प्राचीन काल की बात है। नर्मदा नदी जहाँ से निकलती है वहाँ अमरकंटक क्षेत्र में सोमशर्मा नामक एक ब्राह्मण रहता था। उसकी पत्नी का नाम था सुमना । सुमना के पुत्र का नाम था सुव्रत । सुव्रत जिस गुरुकुल में पढ़ता था वहाँ के कुछ शिक्षक, आचार्य ऐसे पवित्रात्मा थे कि वे उसे ऐहिक विद्या पढ़ाने के साथ योगविद्या और भगवान की भक्ति की बातें भी सुनाते थे।
