I have often wondered why the Risen Lord chose to appear to a woman first.  In the Gospel of John, Mary is the one who finds Jesus' at the empty tomb.  Is it because it was she who went to the tomb? Is it because she discovered that the tomb was empty? Or is it because she as Magdalene had a new identity in Christ? The identity that was given to her by the Lord to recognise and regard herself as an independent personality rather than as someone else’s daughter, wife, mother, friend or prostitute. Christ had in mind the unique role women would play in the building of His Kingdom by fulfilling the divine commission (Mathew 28:18-20) through his promise.

One verse that often inspires me and keeps me going is what the master tells  his servants upon his return. “Well done, good and faithful servant, now enter  into the joy of your master” Traditionally, the parable of the talents has been seen as an exhortation to  Jesus’ disciples to use their God-given gifts in the service of God, and to  take risks for the sake of the Kingdom. These gifts have been seen to include personal abilities and charisms. The simple truth being, that each one is 
bestowed with talents, and charisms and the way we respond to these gifts  in the light of His glory, is how we enter the ‘joy of the master’. The positive  rewards are based upon their faithfulness in properly using what Christ had entrusted them. This probably speaks of positive reward for believers who are faithful in serving Christ.

Often I ask Jesus Youth, “What do you find most fascinating about the movement?” “Among so many groups and organisations, how is it different?” Most often the first answers would be, “In Jesus Youth there is an intimate fellowship” or “It is a close-knit family”. I think people in the movement first think of their deep relationships. Of course, then people continue to speak about its spirituality, the six Pillars, joyful Catholic identity and the like. But often what they value most in the movement is that here they belong like in a family. Jesus Youth started with its small beginnings in Kerala and has travelled through many fruitful years, reaching out to different lands and cultures. In many countries the movement finds itself amongst a variety of other Catholic movements.

“After a long stormy night spent in Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament, hearing the preaching of the Pope and fellowship, a sea of young Catholics from around the world stood still in the abandoned airfield in Cuatro Vientos, Spain at the final Mass celebrated by Pope Benedict XVI. Groups of young people waving their bright green and yellow Brazilian flags cheered proudly as the Shepherd announced that the next World Youth Day would take place on the shores of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, the theme to be taken from the Gospel according to St. Matthew “Go and make disciples of all nations”.

Recently a parish priest shared an interesting event that challenged his life. He said that he heard the calling bell ring one fine evening and opened the door of his rectory to see two young women clad in white. With a beautiful smile they told the priest that they had good news for his salvation. Recognising them to be from another denomination he informed them that he was a Catholic priest, yet they insisted that he give them some time to speak on this good news of salvation. The parish priest told us that he was challenged by their enthusiasm, urgency and intrepidness to share the Good News.

“During the Second Vatican Council there was an emotional tension as we faced the common task of making the truth and beauty of the faith shine out in our time, without sacrificing it to the demands of the present or leaving it tied to the past... Therefore I believe that the most important thing, especially on such a significant occasion as this, is to revive in the whole Church that positive tension, that yearning to announce Christ again to contemporary man” (Pope Benedict XVI - Homily of the Inaugural Holy Mass of the Faith Year, 11th Oct. 2012). The synod started with this strong exultation of reviving a positive tension for new evangelization.

“Be bold heralds of New Evangelization” urged Pope Benedict XVI to a group of Bishops during a recently held gathering. In these days of renewed focus on ‘transmission of Christian Faith’, the role of Bishops in the life and mission of a movement like ours is ever-growing.

Jesus Youth is an international Catholic youth movement with a charismatic spirituality. It had its beginnings in Kerala (India), but is now active in nearly 25 different countries around the world.
