The Covid-19 pandemic and the lingering effect of the Ukraine war have left major world economies scrambling for economic refuge. Major African economies are now retooling and seeking ways to manage the increasing cost of basic goods and services. The increasing and unmanageable debt problems have become a cause for alarm.

According to Mr Elhiraika of the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa, "The COVID-19 pandemic and the Russia-Ukraine war have negatively affected the fiscal performance of African countries, where the debt-to-GDP ratio has increased from 57% in 2019 and by 2021 it was to 66% in 2022.”

Hence, the financial stability risks of major countries in Africa have increased rapidly over the last few years; as higher inflation numbers, political and fragmentation risks pose a key threat. Despite these emerging risks and conditions of instability across the continent, we remain a "prisoner of hope" for a better future for Africa. 

In contrast to these prevailing conditions, the continent of Africa has not faltered in breeding bright minds that see opportunities in the ailing economic outlook. Contained within the pages of this edition of Business Elites Africa titled "The Making of Africa's Finance Masters" are profiles of Africa's finest.

Hello and welcome to this October edition of Business Elites Africa! In this issue, "Who is Who in Africa's Most Powerful Law Firms," we take a quick dive into the lives, industry genius and entrepreneurial journeys of Africa's most influential legal minds and advocates.

The legal profession in the continent of Africa has evolved tremendously. From the years of colonial domination, to the post-independence years when the likes of Sir Adeyemo Alakija, Akintola Williams; Hauwa Ibrahim and their contemporaries across Africa, showed the world that Africa was a force to reckon with, not only in sports and wars, but also in building and managing complex legal structures, promoting the rule of law, as well as disseminating specialised legal knowledge and skill sets, exceptional advocacy and arbitrations prowess in the core practice of common law and international law.

The global fashion industry is currently estimated at $1.8 trillion, with Africa's textile and clothing markets grossing a little over $36 billion.  According to the AFDB report, Africa currently accounts for 1.9% of the global fashion industry.  These poor statistics clearly elevate the question, “How does Africa take a key position in the global fashion industry?” Through the Cultural Fashion movement, opportunities abound for African fashion Elites to successfully compete in a global market for fashion. 

The geometric increase in demand for African designs, styles, textiles, and garments is beyond the continent. Currently, in sub-Saharan Africa, the combined apparel and footwear market capacity is estimated at USD 31 billion. Fashion is a fundamental part of everyday life and a vital sector in the global economy.  

Today’s biggest textile-producing countries are China and India. However, “made in Africa” is gaining traction globally. The restraint and goodwill of the Biafran nation in the colonial experiment called Nigeria, has been shown through the decades. Our no-holds-bared contribution to nation-building, social integration and the assimilation of our sons and daughters into various other cultures, is second to none.
