Controversy started around Perumal Murugan's nove 'Madhorubagan' which was published in 2010 and later translated into English by Penguin as 'One Part Woman'. Caste and religious outifts whose identity are yet to be revealed started protesting the contents of the novel since it alleged portrayed women of Thiruchengode and the Kailasanthar Temple in that Western Tamilnadu town in a very bad light. The protesters did not relent even after the writer came forward to remove the objectionable contents in the next edition of the novel. After a meeting organised between both the parties by the District Revenue Officer of Namakkal district, both the parties signed a 'peace' treaty which included Perumal Murugan's unconditional apology and assurance that henceforth he will not write anything controversial. After this meeting Perumal Murugan announced that the 'Writer' in him is dead.

The murder of couple Kannagi and Murugesan which lead to the coinage of the term honour killing which means killing the couple who violate the caste rules and marry a partner from a lower caste rocked the state in 2003. Since one of the victims Murugesan belonged to the SC community, the case was handled under the SC/ST Prevention of Atrocities Act and a compensation of Rs.2,00,000 to the family of the deceased had been ordered by the Court. But it has been eleven years since the murder but still the TN Government is yet to pay the compensation.
