The Cover Story for the June 2015 issue of TerraGreen is on “Sustainable Smart Cities: Seeing the Big Picture by Linking Things Together”. The story focusses on the concept of Smart Cities and the author believes in the philosophy of Smart Cities as ‘Living Beings’, and that organic and inorganic components of the cities are already interacting with each other to keep the city in balance. Technology can only assist nature and human beings in understanding this connectivity between everything. The definition of Smart Cities contains certain common elements which include smart governance, smart infrastructure, smart basic facilities for the citizens and, above all, a truly interconnected system with seamless communication between sources. Another important aspect of the Smart City is a common ICT infrastructure pool by which sharing of relevant information and data helps in the evolution of appropriate policy. Sustainable Smartness is possible only when we create physical and logical links between things that were not previously linked. New telecommunications technologies, sensor technologies, and ubiquitous availability of internet mobile applications will transform the way we consume all the information from our ecosystem.
