Cruising Heights December 2018 issue concentrates on how aviation infrastructure - or rather the lack of it - could be a major hindrance to the growth of aviation in the country. The cover story looks at Mumbai's Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport that remains constrained for slots even though it created a record of logging the highest number of flights from an airport with a single runway. 
The magazine also looks at the ups and downs in the Jet Airways saga as well as two airports in the world: one of them the world's largest at Istanbul that was recently inaugurated and the other one in Mexico that has become the focus of a political battle even before construction could start.
Also a major focus on the LEAP engine. On July 13, 2008, GE Aviation and Safran Aircraft Engines, partners in the 50/50 CFM International joint venture, made aviation history by launching the advanced LEAP-X engine programme. Ten years later, this engine is delivering everything that was promised that day and more.

Cruising Heights' November 2018 issue focuses on the Indian aviation scene with domestic carriers mounting long-haul flights to foreign destinations: 148 new services have start this October and November with  82 new services by IndiGo alone. The cost-conscious Indian traveler has been suddenly swamped with so many flights to foreign destinations this winter and holiday season that he could have ever dreamt of earlier. 
The issue also discusses IndiGo's losses and analyses how IndiGo's founder Rahul Bhatia has the capability to weather the storm and help his airline keep its head in the skies despite the losses and the inhospitable atmosphere. 
There is also a story on how plane engine maker CFM is trying to overcome the problems it has been facing. Today, the LEAP engines - now on aircraft from four carriers - from the CFM stable have had a clear run with no major issues.

The size of industry in 2015 was Rs five billion (Rs 500 crore). Today, the size remains at the same Rs five billion. While on the one hand, we do not miss any opportunity to tom-tom the rapid growth of the aviation sector and how the country will be in the top three in the next five years in the world, the MRO industry – one could refer to it as the backbone of the aviation sector -- has been totally forgotten by the government. Cruising Heights' August issue takes an indepth look at the SpiceJet saga. Cruising Heights' July issue takes a close look at Jet Airways, once India's only carrier with all the bells and whistles. Today as it celebrates its 25th anniversary, the carrier looks old and tired. In the domestic skies, Jet has lost its dominant position. Internationally too, Jet is an also ran. Now that it is inducting the new B737 MAX8, the carrier has the opportunity to get back the leadership position it once held. 
The issue also has a run-down of the mess that Air India is in. Caught in a tight-jacketed financial bind, the airline started its downhill journey a long ago and if nothing is done to revive its fortunes by the end of this financial year, India could bid farewell to the iconic national carrier. Cruising Heights' June 2018 issue details how far the government's promise to make the Aam Aadmi fly is from reality with only 15 per cent of the total 453 routes awarded to various airline and helicopter operators taking off. Given the present scenario: lack of infrastructure, many airports still awaiting required approvals and airlines still huffing over the approvals to start operations, the fate of the UDAN initiative still hangs in doubt - this, after a year the scheme was unveiled. 
Even so, UDAN has brought cheer for manufacturers of smaller aircraft, particularly ATR, Bombardier and Embraer, all angling for a share of the market. Also, there is a one-on-one with CEO of WOW air, an airline that has managed to capture fliers with its jaw dropping prices. The April 2018 issue of Cruising Heights pieces together the Pratt & Whitney GTF engines- A320neos problems. Snags with the engines have continued to dog the A320neos prompting regulator DGCA to order grounding of 600+ flights of IndiGo and GoAir. Was the grounding a panic reaction? The engine makers say a solution has been found but the domestic operators' growth plans have gone awry and fliers are in a state of panic. 
In addition, an indepth story on the paucity of trained personnel in aviation. It is literally a problem of plenty for Indian carriers as they seek to increase their aircraft fleet sizes to cater for passenger demand that continues to rise year-on-year. Reason: The airlines will need to make even greater efforts to add captains and first officers to pilot their aircraft. The world had the safest year in aviation and with that focus Cruising Heights' February issue highlights the innovation that is taking place to keep the aviation industry safe. 2017 was indeed an incredible year for aviation. Carriers the world over saw profits - and quite large ones at that - from passenger as well as cargo operations. While established aircraft manufacturers delivered a large number of planes, Russia and China got their act together to showcase their brand new single-aisle planes. There was also a fair amount of politics: the Airbus succession, the Bombardier-Airbus tie-up and, of course, the US Big Three versus the Middle East Big Three. 
2017 was the year when IndiGo achieved a milestone that Indian carriers dream of: 1000 flights a day. It was also the year when the government's vision of letting the common Indian fly was realised through its Regional Connectivity Scheme.
