The 25th Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of the Philippines, Lucas Bersamin, was appointed at a time of unusual political polarization. While it is hard to say that an organized political opposition exists, some elements did criticize his appointment, accusing Bersamin of being beholden to former President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo, during whose term he was appointed twice. Politics aside, this is a man who has risen through the ranks of the justice system, starting as a provincial lawyer.
