Coastal shipping refers to the movement of cargo over water without crossing a major ocean. The potential of coastal shipping has not yet been fully exploited in India. Though coastal shipping has evident advantages over land based modes of transportation, it has not yet become an integral part of the country’s transport infrastructure. It is energy efficient and economically viable mode of transportation. The ships plying in 3000 ports around the world are responsible for emission of three per cent of world’s greenhouse gases. It is taking a toll on the environment. So, it is necessary to take measures to reduce the carbon footprint of maritime industry across the globe. Green marine is the need of the hour.
