Augustman has reached out to a handful few for more insights into their individual metiers ranging from the art of journalling and leather craft to pottery, pen-making, calligraphy and so forth, bringing you a more holistic view of the importance of making the most of human artistry in everyday life. 

Taking center stage on the cover of Augustman in May 2023 is indie singer-songwriter and a central figure in the country’s open-mic circuit, not to mention an Augustman Men of the Year laureate - the frontman of The Frankie Sixes, Reza Salleh. In our exclusive catch-up with Reza, the talented artist brings us up to date on his off-the-beaten-path evolution over the past decade, from folk and pop rock to swing jazz, to the official release of the band’s eponymous debut album this month.

Best known in “Singapore, JB and some say Batam” for her role in Phua Chu Kang Ltd Pte as well as for her contribution in theatre and culture across both sides of the causeway, the award-winning actress has been making headway internationally over the years with roles in Crazy Rich Asians, The Garden of Evening Mists, the original Netflix series Marco Polo, and The CW’s modern adaptation of the 1970s’ American martial arts action-adventure series Kung Fu. In her exclusive cover story for Augustman Malaysia, Kheng Hua shares about her journey from Singapore and Malaysia to Hollywood and the world over, and her positive attitude and independent spirit. With the Lunar New Year celebrations stretching for 15 days all the way into the month of February, Augustman Malaysia dedicates this issue to the Spring Festival and Chinese culture. Headlining February’s features is a special photo editorial that gives us a glimpse of the history of the Chinese diaspora in the UK and how the modern generation celebrates Chinese New Year in the capital city of London, through the lens of UK-based photographer Aisha Nazar. We follow this up with a visual piece by Annice Lyn capturing the perseverance of the lion dance industry in Malaysia. In keeping with the theme, Daniel Goh took it upon themselves to rediscover traditional Chinese New Year staples and family businesses that have stood the test of time and have been reinvigorated by their descendants for the generations to come. 

In anticipation of the upcoming theatrical release of the supernatural horror film Pulau, Augustman presents the film’s executive producer and F&B entrepreneur Michael Helfman of Mickey’s Original New York Pizza fame, who shares about his sophomore feature film and his return to filmmaking after 10 years, in this February’s exclusive cover story.

The January issue has always proved to be challenging yet exciting, with all the long holidays and early-closing that stretch from Christmas to New Year’s Day, to Chinese New Year. As we brace ourselves for the year ahead, we realised that in times of uncertainty, the best way forward is to sometimes just take step back and learn from the past.

Augustman brings you a dedicated feature that illustrates its latest expressions spanning bespoke sartorial fashion, auto-detailing, sur masure fragrances and luxury yachts, all of which are meticulously designed with self-discovery, individuality, exclusivity, craftsmanship and personal touches in mind. In keeping with tradition, we dedicate our March issue to the celebration of International Women’s Day. This year we have reached out to a group of fellow gentlemen who are actively doing their part in supporting women empowerment and integrity, in hopes of inspiring other men to do the same in their own way. Speaking of empowerment, we had the pleasure of interviewing our latest cover star and face of Onitsuka Tiger, Hael Husaini, who continues to challenge conventional notions and develop his own distinctive style. Leading this issue’s cover are the creators and brains behind Fiziwoo, Hafizi Radzi Woo and Izree Kai Haffiz. Born colour blind, Hafizi did not let his decreased ability limit his passion for fashion; together with his good friend and business partner Kai, he has successfully turned out a legitimate homegrown fashion house. Officially celebrating its 10th anniversary this year, Fiziwoo presented their latest men’s and women’s collections in November at the 2021 KL Fashion Week and is slated for a further expansion in 2022. To warp up the year on a positive note, we dedicate our Men of the Year 2021 awards to a group of courageous individuals who have risen above the tumultuous storm of the pandemic and made a difference in various ways. 

In addition to our main magazine, we launch our entrepreneur supplement with a lifestyle twist, Leading Force. This issue, we have compiled a collection of our first-hand interviews and features on various entrepreneurs, creatives and startups from the past two years to serve as a guide for future generations to have a glimpse of what some of today’s enterprising individuals have experienced during this important moment in time. For those who seek guidance, or better understanding of the topic, our writer Melissa Foong has also taken the initiative to reach out to an expert, Professor Dato’ Dr Andrew Mohanraj, president of the Malaysian Mental Health Association, for a comprehensive interview. And fronting our cover for the second time is Remy Ishak, we took the first opportunity to check in with the acclaimed actor, asking him to share about his personal reflections on navigating the pandemic and the journey ahead.

As people become more aware of the emergency and the impact of their day-to-day actions cause to the environment, our September 2021 issue highlights a group of passionate Malaysians who have emerged with business models and products dedicated to ethical and sustainable practices, led by our cover star, actor Lawrence Wong, who recently ushered in the latest “holy grail” in skin care with his own brand of botanical and sustainably-sourced products. As Malaysia enters its 64th anniversary of independence this year, we couldn’t help but wonder if the term Merdeka holds the same meaning and values for different generations of our society. This month, in celebration of our National Day, we’ve reached out to a few prominent families and household names, asking the respective elders and scions to each share with us what Merdeka means to them as well as the important personal memories, lessons, values and traditions that they wish to carry forward. In keeping with the Merdeka spirit, we are pleased to have one of Malaysia’s foremost designers, Dato’ Rizalman Ibrahim, leading our Merdeka celebration this month. Having presented his final collection last year following three decades of continued success, Rizalman speaks with Augustman about his decision to retire and current focus on being a driving force behind the next generation of fashion designers. We thank His Royal Highness of Fashion for personally directing his own photo shoot at his private residence and gracing our cover story with his exclusive self-portraits.

After a year long postponement of the Olympics, the games are set to kick off in late July. It is in this spirit that we promote in our June/July 2021 issue up-and-coming sports and performing arts in Malaysia, namely dragon boat racing, Brazilian Jiujitsu, ballet, Kendo and e-sports, in hopes that they will gain wider recognition, support and participation, and, perhaps, make it to the Olympics one day. In celebration of Father’s Day 2021, we speak to young and happening men who are embracing parenthood in style. Find out how they are tackling the most important role in life in our Expose section. Speaking of important roles, our leading star this month is a man who has ignited and fuelled many social movements with his artwork, most notably the Obama Hope poster. He is none other than esteemed artist/activist Shepard Fairey, one of the most influential political artists of his generation. COVID-19 has dealt humankind the hardest blow. At the same time, it has presented what seemed to be a period of relief and recovery for the environment. A significant drop in human activities due to movement restrictions made the air noticeably clearer and our surroundings, both in urban and suburban areas. We have decided to highlight these phenomena in our April issue, in celebration of World Earth Day. The special report is accompanied by two photo stories, thanks to the contribution of documentary photographer Annice Lyn and conservation photographer Mahesh Kulkarni, which bring to light issues of human-wildlife conflict and the negative impact on animals and indigenous communities as a result of human activities and the transformation of land use. At the same time, we’ve looked to filmmaker Zack Snyder for inspiration on redemption and perseverance. In seeing his vision through and restoring Justice League to its rightful glory with his epic “Snyder cut”, the man has turned into a real-life hero to one of comic history’s most important superhero teams.

In Celebration of International Women’s Day 2021, August Man Malaysia is pleased to dedicate a very special feature in our March issue to Malaysian women who have made an impact on art. At the same time, we are also proud to have award-winning stand-up comedian, Nigel Ng front our cover. As soon as the news of Nigel’s return to Malaysia broke, we took the opportunity to reach out to the fried rice-savant and to celebrate his success story behind Uncle Roger and adapting to his overnight fame.

In an unprecedented year filled with trials and tribulations, August Man Malaysia, in partnership with TAG Heuer and Volvo Malaysia, has decided to revise its established line up of awards for the 2020 edition of Men of the Year and instead present the #MadeInMY Awards, in recognition of a group of exceptional individuals who have each dedicated their craft, knowledge and creativity to the preservation, promotion and sustainability of different aspects of our country’s rich and diverse culture and heritage. Inspired by the patriotic initiative of the KL20X20 Photography Project by the KL-Ga collective in mobilising our community of artistic photographers during these difficult times to capture all “the rough and the smooth” in our capital city and present an epic series of evocative photo-stories of how far we’ve come and what makes Kuala Lumpur one of the most vibrant cities and societies that we are in 2020, we dedicate our October issue to their mammoth undertaking as well as the art of photography.
During their 10 days of exhibitions in September, we had the pleasure of catching up with some of the exhibiting photographers for some insight into their work. Their stories are published in our Features section this month for your perusal. Recognising the important role of photography in telling and memorialising the stories of the world, we also roped in our associate publisher and veteran journalist Rubin Khoo and approached the organisers of KL20X20 for an opportunity to present a workshop on photojournalism and how photographers can contribute to lifestyle media and help push the limits of editorial content. Last but not least, in collaboration with Bvlgari Malaysia, we are proud to present you with our October cover star, actor, singer and August Man’s Men of the Year 2019 — Style award- winner Alvin Chong who has both taken his career to the next level and social media by storm with his latest single release.

This month, in commemoration of the establishment of the Malaysian federation in 1963, August Man has taken a more diverse and inclusive approach to celebrating Malaysia Day by collaborating with fashion revolutionary Azreezal Hafidz, conceptual photographer Daniel Adams and LifeWear brand Uniqlo, and presenting the latest generation of Malaysians who are embracing their differences and unique sense of self, and redefining our national identity. At the same time, we are proud to have our national and Olympic sailor Khairulnizam Afendy on our cover, dressed in Rado’s Captain Cook timepiece and Bottega Veneta, Khairulnizam talks about his continued preparation for the Olympics, despite the competition’s postponement to 2021. His cover is complemented by another featuring K-pop sensation Jackson Wang, star of Cartier’s new and diverse “Pasha Community” campaign.

In celebration of Merdeka, we dedicate our August issue to a modern generation of Malaysians who have each embraced multiculturalism to stellar heights by mastering an artistic tradition of another local ethnic group, once and for all bridging the gap between heritage and modernity, and our cultural differences.
At the same time, we are also proud to have lawyer- turned-award-winning-writer Tan Twan Eng front our cover. With two acclaimed historical fictions and a film adaptation depicting the lingering trauma and personal conflicts resulted from war, Twan Eng has inspired us to rise above our differences and see both sides, and make peace with the past.

While many continue to struggle with the challenges of current times, many are taking it all in their stride and turning uncertainty into opportunity. A fine example among the latter group is extreme adventurer Mike Horn. Speaking to Mercedes-Benz about his personal experience of self-isolation and uncertainty. In regard to positive change, we’ve also looked to the Swiss watch industry for inspiration. Despite the cancellation of both of its world trade shows, namely Watches & Wonders and Baselworld, many participating brands have undertaken innovative online strategies for their new releases, complete with virtual experiences. For those who yearn nothing more than to just break free, HBO has brought us the perfect source of escapism in the form of its genre-bending romcom-thriller series, starring Domhnall Gleeson. In our cover story, the Irish actor elaborates on the crossover appeal of the show and his role.

Working with graffiti artist Kenji Chai, we present you with a special cover art depicting how the Covid-19 pandemic has reshaped our take on life with a whole new outlook. The cover art is accompanied by a special feature where we have looked to our Men of the Year for their personal reflections.
