The Gem & Jewellery Export Promotion Council (GJEPC) was set up by the Ministry of Commerce, Government of India (GoI) in 1966. It was one of several Export Promotion Councils (EPCs) launched by the Indian Government, to boost the country’s export thrust, when India’s post-Independence economy began making forays in the international markets. GJEPC was granted autonomous status in 1998.GJEPC has over the years effectively moulded the scattered efforts of individual exporters to make the Gem and Jewellery sector a powerful engine driving India’s export-led growth. With more than 6,000 members spread all over the country, the Council is primarily involved in promoting the Indian Gem & Jewellery products to the international market and leverage their international relationships.

The dark clouds started hovering the Indian jewellery industry with finance minister Nirmala Sithraman proposing to increase customs duty on gold and other precious metals from 10% to 12.5%.  This was the time when the industry was demanding to reduce the gold import duty. Gold imports play a very vital role in the Indian economy, but the latest proposal just gusted it all. Our jeweller’s disappointment over the proposal stands right as, at the time when the industry is going through a lull phase, a positive announcement would have encouraged the sector. IIJS Signature which is one of India’s top jewellery shows this year too concluded on an optimistic note. It is a show, established as a consistent and competitive source which retailers and consumers the world over have come to appreciate.  The 12th edition of Signature held during the wedding season attracted commendable walk-ins with serious buyers.

With so many celebrity weddings happening around, the wedding season has truly arrived in India. The Indian wedding industry is over Rs 100,000 crore and is growing at 25 to 30 per cent annually. Jewellery plays a very key role occupying more that 60% of the wedding market.We are celebrating this phenomenon with a special coverstory on the bridal jewellery trends 2018, an exclussively curated coverage.

The more things change, the more they stay the same is an English translation of a 19th century French saying and is an apt way to describe the gold market of last year. The average annual dollar gold prices rose a mere 0.5% in 2017, a stark contrast to all prior years this century which have seen moves (whether up or down) of more than 5% and typically double-digit. Introduction of the 3 percent Goods and Services Tax (GST) at the start of July was a contributing factor for less jewellery demand. A large swathe of Indian consumers had pre-empted the introduction of GST by bringing forward their gold purchases to Q2. This left demand a little flat at the beginning of July. The jewellery trade also writhed with the new tax system. Another issue during the year was the launch of anti-money laundering regulation adding more woes to the industry which was introduced in Aug 2017. Due to stiff opposition from the industry, the government lifted the PMLA from the gems and jewellery sector in early October.

Whatsoever be the issues, the Indian jewellery industry always stayed strong fighting the challenges and moving ahead. This shows the unity and the commitment of our fellow jewellers which further encouraged the jewellery trade. Nothing can stop the industry from growing bigger and reaching greater heights. Though the market will continue to adapt to GST, allowing demand to recover to a certain extent and the contemporary designs and trends will encourage demand.

Let’s see what the year 2018  will bring for the jewellery industry and I am sure it is going to be more fruitful and positive for the trade. 2018 also witnessed the appointment of new leaders of GJEPC. I take this platform to convey my heartiest congratulations to the new Chairman of GJEPC Mr Pramod Agarwal and Mr Colin Shah as Vice Chairman of GJEPC.

The govt decision of reversing its August order of bringing
gems and jewellery dealers under the purview of the
reporting requirement of the Prevention of Money
Laundering Act (PMLA) was a big relief to the jewellers.
Another good news for the industry exemption of IGST on gold
imports which allows banks and 5 canalising agencies, including
MMTC, MSTC to import gold without paying 3 per cent Integrated
Goods and Service Tax (IGST). It is again an appreciated move as it
will smoothen the process of import.
Kerala’s appetite for gold is known all and it is the golden hub of the
country housed with iconic jewellery retail brands. It was an honour
to co-organise Kerala Jewellery Show with the renowned association
of Kerala, the AKGSMA. It is just the first edition and looking
forward to more editions.

The eleventh-hour amendment in the finance bill at the Kerala Legislative Assembly on withdrawal of purchase tax on jewellery was another commendable act from the Kerala Govt.Gold Monetisation Scheme or popularly known as GMS is a wonderful initiative but is it a success? It was a significant victory for the Kerala Jewellers who actively fought unitedly for the purchase tax roll back and now we are expecting a positive outcome with the Kerala Govt implementing the roll back soon. The retrospective collection of 5% purchase tax imposed by the then United Democratic Front (UDF) government in 2013-14 had the jewellers hard with the tax authority serving notices for a total amount of Rs2,600 crore.

Gold demand in Q2 followed the trends from the prior quarter: huge ETF infl ows counterbalanced by anaemic jewellery demand amid rising prices. Investment was the largest component of gold demand for two consecutive quarters –the fi rst time this has ever happened.

Hailed as one of the largest gem & jewellery trade shows in Asia, 33 rd edition of IIJS once again established itself as a force to reckon with.
