One person who would know about self-expression well is none-other-than our cover star, Lisha Ho. “I see myself aligning with the ever-changing nature of fashion. Just as fashion transforms over time, I too embrace a constant process of exploration, learning and pushing my boundaries. “Instead of delving too deep into how rap music is changing, I’d like to say that the musical landscape for all artists has expanded. From my perspective, various rappers are using rap as a musical tool or device, blending it with a wide range of elements to transform their music… If I had to pick a struggle [I’ve so far encountered in my young career], I think the fact that I had to participate in a survival show before I could truly develop my self-identity as an artist, leaving some room to be desired in terms of how I was telling my story, since I was getting constant feedback and being judged,” said South Korean rapper and the L’Officiel cover girl Lee Youngji during our interview. 

In the creative realm, originality necessitates a desire to venture into uncharted territory, challenge the status quo, and push the edge. It’s a personal commitment to be innovative that allows her voice to be heard loud and clear, commanding attention and evoking astonishment. And Lee is one of those people. The Coach newest global ambassador further added, “I think the slogan “Courage To Be Real” is the reason why I’m collaborating with Coach. It reflects the brand’s desire for a confident and self-assured ambassador who is unafraid to express themselves. And since I’m someone who is not afraid to reveal myself, Coach probably saw me in that light. This year’s June/July 2022 line-up is no less exciting, being a brand-centric one that explores the emblems and signatures of luxury maisons in all their forms and functions. The cover story features Singaporean beauty entrepreneur, Kim Lim, who is pretty much a force to be reckoned with not only in the way she has designed and built her business ventures, but also for her personal style and pursuits. Shining the spotlight on the close connection between fashion and pop culture—fuelled by the most influential fashion personalities now hailing from cinema, music, TV and social media—Ready To Wear (Again) highlights the revival of ’90s and aughts fashion, made popular once again by the street style of Gen Z celebs and influencers. Elsewhere, Hollywood glam and ‘80s sophistication rise to a high in Sunset Boulevard and New Radical respectively. The dominant hip-hop culture and its love for the extravagant sparkle of iced out wristwatches and jewellery is showcased to perfection in The Bling Ring. Meanwhile, Squad Game identifies the main pop girls who are making celebrity endorsement great again in the world of luxury jewellery. From celebrity to art, Factory Girl takes on a stunningly graphic Pop Art sensibility that would make Andy Warhol proud. Don’t Look Back rounds things up with a lesson in pop culture through the revealing and enlightening tales behind the scenes in the music, fashion and art worlds.

For the April 2022 issue, L’Officiel Malaysia goes with the flow with a “Human Nature” theme to highlight the inseparable co-existence between humans and nature. Indulging the creativity of our inner child, Pretty Natural challenges conventional ideas of beauty with the imperfect use of colour and cosmetic paints. Finally, Hometown Glory shines the spotlight on the nation’s most breathtaking ecotourism locales that have the rest of the world green with envy.

The month of March truly augurs well as we celebrate the International Women’s Day, where tributes pour in to mark the many endeavours and exploits of women all around the world. L’Officiel Malaysia also pays a fitting homage to women in fashion for the March 2022 issue with a cover story inspired by women behind the scenes. It features Malaysian model Janice Low, dressed in Dior, starring as a vision of both feminine strength and beauty. L’Officiel Malaysia concludes 2021 with a rejuvenating “Hope & Rebirth” theme to carry us triumphantly into 2022. Fronting the last cover of the year and evoking a natural vision of new beginnings is local supermodel Tuti Noor, dressed in Bottega Veneta and Van Cleef & Arpels. Bright Young Things kicks things off with six new-gen Asian design talents blazing a trail towards the future of fashion. Just in time for the year end is our curation of fashionable gifts listed in Holiday Cheer. Shining the light in jewellery design is Where Do We Go Now? where a new wave of exciting hires is generating buzz everywhere. To signify the trending theme of green-hued watches is Born For Glory, conceived against a backdrop of new life and abundance. Solar Eclipse is a beauty story that inspires us to venture into the light, bathed in the sultry shimmer of golden flecks and bronze washes. Finally, to herald a new era of travel, Easy Does It highlights the art of self-care with a shortlist of curative, soul-nourishing programmes we should all be signing up for in 2022.

The L’Officiel Malaysia November 2021 issue revives the “Indie Spirit” to give a much-needed boost to our current state of mind and energy. Japanese ingénue Natsumi Sekine is the perfect protagonist to front the cover, emanating a powerful vision in the gentlest designs paired with Cartier’s iconic jewellery. Independent practitioners are thriving and in Indie Darlings, we bring you on a round-the-world shopping trip to the coolest independent fashion stores. Closer to home, National Treasure introduces the young and vibrant generation who is shaking things up and spearheading the demi-fine movement in the jewellery industry. Concurrently, luxury watchmaking’s Free To Be Happy mantra infuses liberation as it explores visual concepts and colours that appeal to the free-spirited. Creativity knows no bounds in Come As You Are with a rare brand of avant-garde and fantastical beauty. Meet Gen Z-er Zamaera, who inspires in taking the male-dominated local rap scene by storm and navigating the music industry as an indie artist. Our May 2021 “Rule-breaker” issue brings much excitement and provocation with a myriad of stories, textual and visual, that express the many visions and attitudes that break with convention in and out of the world of luxury.
