CHALLENGED ANEW The Church has never been meant to be a ‘private club’ focused mainly on its own problems, plans and strategies. Rather, it looks outwardly and aims at being fully involved in the world and world matters, contributing, in its own unique way, to defend human dignity, foster peace, advocate justice, and permeate human experiences with the values of the Gospel. That is why the rich Social Doctrine of the Church does not aim at providing technical solutions to the social problems which can be better addressed by the social, political and economic sciences. Instead, it aims at enlightening the minds and hearts by applying the principles of the Gospel to concrete social problems. With the phenomenon of globalization, new social, technological and economic paradigms are taking shape and a profit-oriented market challenges, once more, the centrality of the human person and the core values of family, work, solidarity, etc. The Church is now challenged anew to explore deeper its Social Doctrine to shed the light of the Gospel upon the new complex social realities of today.
