In this issue

Geopolitics March 2018 issue looks indepth at the India's use of space technology for military purposes that is decidedly secretive and probably makes extensive use of dual-purpose satellites for military functions. This, despite the fact that the country does not have a dedicated space programme. At the same time, Indian private sector firms do have the capacity to contribute to the country's space programmes that may be of help to the military. All this is put in perspective with a detailed study of the defence budgets since 2014-15 that has put paid to the demand for creation of Cyber, Space and Special Forces commands, which is far below the trajectory of the demand projected by the armed forces and other departments. As a result, it will not be possible for India to sign new defence contracts for more than `50,000 crore in 2018-19. Plus: A close look at the mess in the Maldives and also how the Gulf nations have received special attention from the Prime Minister.
