For years, India has referred to itself as the "pharmacy of the world." It is ranked third internationally in pharmaceutical output by volume accounting for 20% of the global supply of generics. The Indian pharmaceutical industry is currently valued at $50 Bn and is noted for its generic pharmaceuticals and low-cost vaccines. India is the world’s largest vaccine supplier the country produces roughly 60% of all vaccines. The pharmaceutical sector is beneficial not just to India but also to the rest of the world.

Some of the primary areas of the Indian pharmaceutical business include generic drugs, over-the-counter medications, bulk drugs, vaccines, contract research and manufacturing, biosimilars and biologics.

Though this bodes well for the Indian pharmaceutical business, it is not the time for condescension, the industry has a long way to go. Selling only generic drugs will not yield enough for their growth and sustenance. Generic medications are often sold at much lower prices and profit margins than their branded counterparts. This happens when a drug's patent expires, and competition among manufacturers grows.

The Indian pharmaceutical sector, divided into pre-patent and post-patent periods, has developed into a world-class generics business, but commercialization of patented items has been slow.

This calls for a shift in the pharmaceutical industry's approach, from producing only existing drugs using novel process approaches to finding and commercializing new molecules.
