On 28 March the Boris Eifman Ballet Theatre is performing its version of “Anna Karenina” at the Alexandrinsky Theatre. Tolstoy’s great novel is one of his most disputed and thematic works. It is difficult to imagine how such a complex work can be interpreted through the medium of dance, but Boris Eifman is one of those who are never afraid to experiment. His “Anna Karenina” to Tchaikovsky’s music was a revelation to many, and even severe and captious critics showered it with rapturous reviews. Boris Eifman decided to dispense with all the secondary themes in the novel: in his version Anna, Vronsky and Karenin are essentially the main characters. It centres, of course, on Anna, a married woman who has the misfortune to fall in love with an officer. Even after this unforeseen outrage the noble Karenin is prepared to forgive the woman he loves, but Anna is already beyond saving: the all-consuming passion destroys her and everyone connected with her life.
