Welcome to our anniversary issue! Unbelievable as it sounds we made it this far! 

We have got here as a team and as they say ‘Team work makes the dream work’; well it sure does. The most important ingredients in a startup are team, passion and vision, guess we got all of that in the right quotient ☺

There is so much data available about having a diverse board and the need for more women to be on boards of corporates. From the UN to the government, everybody has spoken or taken action on this issue, so we thought of nose-diving into this subject with our anniversary issue. 

In this issue we have “Woman on Top” where we met up with the super awesome Radhika Gupta – CEO Edelweiss Asset Management,“Jet Set Go”a power woman  KanikaTekriwal, Co-Founder & CEO – Jet Set Go  and “Get on Board” where we take a holistic view of the agenda – Women in Boardrooms.

Success is great but we all know that life is about peaks and valleys, but the most important thing is to learn and understand how to deal with these, so we have ‘Managing Peaks & Valleys’. Also, what stops us from following our passion is often our fears, so we find out how to – ‘Face Your Fears’; and do take the fun quiz on leadership to find out ‘What kind of a leader are you?’

And don’t forget to have a read through ‘Our Journey’ where we have laid out our story so far, how we got here, how much research and effort has gone into starting ‘Wopreneur’. Of course this is just the start and there is a long way to go, but as a startup the first anniversary feels special.

The month of March means different things to different people. To some it means
the end of the financial year, to some it means a time to measure how they have
done so far with their new year’s resolution, yet to others it is time to plan the next financial year. Whichever option we choose, one thing that stands common amongst us all is 8 th March International Women’s day.

This day, 8th March came into relevance in 1913 and has been celebrated since 1975 onwards to overcome discrimination against women. Today in 2020 we are still going to celebrate International Women’s day, so logically we still agree that by celebrating one day in a year we will overcome issues that affect women in their everyday lives.
At Wopreneur we celebrate women every day, because we recognize the
importance of women’s contribution to the society and the world at large. In this
issue we spoke to women who have broken stereotypes in more ways than one.

In this issue we put our focus on women in the Travel and Hospitality sector and specifically, two very inspiring women. The first one being #Bosslady AnshuSarin, CEO of Keys Hotel- tenacious, strong, complex, passionate and straight forward, a woman who believes in reinventing herself. While “Flying High” is about Captain Nivedita Bhasin who became the youngest woman pilot in world civil aviation history to command a commercial jet aircraft at the age of 26.

We have also got ‘Travel trails’ where women travel bloggers inspire us to drop everything and begin our journey over,that which we have always been deliberating. Followed by ‘Kicking the Bucket List’ to take some inspiration from while deciding on locations to travel, and if you are not sure what type of traveller you are take the “Quiz” to find out what’s your-kind-of trip.

While in ‘What’s Cooking’ we wonder if a woman’s place is in the kitchen, as the purists never tire of drawling, then why is it that the top ranking chefs worldwide rarely include women? And finally in ‘Gastronomically Yours’, we met up with three very enterprising restaurateurs- Puja Sahu, Radhika Khandelwal and Mitali Sahani to find out what it takes to keep up a lifelong epicurean affair with food.

For 2020 we as a team are hoping to see Wopreneur reaching out to more women and make a positive difference to the society at large. So in this issue we put our focus on ourselves and in the wellness of our Mind, Body and Spirit – read what our health experts have to say ‘In pursuit of Wellness’ by Anupama Sajeet. While Rashi Bunny takes you on a Journey to find your calling in ‘Thank God it’s Thursday’ , Nisha Serai explores ‘A Mighty Mind’  which is about mental health and the importance of it in our lives.

We also spoke to some amazing women to get a Sneak-peak in their new year resolutions in ‘A Fresh Start2.0’ , ‘Love Laugh Live’ – that’s what life is about right and we cannot stress enough the importance of it! We found some interesting ways people are celebrating their new year, read about it in ‘Ringing in 2020’ and finally are you indulging in Self Love & Care, find out with our fun quiz.

The possibility of becoming whatever we want to be lies with our own selves, so go on and explore the possibilities and lets all be a better version of ourselves. Whatever we have achieved in 2019 is in the past, lets work towards creating an amazing 2020.

We live in a country with a population of 133 crores, 50% of which consists of women, but when you put on any TV channel you hardly see women on the screen. But since the past few years there has been a shift and we are delighted that this shift is happening. The thought of getting a closer look at their journeys was to learn the bumps they have faced on their way and more importantly how they overcame the difficulties.

Our interviewees this issue are national sports icons - stars and achievers in their respective fields with very inspirational journeys. Women’s Cricket in recent years has got a lot of coverage and been given weightage by the media and public; we have very often seen, heard or read about the Indian Women’s cricket team. We met up with Jhulan Goswami, the current No 1 wicket taker in the world of Women’s cricket and the ex-captain of the team. Listening to her made us believe that if you believe in your dreams and are ready to give it your all, nothing can stop you.

Dipa Karmakar, our Gymnast champion from a small town of Agartala showed the world that courage conquers it all. Her rigorous routine on the ‘vault of death’ as it is called, got her a place in the Rio Olympic final, giving hope to millions that nothing is impossible. Read about her journey to get inspired and follow your dream.

Deepa Malik on the other hand has broken many stereotypes by starting her Para-Olympic journey at 40.  As a mother of two, she went on to be recognized world wide as an iron lady. One would wonder how can one person play so many varied roles of a mother, para Olympian, entrepreneur and a philanthropist without complaining about how hard it is and that’s what makes Deepa Malik a champion for women around the world – The never say die attitude is infectious and very inspiring.

With every issue we get an insight into the amount of work that needs to be done in each sector to address gender bias, pay parity and above all be gender neutral society. As a team when we planned to speak to women artists in the music industry, there was hope that this is one industry that was un-biased (or so we thought). While doing our research the findings we came across were quite the opposite, but don’t we all live in hope?

For this issue we met up with some amazingly talents in the music industry. Read about Rekha Bharadwaj who has made her mark with her unique voice & Anuradha Pal the Tabla Maestro and a disciple of Ustad Alla Rakha  and Ustad Zakhir Hussain in ‘Mist of Music’.  

We also have a low down about DJ Paroma and DJ Priyanjana who are a rage in there field now and their journey will inspire many looking to foray into the DJ’ing world, read about them in ‘Spinning the Decks’. 

Then we have ‘Offbeat Path’ featuring Sahana & Shruti Kumar, Nikita Sharma, Anushka Lewis and Testeo Sisters who are adventurous musical souls and have chosen to go off the beaten track, forged their own pathway in hitherto unexplored rhythms and melodies. 

We also explored how life and music have similarities with ‘Notes Of Life’ , the musical scene in the world arena in ‘Women on Charts’ and  ‘Avenues to Learn Music’ the best places to learn music in India. Do take the quiz to see if you have an artist in you.

There is so much said, written and documented regarding gender bias, pay parity and the likes. While we have looked at most industries in our past issues, its interesting that being from media it took us so long to look at ‘Women in Media’ and to understand the journey of Women across the media we met up with five towering women who have trailblazing journeys in the media world. 

While talking about journeys we dive in to see – How we need to create our own future in – Future is Now. Wouldn’t you agree that in todays day-n-age we are still struggling to find our voice, so here comes the important question – Have you Found Your Voice?

In this issue we spoke to 11 women from around the world and asked them – What does Freedom Mean? Their views on freedom are diverse and yet, similar on many levels. Clichéd? Totally! We also have our feature article ‘Independence Vs Independent’ and here we spoke to Ritu Dalmia and Harish Iyer to get their take on what does it really mean to be independent and enjoy independence for the LGBTQAI community. Then we have Breaking Barriers – Episode 2 where we look into the journey of Pushpa Mai whose never-giving-up spirit is amazing. We are super inspired by our interviewees, hope you get inspired too.

We have highlighted some issues faced by the LGBTQAI community, but these questions about being independent vs independence, freedom and breaking barriers are significant for us all. The biggest barrier is that of the mind, we have to let go of inherent and sometimes hidden racism, casteism and judging others based on their gender preferences. Only then will we all be truly independent and freedom for all shall exist.

In this issue we spoke to some Movers & Shakers in the Tech Space who are breaking stereo types and creating in roads for other women in tech, by becoming role models for those aspiring to grow in this space.

While speaking about start-ups in tech it is imperative to look at the support system available so we have put together a well researched article about Tech Support, how to form a start-up team and what millennial's look for in their workspace.

Then we took a dive and looked at how everyday we make our choices and how that determines which way our life goes in It’s a Matter of Choice and how passion goes a long way in making a venture successful in Passion Never Fails.

This issue is ‘Mental Health’ as per a recent research 80% of the women suffer from mental health, but very few actually speak about it or get help. ‘Breaking Barriers’ is a series we are starting with this issue where we are going to speak to
women who are overcoming circumstances and not only that, they are
doing something about it to help others. In this issue we met up with
the very energetic Reshma Valliappan, do read her story on page 10.

While planning we often wait for situations to be perfect, sounds
familiar? We have got - Start Where You Are, Government Schemes,

This issue is dedicated to us ALL and to women who across centuries
have been ‘FIRSTS’ in their field, broken barriers and paved the way
for others to follow.

Given the theme we have an inspiring article ‘For Us All’ celebrating
women across three centuries, here we look at some startling
examples like Savitri Phule, Sister Nivedita in 18th century to Captain
Durga Banerjee, Sheila Sri Prakash in the 19th Century and Shubra
Chaddha to Avani Chaurvedi in the 21st Century. We salute Dhondo
Keshav Karve who founded the first women’s college in 1916.

Women have come a long way from where we were centuries or even

to be financially independent will be a major breakthrough and that
together we can!
