Vodafone names new chairman
The Vodafone Group has named Heineken CEO Jean-Francois Van Boxmeer as its new chairman. He will succeed Gerard Kleisterlee and take over the new role from November. Van Boxmeer will handover his role as CEO of Heineken to the company’s Asia-Pacific chief, Dolf van den Brink, in June. Heineken’s shares have risen three-fold during Van Boxmeer’s 15-year tenure as CEO.

Pfizer vaccine found 94% effective in first big real-world test
The first big real-world study of the Pfizer/BioNTech vaccine to be independently reviewed shows the shot is highly effective at preventing Covid-19, in a potentially landmark moment for countries desperate to end lockdowns and reopen economies. Up until now, most data on the efficacy of Covid-19 vaccines has come under controlled conditions in clinical trials, leaving an element of uncertainty over how results would translate into the real world with its unpredictable variables. The research in Israel - two months into one of the world’s fastest rollouts, providing a rich source of data - showed two doses of the Pfizer shot cut symptomatic Covid-19 cases by 94 per cent across all age groups, and severe illnesses by nearly as much.

5 Indian-origin persons feature in TIME magazine’s list
Five Indian-origin personalities, including Twitter’s top lawyer Vijaya Gadde and UK’s finance minister Rishi Sunak, and an Indian activist have featured in TIME magazine’s annual list of 100 “emerging leaders who are shaping the future”. Other Indian-origin personalities on the list are Instacart founder and CEO Apoorva Mehta, doctor and Executive Director of nonprofit Get Us PPE Shikha Gupta and founder of nonprofit Upsolve Rohan Pavuluri. Bhim Army chief Chandra Shekhar Aazad is also on the list.

UAE launches historic first mission to Mars
The United Arab Emirates is celebrating its first mission to Mars. It has put a probe called Hope in orbit around the planet, making it only the fifth spacefaring entity to do so after the US, the Soviet Union, Europe and India. The spacecraft, which left Earth seven months ago, had to make a braking manoeuvre to be sure of being captured by Mars’ gravity. Hope is the UAE Space Agency’s first major mission. It aims to orbit the red planet for a full Martian year (about two Earth years) and create a comprehensive map of the planet’s climate.The mission team includes 150 Emirati engineers and 200 engineers and scientists. The Hope probe is built from aluminum in a honeycomb structure with a composite face-sheet. With a mass of 1,350 kg including the propellant, the overall size and dimensions of the probe is comparable to a small car.

The Best Actor nominees in Motion Picture (Drama) at Golden Globes 2021 include Riz Ahmed, Chadwick Boseman, Anthony Hopkins, Gary Oldman and Tahar Rahim. Moreover, Sacha Baron Cohen, James Corden, Lin-Manuel Miranda, Dev Patel and Andy Samberg have been nominated in the Motion Picture (Musical/Comedy) category. Cohen has also been nominated in Best Supporting Actor (Motion Picture) category. The nominees for Best Actress (Drama) at the 78th Golden Globes include Viola Davis, Andra Day, Vanessa Kirby, Frances McDormand and Carey Mulligan. Actresses who’ve been nominated in the Musical/Comedy category are Maria Bakalova, Kate Hudson, Michelle Pfeiffer, Rosamund Pike and Anya Taylor-Joy. It’ll be held on February 28, 2021, and will be hosted by Tina Fey and Amy Poehler.

Lt Gen Chandi Prasad Mohanty to take over as new Army Vice-Chief 
Lieutenant General Chandi Prasad Mohanty will assume the charge of the next Army Vice-Chief on February 1. The 1982-batch officer from the Rajput Regiment, who is presently the Southern Army Commander, will succeed Lieutenant General SK Saini on his superannuation. Lieutenant General Mohanty has vast operational, logistics and administrative experience in varied command and staff appointments. Lieutenant General Mohanty has served across a wide spectrum of terrain and conflicts, along the fronts with both Pakistan and China. He has also been a part of the counter-terror operations in the Northeast and Jammu and Kashmir.

Joe Biden becomes the 46th President of the United States
Biden, 78, has become the oldest US president in history, ending one of the most dramatic political transitions in American history. He was sworn in at a scaled-back ceremony in Washington due to coronavirus and  security concerns following the January 6 assault on the US Capitol by Trump supporters. Creating history, Kamala Harris, the daughter of immigrants from Jamaica and India, has become the first Black person, first woman, and first Asian American to serve as vice president. Donald Trump is the first president who did not attend his successor’s inauguration since 1869.

Donald Trump has become the first President in US history to be impeached twice as the Democratic-controlled House of Representatives formally charged him with “incitement of insurrection”. Ten Republicans joined Democrats to impeach Trump by 232-197. He will now face a trial in the Senate, where if convicted he could face being barred from ever holding public office again.

Amazon overtakes Boeing as Washington state’s largest private employer 
Amazon has become Washington state’s largest private employer, overtaking airplane manufacturer Boeing. Amazon has added 16,500 Washington-based jobs, bringing its total to 80,000 in the state. In comparison, Boeing has ended 2020 with 58,800 employees, an 18% reduction since the start of 2020. Boeing has reportedly also been the state’s largest employer post-World War II.

India to play vital role in equitable distribution of COVID-19 vaccines 
With vaccine rollout beginning in some countries, the world ravaged by the COVID-19 pandemic is looking to India for the large-scale production and supply of coronavirus vaccines as it enters 2021. As the pandemic hit the world in 2020, Indian pharma industry rose to the occasion and was able to manufacture and maintain supply chains even during the lockout period, and exported medicines such as HCQ and paracetamol to more than 150 countries, keeping its image of ‘’Reliable Pharmacy of the World’’. The world is again looking at India as a beacon of hope to manufacture and supply the huge number of vaccines needed to tackle the pandemic.

The world’s highest-paid YouTubers of 2020  
For years, it’s been clear that YouTube can be a major money-maker for its stars. 2020, however, brought a new level of riches to its top personalities. Forbes estimated that the platform’s celebrities brought in over $200 million from June 1, 2019 to June 1, 2020, representing a 30% jump from the previous year. Nine-year-old toy reviewer Ryan Kaji, who made 217 crore in a year from his channel, retained the title of world’s highest-paid YouTuber. He is followed by newcomer MrBeast (Jimmy Donaldson) with 177 crore earnings and sports-entertainment group Dude Perfect at 169 crore. Rhett and Link were placed fourth (147 crore) and Markiplier was ranked fifth (144 crore).

Boris Johnson Will Be Republic Day Chief Guest
Prime Minister Boris Johnson has accepted India’s invitation to be the chief guest at Republic Day on January 26 – the second UK prime minister to attend the event after John Major in 1993 – and has invited India to join the UK’s G7 summit next year.Johnson will travel to India in January 2021 to strengthen a key strategic relationship which supports jobs and investment across the UK as part of his first major bilateral visit since taking office, and the first since the UK’s departure from the EU. The UK and India are significant investors and markets for each other’s economies and our growing trade and investment relationship is worth around £24 billion a year, supporting more than half a million jobs.

The second nation to plant flag on the Moon
China has made history in becoming only the second country to plant a flag on the surface of the moon, with help from the Chang’e 5 lander.
After the United States and Russia, China would be the third nation to bring rocks back from the Moon. The flag, representing China, is 2 m wide and 90 cm tall.The Chinese lunar mission is a complex one as it consists  of four main spacecraft that will work together to bring between 2 to 4 kilograms of lunar dirt back to Earth. You might be wondering why the need arose to send another lunar mission when man had already stepped on the Moon in 1969. The US planted the first flag on the Moon during the manned Apollo 11 mission in 1969. Five further US flags were planted on the lunar surface during subsequent missions up until 1972.

US maintains ban on phone calls during flights
The Federal Communications Commission has killed a proposal to allow in-flight voice calls via mobile phones, ending its examination of an idea that provoked fears of air rage from passengers trapped beside jabbering seat mates. The FCC in 2013 had  proposed allowing mobile telephone conversations above 10,000 feet, adopting practices followed in Europe and elsewhere, where in-flight voice calling is more common, but the proposal led to strong and immediate pushback. Restrictions on in-flight calling were put in place to prevent interference with flight controls, radios and navigation equipment.

16-yr-old US girl becomes the world’s first to hit 100 mn followers on TikTok
America’s 16-year-old dancer Charli D’Amelio has become the world’s first person to hit 10 crore or 100 million followers on TikTok. Charli, the world’s most-followed person on TikTok, started posting on TikTok in May 2019. She now has more than twice the number of TikTok followers as actor Will Smith and three times the number of followers as Dwayne Johnson.

Musk  becomes the world’s 3rd richest
Billionaire and SpaceX Founder Elon Musk is all set to become the third-richest person in the world, surpassing Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg. Musk’s wealth has jumped $90 billion this year, the biggest gain on the ranking of the world’s 500 richest people. Amazon Chief Jeff Bezos has been one of the biggest wealth gainers in 2020, with company stock gaining a staggering 86 percent since the start of the year. Bezos is followed by Bill Gates, whose net worth has reached $124 billion.

Joe Biden wins US election
Joe Biden has been elected the 46th president of the United States, achieving a decades-long political ambition and denying Donald Trump a second term after a deeply divisive presidency defined by a once-in-a-century pandemic, economic turmoil and social unrest. Trump is the first incumbent to lose re-election since 1992, when Bill Clinton defeated George HW Bush. With a turnout projected to reach its highest point in a century despite the pandemic, a fearful and anxious nation elected a candidate who promised to govern not as a Democrat but as an “American president” and vowed to be a unifying force after four years of upheaval.

Biden breaks Obama’s record for most votes for any US presidential candidate
Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden has received the most votes for any presidential candidate in US history. With more than 72 million votes so far, Biden has broken the record previously set by former President Barack Obama, who received about 69.5 million votes in 2008. Votes for Biden represented 50.4% of the total number of votes counted so far. When Trump lost the popular vote but won the Electoral College four years ago, he amassed 62,984,828 votes or 46.09 percent of those cast. Former Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton, meanwhile, amassed 65,853,514 votes, which was 48.18 percent of the popular vote.

Instagram & Facebook Messenger’s Cross-Messaging Introduced in India
Facebook  Messenger  is getting a visual update and a number of new features, including support for chat themes, custom reactions and, soon, selfie stickers and vanish mode. The changes are a part of Facebook’s overhauled messaging platform, announced in late September, which introduced the ability for Instagram users to communicate with people on Facebook for the first time. The integration also brings 10 features, that were previously exclusive to Facebook Messenger, to the Instagram app. Messenger users won’t need to take action to gain the new feature set either. These will also be rolled out to users automatically, as they become available in the user’s region.

Who is ahead - Trump or Biden?
The 2020 United States presidential election is scheduled for Tuesday, November 3, 2020. It will be the 59th quadrennial presidential election. Voters will select presidential electors either giving Mr Trump another four years or handing over the keys to the White House to Mr Biden who in turn will vote on December 14, 2020, to either elect a new president and vice president or re-elect the incumbents Donald Trump and Mike Pence respectively. The Republican president is being challenged by Democratic Party nominee Joe Biden, who is best known as Barack Obama’s vice-president but has been in US politics since the 1970s. As election day approaches, polling companies will be trying to gauge the mood of the nation by asking voters which candidate they prefer.

Japan to release contaminated water into sea
Japan is planning to release treated radioactive water from the destroyed Fukushima nuclear plant into the sea. 
It follows years of debate over how to dispose of the liquid, which includes water used to cool the power station hit by a massive tsunami in 2011.
Environmental and fishing groups oppose the idea but many scientists say the risk it would pose is low. The water would be diluted inside the plant before release so it is 40 times less concentrated, with the whole process taking 30 years.

US judge blocks Trump administration’s ban on new TikTok 
TikTok has avoided a government-ordered block on new downloads in the US after a judge issued a temporary injunction. TikTok had argued that forcing it off the iOS and Android app shops would have violated the First and 5th Amendments of America charter. TikTok has said it has more than 100 million active users in the US and about 700 million worldwide. It has claimed even a temporary ban would threaten its business. The US government has issued two executive orders targeting TikTok. While the first is designed to prevent it being distributed via Apple and Google, the second is more far-reaching. Due to come into force on 12 November, it is designed to shut the app down outright in the US, if the president’s national security concerns are not resolved.

Microsoft buys Fallout creator Bethesda for $7.5bn
Xbox-owner Microsoft has acquired the games company behind blockbuster titles including Doom, Fallout, Skyrim and Wolfenstein. It is paying $7.5bn (£5.85bn) for Bethesda’s parent ZeniMax Media. Xbox has said that the publisher’s franchises would be added to its Game Pass subscription package for consoles and PCs. This could help make the forthcoming Xbox Series X more attractive than the PlayStation 5 to some players. Both machines are due to launch in November. Game Pass already gives players access to more than 200 games. Microsoft includes first-party titles at point of launch to those signed up to its “ultimate” package without further cost. Microsoft Corporation is an American multinational technology company with headquarters in Redmond, Washington. It develops, manufactures, licenses, supports, and sells computer software, consumer electronics, personal computers, and related services.

Yoshihide Suga Becomes Japan’s Prime Minister
Yoshihide Suga has become Japan’s first new prime minister in almost eight years, replacing the country’s longest-serving premier, Shinzo Abe, who stepped down citing health concerns. Suga, 71, was sworn in by Emperor Naruhito at the Imperial Palace after parliament elected him as prime minister. He pledges to forge ahead with his predecessor’s key policies, including his efforts to jump-start the economy and to revise Japan’s postwar constitution, which restricts the use of its military. Mr. Suga has said kickstarting the economy will be a top priority, along with containing the virus- essential if the postponed Tokyo 2020 Olympics are to open as planned in July 2021.

Reliance becomes 1st Indian firm to cross $200 bn in market value 
Asia’s richest man Mukesh Ambani’s Reliance Industries has become the first listed Indian company to cross $200 billion in market capitalisation. Shares of the oil-to-telecom conglomerate surged over 8% to a record high after Bloomberg reported that it’s offering to sell a $20 billion stake in Reliance Retail to Amazon. India’s second-most valuable company TCS is worth $119 billion.

Jeff Bezos becomes the first person on Earth to be worth more than $200 billion
Bezos isn’t just the wealthiest man but the only person to have that amount of money in modern history. His wealth is nearly double that of the world’s second-richest person and Microsoft founder Bill Gates. 56-year old Bezos is the founder, CEO, and president of Amazon — a multinational company that focuses on a range of businesses from e-commerce to cloud computing and artificial intelligence. Amazon’s share price has surged by 80% since the beginning of the year. People are shopping online now more than ever — filling the deep pockets of both Amazon and Bezos. According to Forbes, Bezos has earned $86 billion of his wealth in the last 12 months. He was worth $114 billion until September last year. Experts say Bezos is on his path to become the world’s first trillionaire by 2026.

Apple to open a ‘floating’ store in Singapore
As the coronavirus forces other retailers to close down, Apple has announced that it is planning to open a new Apple Store in Singapore that appears to float on the water.   It will be named Apple Marina Bay Sands after the hotel complex. The store is replacing a shard-shaped Crystal Pavilion that once housed a nightclub called Avalon. Apple has rebuilt the structure with glass panels that will reflect Singapore’s skyline during the day and will reportedly ‘glow like a lantern’ in the night.

Kamala Harris scripts history as she accepts Democratic Party’s nomination for US vice-president
Senator Kamala Harris has accepted the Democratic Party’s nomination to be the vice president of the United States, scripting history by becoming the first Indian-American and also the first Black woman to be on a major political party’s national ticket. She has been nominated as the vice-presidential candidate at the virtual Democratic National Convention. She is also the first female African-American to become California’s attorney general. In 2017, she became the second African-American woman to join the Senate, winning the California seat vacated by Senator Barbara Boxer.
If elected in the November 3 presidential elections, Harris, whose mother is from India and father from Jamaica, would be the first-ever women vice president of the United States.

Facebook allows work from home till July 2021
Facebook employees have been allowed to work from home till July 2021, due to the coronavirus pandemic. The social media company will also be giving employees $1,000 to cover home office needs. The company will reopen offices in a restricted capacity where government guidance permits and where virus mitigation has taken place for about two months.

War over TikTok worsens
China’s state-run media has struck back in the war over TikTok, branding U.S. demands for the sale of the social media app’s American operations to Microsoft Corp. as “theft” and suggesting Beijing may block the transaction.ByteDance had become the world’s largest startup thanks to the success abroad of TikTok, which American lawmakers accuse of posing a threat to national security because of its ability to vacuum up data. Trump has the power to cripple ByteDance’s prized asset by adding TikTok to the U.S. entity list, which would compel American companies such as Apple Inc. and Alphabet Inc.’s Google to drop the service from their app stores.

India’s 2nd national-level plasma bank opened in Tamil Nadu
After Delhi, India’s second national-level plasma bank has been opened in Tamil Nadu at a cost of ₹2.34 crore. Over 1,30,000 people have recovered from COVID-19 in Tamil Nadu. Plasma is the liquid portion of blood that remains when all red and white blood cells and platelets have been removed. Plasma therapy uses blood donated by recovered patients to introduce antibodies in those under treatment.
