Geopolitics' February 2020, a DefExpo Special, focuses on the potential of such exhibitions. Why should the present system of organising the DefExpo be done away with in favour of the British example of privatising the exhibition? Also, a look at why the 'Make in India' policy has not been effective in the defence sector. What is lacking in the policy to achieve the goal and ways of achieving it. 
Since independence, India has been one of the world's largest importers of weapons.  From high altitude socks for the Indian army to aircraft carriers for the Indian navy and almost everything in between is imported in hard currency from abroad. Though the Modi government has taken up 'Make in India' with a lot of intent, the time has come for a clear roadmap to achieve that goal. The road map involves five elements.

Timed with Aero India 2019, Geopolitics February 2019 issue takes an indepth look at India's depleting Air Force squadron strength in a hostile strategic environment and advocates that the defence budget has to be at least 2.5 per cent of GDP for next two decades in general and capital budget of Rs 60,000 crore a year for the Indian forces.

Geopolitics' December 2018 issue focuses on the Indian Navy. It requires holistic treatment and radical measures. However, in India the Department of Defence Production has not risen to the occasion. And it is in that context, that the magazine focuses on Hindustan Aeronautics Limited. The country's premier aviation establishment, HAL has  been invaluable in building a strong military aircraft manufacturing, repair and overhaul base. However, whether it is a matter of perception or reality, or something in between, in the view of the end-users who will use HAL's products in combat, the twin issues of quality control and production delays have hurt India's defence capability.

Geopolitics' October 2018 issue celebrates the 86th year of the Indian Air Force where Air Chief Marshal Birender Singh Dhanoa PVSM AVSM YSM VM ADC assures the country that the IAF is prepared to respond to future challenges and safeguard Indian skies. He acknowledges that the IAF faces  many challenges and that its procurement schemes were being prioritised within the budgetary resources to ensure that urgent and critical capabilities were acquired first but he maintains that it was potent enough to deliver a befitting response to any contingency. The issue also looks at the country's lengthy and  cumbersome weapons acquisition process that is often plagued with the constant charges of lack of transparency, kickbacks and  corruption and suggests what the Air Force has to buy and make quickly. It also finds out what the Indian Air Force must acquire the right number and types of aircraft that complement its combat strategy.
There is also a detailed report on how the IAF can counter the Chinese aerospace power that is growing by leaps and bounds, even as Pakistan is looking to boost its air power via Chinese knockoffs. The focus for the August issue of Geopolitics is on: Make in India. Will the Modi government be able to usher in a new era for the country's defence industry by placing private arms manufacturers at the heart of its mission to transform India into an industrial power? However, there should be a thrust on local products which should be competitively priced because the defence budget cannot be made to sustain and bankroll an inefficient local production regime. Unless an indigenous product is priced attractively with a developed eco-system, mission 'Make in India' will remain a pipe dream. Also, a detailed look at the problems facing India's OFB and DPSUs that make the foreign partners uneasy. Most of the problems emanate with the excessive delays and cost overruns associated with manufacturing inefficiency as well as poor quality control.  
In the international section, Geopolitics looks at how due to complementarities in Japan and India's development cooperation approaches and their blossoming strategic convergences,  both are exploring the possibilities of trilateral cooperation with the continent of Africa. The July issue of Geopolitics has an insight in US President Donald Trump's new weapon: Countering America's Adversaries Through Sanctions Act (CAATSA).  The United States wants to scuttle India's burgeoning defence ties with Russia via CAATSA. Despite being India's dominant arms supplier for decades, Russia finds its influence in military procurements is waning. But that does not mean that the time-tested military relationship between the two countries is under serious threats. Also, a close look at the key India-Russia defence deals. Geopolitics June 2018 finds out the progress that the country has made with the 'Make in India' initiative in defence production. Does India have the potential to become self-reliant in armaments? That was one of the reasons for the launch of the ambitious 'Make in India' programme. However, four years have passed since the 'Make in India' idea was initiated. In the defence sector, it has hardly had any impact, thanks to the absence of a policy framework, unsystematic efforts to promote domestic production and budgetary constraints. But there is a silver lining since four developments hold a lot of promise for the defence industry. 
Despite the claims of greater indigenisation in defence procurement, India's arms imports have increased by almost 25 per cent over the last 10 years. Despite the promises of 'Make in India' being touted as the panacea for reducing the nation's unhealthy dependency on defence exports, it is quite clear now to defence observers, that at least for the next 20 years, India will continue to import greater than 50 per cent of its total defence requirements across all three services and paramilitary forces. 
India is taking the first steps to modernise its border surveillance systems with a combination of automated and virtual sensors and barriers that promises to make the quest to secure its borders from infiltration much more secure and effective.  
In the international section, a look at India-Indonesia ties that will reach new heights when the increasing political cooperation between the two countries is accompanied by enlarged economic interactions. Plus: All our regular features.

Geopolitics' May issue takes a look at the emergence of India's nuclear arsenal. It has been 20 years since the country became a nuclear weapon power. In all these years, it has been enhancing its nuclear arsenal and command structure to ensure the viability of the force against the growing nuclear prowess of both Pakistan and China. Does India have enough quality scientific/technological manpower to develop its industrial base? The fact is that we do not spend enough on R&D to retain or attract the best talent. January 2018 began with signs that the long-awaited modernisation of our armed forces could face more roadblocks. How else can one describe the cancellation of the order of the army's Anti-Tank Guided Missiles (ATGMs) -- despite the fact that our army urgently required these missiles?
