China’s population grows to 1.41 billion China’s population has grown at its slowest pace in decades. The average annual growth rate was 0.53% over the past 10 years, down from a rate of 0.57% between 2000 and 2010, bringing the population to 1.41 billion. The pool of potential workers aged 15 to 59 shrank to 894 million. China conducts a census every ten years to determine population growth, movement patterns and other trends. The sensitive data plays a major role in government policy planning. Beijing had changed family planning rules in 2016 to allow families to have two children as fears grew about China’s fast-ageing population and shrinking workforce.
