treated as something not masculine enough and a result, men's jewellery-wearing traditions became minimalistic. It therefore stands to reason, that part of our fascination and rising popularity of head turning models from Cartier (p. 42), Jaeger-LeCoultre (p. 46), Vacheron Constantin (p. 40) and Gucci (p. 48), to name a few, have entered into the luxury milieu with more sophisticated finishing, decorative techniques and even gem setting - we still love bling!

From our wrists into our stomachs: we had the fantastic tasting experience with an exclusive $12,000 bottle of Glenrothes 42 years (p. 76) and witnessed the launch of Fuji whiskey (p. 78); it’s not just watchmaking and whiskies, wearables are also enjoying a renaissance! We explored wearables like the Apple Ultra (p. 84) and the Garmin Marq 2 (p. 86) that show these devices are no longer just sports bio-metric accessories but true lifelong companions. 

This issue, we also spoke to several captains of industry: August Mentor and Microsoft CTO Richard Koh (p. 128), Aesop Perfumer Barnabé Fillion (p. 124), Hublot CEO Ricardo Guadalupe (p. 114), Zenith CEO Julien Tornare (p. 110) and last but not least, our ass-kicking cover star Ludi Lin (p. 104) explains exactly why men shouldn’t fear failure - we learn more from the attempt than we do the success!



This month, we celebrate our mothers, our crushes, our wives, it is these women who push us to want to be the best men we could be. It is this quest that, since time immemorial, has drawn us to beautiful garments and flashy baubles, like peacocks astride a sociocultural stage. This spring/summer sees a literal smorgasbord of masculine sophistication from Dior (p. 20), Loro Piana (p. 22), Gucci (p. 24) and the return of Shanghai Tang (p. 30); Tiffany & Co. has also unexpectedly taken a walk along the street(wear) side with a Nike collaboration (p. 34).
We have baubles aplenty also as we discover by way of Cartier, men love diamonds too (p. 40) – or do we love them because women are drawn to them? 
Women do love a rebel and in Hublot, the watchmaking pioneer which mainstreamed rubber, we find a paragon in the Classic Fusion Original (p. 44)
and of course, what better emblem that we would die for them – aside from Bryan Adams’ (Everything I Do) I Do It For You – than the new Bell & Ross BR 01 Cyber Skull Bronze (p. 46)?
Headlining August Woman of the Month, Tan Kheng Hua loves hardworking, responsible men. And what better way than making our planet perpetual starting from the Galápagos (p. 90), conserving our manta rays with Panerai (p. 94) and being conversant in the language of our soul – art via the perspectives of Takashi Murakami (p. 98) and Yayoi Kusama (p. 108)?


Taking into account, the globalists who grace our pages and what they wore and marrying that with our superior ability to pick menswear trends for 2023, AUGUSTMAN found that our financial prudence tilted the scales in favour of stalwart brands with timeless yet distinctive offerings like Dior, Saint Laurent, Fendi, Emporio Armani, Gucci and also Bottega. In the realm of timekeeping,  the ethos of “buy less, buy better” continued with gems like the exquisite Cartier Tank Francaise gracing our cover star. Parmigiani’s new vision for the Chinese luna-solar calendar in the Tonda PF Xiali was also an eye opening rendition of time and date-keeping that we have long accepted as complex but executed with such readable elegance. On the lifestyle front, we reviewed a couple of laptops that are capable of pulling the double duty of work and play; we explored the metaverse and found the Pico 4 VR headset is a step in the right direction. Finally, hear from titans of industry like Frederic Arnault, the new CEO of TAG Heuer on what tech means in traditional watchmaking and Panerai CEO Alessandro Ficarelli about luxuries beyond what is worn on the wrist.

As we look forward, we look at the road taken and Breguet’s own modern legacy (p. 30), while casting an eye to the future with creations like the Hublot with rainbow-infused carbon case (p. 32) and Epic Timepieces (p. 34) as selected by the legendary Laurent Picciotto. Just in case the year is beginning a little rough, we have a guide to whisky (p. 44) and we are equipping you with the tools to keep life on track with the latest wearables from Montblanc and Apple in our Quantified Life series (p. 50).

December is a time of thoughtfulness and reflection. Reconsidering long-held bias is the duty of all gentlemen; we should take stock of our intellectual positions on everything: Take Hublot for example; are serious they serious watchmakers and in researching our cover star (p. 62), we discovered that indeed they are. in we spoke to model/singer Iman Fandi (p. 56) to hear her perspectives on what is “proper” masculinity. 

Even Dior has been getting in the swing of redefining couture for our time, blending Californian skate culture with fashion (p. 16). Prada and Loewe have been hard at work at redefining what we consider luxury as well (p. 54).

As we close, we should also count our blessings for the men and women, the Italian commandos I trained with during the Panerai Experience (p. 40) who stand at the fore keeping geopolitical barbarians at bay as members of NATO. CEO Jeremy Lim also spoke to us on the sacrifices of the generation before (p. 68) that made 50 years of Cortina possible. And what good is all that history, if we don’t honour it correctly? TAG Heuer Heritage Director Nicholas Biebuyck (p. 72) tells us. All this and our Christmas “Awesome” wish list (p. 90) to ease you into 2023.


With demand of popular watches outstripping supply, Patek Philippe has taken great pains to announce that “there’s no star” coinciding with the release of their new Nautilus (p. 34). Understanding that some timepieces have become commoditised, we talked to world renowned retailer-collector Laurent Picciotto about how he sold 95% of his collection and somehow ended up collecting only Bulgari Octo Finissimos (p. 88).

As Christmas appears on the horizon, even our thoughts turn to our better halves, that joy is unadulterated when it is shared and there are some choice Rolex models (p. 94) that can be enjoyed together.
We are also spending the last quarter of the year with eyes cast toward renewal with our Homme Improvement issue where we look at homes in addition to our mind, body and soul. Given that the majority of us spend our lives ensconced in ever smaller apartments, we study the Architecture of the Veil (p. 104) a design philosophy that hides magnificence. We speak to Jean-Michel Gathy to understand his visionary thinking (p. 108) and we also studied at the feet of interior designer Steve Leung, that ultimately good ambiance is all about the people (p. 112).

We have not forgotten our core remit, fashion, either – looking into voluminous layers and monumental ensembles that are unconventional yet stylish (p. 114), once your eyes have been satisfied, we have not one but two Michelin-starred restaurants for your attention as well, Nobu and Capella’s new Fiamma (p. 54 - 57). You can consider this issue your isotonic refreshment as we enter the final leg of 2022.

This tome kicks off Augustman’s inaugural exploration of “hype” with close to 30 pages on streetwear 
– from the latest sneakers (p. 26 to 35, p. 106 to 109) to totes and the latest runway-worthy ensembles (p. 114). The October issue is headlined by the King of Singaporean hype and Hip Hop himself, Yung Raja (p. 96).

Hype culture has also grown with the generation that was part of it. In the good old days, we were willing to make sacrifices to take home a hoodie or coveted pair of Jordans; now all “grown up” we are ready
to do the same for a watch. And we have a smorgasbord from p. 38 to 73 on everything: from the simple yet sophisticated Finissimo to the gorgeously larger-than-life overbuilt complications from Franck Muller. Suffice
it to say, Hype is now an all-encompassing movement that transcends the generations.

Everyone from your Gen Zs to Boomers is invited. I’m not kidding, the Oyster Perpetual Day-Date (p. 102), the most popular timepiece from my father’s era, is now considered “hype” – the more gold metal, the better. Welcome to the age of the Hautebeast.

Our cover star, Jaren Lewison (p. 90) is a bona-fide geek, having graduated Summa Cum Laude from the University of California in three years. His shot at superstardom came age 19 while he was playing the namesake thespian in Shakespeare In Love at the International Thespian Festival. When he got cast as super-nerd Ben Gross in the Netflix hit series Never Have I Ever mid-festival and they say, the rest is history. Proof in point that geeks do inherit the world.

Formula 1 racing is also an incredibly geeky sport as Rolex (p. 96) highlights the physics-defying nimbleness at the hands of the drivers and high-performance engines. Fashion too has become
a high stakes race as our Fall Winter 2022 trend report (p. 104) will show and our “Metamorphosis” fashion spread (p. 122) will demonstrate. The future looks pretty bright in watchmaking as well as classic hits are updated for the modern era – a Heuer Monaco (p. 50) in an unexpected purple,

In this MVMT special edition, Augustman was honoured to have seen how premier watchmaking brands in the world made their emblematic timepieces; We were invited to Jaeger LeCoultre’s Le Sentier facility and  Montblanc’s Villeret manufacture. We also got to speak to some of the leaders guiding some of the hottest brands today - Antoine Pin who heads Bulgari Watches, CEO Guido Terreni at Parmigiani who just launched a world premiere in the Tonda PF GMT Rattrapante and Christian Selmoni at Vacheron Constantin, the first brand in the industry to have two of the hottest integrated bracket watches in the segment.

Now more than ever, timepieces have become essential accessories for the budding fashionista as Idris Elba donning the Gucci 25H with the brightest colours of the season. Speaking of fashion, you will discover that cover star Louis Vuitton has elevated simple time indication into a high art - Spinning cubes instead of hands, in an exclusive interview, Head Watchmaker Michel Navas speaks to Augustman about the creation of a new icon, new complication and the future of the one of the world’s most distinctive shapes.


Asthetics is a core design principle that defines a design’s pleasing qualities. In visual terms, aesthetics includes factors such as balance, colour, movement, pattern, scale, shape and visual weight. Designers use aesthetics to complement their designs’ usability, and so enhance functionality. Every single brand within these pages espouses a philosophy not just for beauty but pleasure. Though stranger things have happened –  our Gen Z cover star Finn Wolfhard finds himself the world’s most recognisable 80s icon. The ’70s and ’80s resurgence is somehow accompanied with collaborations between Gucci and Adidas (p. 34) that have in-
turn partnered with Balenciaga. Even the TAG Heuer Carrera, a ’70s icon, finds itself newly re-imagined with diamonds set within a carbon fibre case! How avant garde (p. 52). Even the art of writing, once thought to be in decline in the age of What’s App, have seen a boost thanks to Montblanc Haus (p. 104).  Dior’s Kim Jones has also kept alive the dying art of embroidery, a technique now not only present in womenswear but also men’s (p. 20). Virgil Abloh too, finds his legacy preserved in the latest Air Force Ones from Louis Vuitton (p. 36).

Hard work and sacrifice yield fruits but it is necessary to acknowledge that the journey is more important than the destination. Life is about dealing with obstacles and to moving forward even when you can't see a favorable outcome. Brands like Lange pursued incremental perfection (p.98); Montblanc too didn't quite know where they were going with their High Artistry series until six years ago (p. 104). In 1929, the Patek Philippe Calatrava was a symbol of hope and resurgence and today, there's a new version (p. 42). Finally the Vacheron Constantin Ref. 222 wasn't the most popular of the integrated bracelet watches at the time but 2022, the 50th anniversary of the timepiece, sees the Historiques 222 one of the most sought after models in the genre. While it has only been a few months since the new year started, we’ve seen quite the changes. For starters, more international borders are opening up to vaccinated travellers. Despite the high density of billionaire brands, two French conglomerates own four of Italy’s billion-euro brands. Consider that Bulgari – the crown jewel of Italian jewellery, was acquired in March 2011 for
€3.7 billion, even more expensive than Tiffany & Co. The maker of the Bvlgari Octo is already a recipient of seven consecutive Grand Prix d’Horlogerie awards. Italians approach luxury uniquely in that beauty is made for beauty’s sake without consideration for scalability. Dolce&Gabbana; (our exclusive on p.108) earned €1.35 billion entirely on the basis that Italian luxury is rare, hand-made and exclusive. The Della Valle family, owners of Tod's, follows in the footsteps of the Medici family, funding the artisans who will painstakingly restore the Wonder of the World by hand (p.102) and it’s pretty much how it has been making its loafers since 1920. It is the Italian way that coined the very term “lifestyle”.


We live in an age where we have become particularly adept at innovating escapes for ourselves.
