The year 2017 was witness to major developments in the world arena. In west Europe, Britain voted itself out from the EU, formally dubbed as ‘Brexit’; while Catalonia - an important historical constituency of Spain, has been bidding for elections for separate statehood and independence. Meanwhile, the US President, Trump, in typical fashion, has unequivocally declared Jerusalem as the Israeli capital, which was promptly denounced by the UN. 2017 also saw the passage of many important presidential elections – including the French, German and Czech Republic’s.

Closer home, as 2017 draws to a close, we bring three special country reports.

The fi rst report carries a feature from Bangladesh, which recently celebrated
its 47th ‘Victory Day’, a war that was hard-fought by the Bengali nation
with Pakistani forces. The independence came at a heavy price, as there was much loss of lives – of unarmed civilians as well. Today, Bangladesh is making giant strides towards progress, as it records a steady 7.28 percent growth percentage with the poverty rate reduced to an equitable 22.4 percent. Bangladesh has also done its bit on the humanitarian ground, by providing shelter to millions of forcibly displaced homeless Rohingyas.

As we step into April, we find ourselves amidst a flurry of global events and significant developments that have the potential to shape the course of international relations. In the annals of global diplomacy, certain moments stand out as defining chapters in a nation’s journey on the world stage.

Our cover page stands as a powerful testament to the values of inclusion, attachment, and friendship. Under India’s G20 presidency, we witnessed a historic moment as the African Union was welcomed into the G20 grouping. This achievement speaks volumes about the power of collaboration and the doors that open when nations come together in a spirit of mutual respect and shared goals.

As I present to you the August edition of The Diplomatist, I’m thrilled to delve into a realm of international relations that brims with potential and promise – India’s engagement with Latin America and the Caribbean. This special focus edition unravels the intricate threads that bind two vibrant regions, revealing the depth of diplomatic ties, shared aspirations, and avenues for collaboration.

I am excited to present to you the July Edition of The Diplomatist, filled with compelling insights into international affairs and India’s global outreach. In this edition, we focus on the momentous visit of Prime Minister Modi to the US, which has strengthened the bilateral relations between the two nations.

The Month of May was a busy month in India’s diplomatic calendar. It also saw the completion of 9 Years of the Modi Government. In 2014, Narendra Modi was sworn in for the first time as Prime Minister and then took oath at the office for the second term on May 30, 2019. 

People often ask me; why did you select “Extraordinary & Plenipotentiary Diplomatist” as the name for your journal. Back in 1996, when there was no publication on Diplomacy in the entire Delhi/NCR, I along with my late husband, worked hard to sow the seeds of this astute creation which is now India’s premium publication on diplomacy with an extensive distribution network and high readership.

The 1992 Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro was unforgettable for its momentous agreements to direct sustainable development worldwide. The first principle of the 1992 Rio Declaration on Environment and Development states: “Human beings are at the centre of concern for sustainable development.

Take a moment to pat your back and rejoice in how you have progressed over the last year. Whether you have changed jobs, started a new career and worked on your individual marking, growth is growth. 

This is a momentous note for me to write. I have been proud to see how Diplomatist’s coverage has evolved over the past 26 years. But my proudest achievement, looking back at these years is the community we have built. 

With a little over a month until the doors open for our annual Diplomatic Nite, I am filled with overwhelming gratitude and appreciation for all our associates, patrons, subscribers, writers and intellectuals who have spared their valuable time and interest to contribute in so many ways to the magazine and our other initiatives. 

It is with a heavy heart that I am writing you this note today. I felt quite surreal hearing about the death of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. I immediately turned BBC News on. Death came as a friend, they said, the monarch passed away “peacefully” in Balmoral Castle. 

Tricolours, flowers, murals, NCC cadets dressed in regional outfits – in short, it was a marvel to behold when Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressed the nation from Red Fort as India embarks on its 76th year of Independence. 

For more than a century, Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) in Africa was almost completely engrossed in the extraction and export of natural assets. But since the turn of the millennium, this tendency has changed and in the past few years, the trend has finally been overturned. International investors now come to Africa more frequently for the assurance of its people rather than for its physical possessions.

In the first six months of 2022, Sri Lanka has experienced several events that validate precisely how crucial handling the environment is: Famine, landslides, garbage falls, flash floods and many other incidents at scales that have not grabbed the attention of those not affected.  The loss of lives and possessions and the disturbance to routines that make us who we are psychologically and mentally is hard-hitting to live through and slow to reverse – if it ever does. 

India will take over the rotating presidency of the Group of 20 (G20) from December 1, 2022 to November 30, 2023. Hosting G20 Presidency will be a fitting aspiration and a welcome challenge for India. India has been a member of the G20 since its origin in 1999.

On 6 February 2022, Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II became the first British monarch in history to celebrate a Platinum Jubilee marking 70 years of service to the people of the United Kingdom, the Realms and the Commonwealth. A spectacular achievement, which makes Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II Britain’s longest-reigning monarch and the world’s longest severing Head of State.

These days, technology and knowledge are everything. The right education is important for students to be ready for their impending professional lives.
Numerous efforts are being undertaken to instill the business essence at the grassroots level. Among the changes caused by the pandemic is the rising handling of digital apps, smart products and platforms.

The most thought-provoking and beneficial annotations on misconduct and punishment don’t come in the middle of watching a crime. And so, while the world has no option but to continue to try to act and respond in real-time to the dismay of a new war in Europe, we also understand that the implication of what is going on will settle gradually. 

Out with the old and in with the new. The year gone by was a rollercoaster ride. 
William Arthur Ward, an admired American writer, once said, “Feeling gratitude and not expressing it is like wrapping a present and not giving it.” His words ring true as we enter 2022 with renewed energy.

India’s partnership with western Africa is based on a model of cooperation which is responsive to the needs of African countries. It is demand-driven and free of conditionalities. It is based on our history of friendship, historical ties, and a sense of deep solidarity. As Indian Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi has underlined, African priorities are our priorities.

In 2020, a global catastrophe traumatized the world. It led to a dreadful number of deaths, people were frightened to leave home, and caused economic suffering not witnessed in many generations. Its consequences are rippling across the world. 


In May this year, India fought with the second wave of the COVID-19 pandemic, and thereafter the intensity of international rendezvous has amplified. There are a number of developments over the past few months which yet again send a strong message that India is there to play a significant role with the rest of the world.
