The NZ Rod&Rifle; team have carried out the most comprehensive review of suppressors ever undertaken in New Zealand. Thirty suppressors were tested comprising New Zealand made and imported brands with construction materials ranging from aluminium through to 3D printed titanium. They were tested in an anechoic chamber, to a strict test regime so there was no variation or bias in testing.
The test results don’t just give overall decibel reduction, but cost vs decibel reduction, weight vs decibel reduction, length past muzzle vs decibel reduction and diameter vs decibel reduction. The results will allow readers to determine what is best for their needs.

In this issue of NZ Rod&Rifle; we have some great hunting yarns this issue. James Morris has a story titled Stags ‘n’ Bulls where he takes a ripper bull tahr, his best ever along with a good red stag. For those who love Fiordland hunting, Adam McGrath tells a great tale about a group of tourist boat operators from Milford Sound and their 2017 roar success. True big trophy DOC land fallow bucks are very hard to come by but after years of searching Anto Hall takes a monster.
We have had a lot of positive feedback on the Editor's custom .300WSM rifle build, so we have started an exciting new project. Based on a Tikka T3, we will be adding some cool components then looking at different stock and magazine options not to mention calibre choices. In this issue we have fitted a Nightforce NSX 3.5-15 x 50 scope, a Kalix Teknik adjustable check piece and an Atlasworx extended bolt handle and shroud.

With the roar now a distant memory and duck season done and dusted, this time of year can be pretty hard hunting - unless you’re chasing tahr and chamois in the Alps. The trophy potential for tahr at present has never been better: the old benchmark of 12 inches is long gone; 13 inches has become the new mark to aim for. I recently heard of DOC running a tahr search-and-destroy mission which took a 15½ inch bull some 80km north of the so-called allowable limit for the herd! 
Heads of this size are certainly becoming more common. As Mike McClunie’s article in our last issue highlighted, the big bulls are often likely to be hanging out in thick alpine scrub to avoid the heli-hunters - so it requires a change in tactics by us hunters. Willis Macbeth offers some sound advice in his Hunting through the Seasons article in this issue which concentrates on hunting the winter months, July and August.
