These words of Bill Gates, former chief executive and current chairman of Microsoft, clearly
explain the crucial role, a talented and aligned workforce plays for bringing business strategy to life
and ensuring an organisation delivers on its business objectives. Most of the organisations would
agree with this, as strategic workforce planning provides the basis for the talent required to deliver the
strategy and understand that the growth is impacted if they do not have the right people available to
drive business objectives.
In this current scenario when there is a crunch of right talent, workforce planning and metrics is
on top of the mind for most business leaders, HR managers and corporate management teams, as they
all want to understand how talent is fl owing through their organisations, and whether they are drawing
and creating the right workforce for present and future business needs.
However, the issue of workforce planning remains an illusive challenge to many organisations as
the questions linger: Do they have the skills and capabilities to implement effective workforce planning;
Is there an effective, planned and consistent approach to workforce planning; How they can align
workforce planning with business strategy; and, Do they have fully effective workforce planning tools
and techniques that allow getting a clear view on resource allocation?
