Asserting that his government will implement the five poll 'guarantees' promised ahead of the assembly polls, Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah on Wednesday said officials have shared their inputs on financial implications, and the cabinet will meet on June 2 to decide on the implementation.

The Congress government, which is under pressure to implement five guarantee schemes in Karnataka, is likely to make an announcement in this regard on Friday after the cabinet meeting, according to sources. The implementation of the likely announcement may commence from next week, sources added. The party leadership is contemplating to organise a massive public rally on the day of the implementation or a day before. The top leaders of the party would be present in the rally. Since Rahul Gandhi is on foreign tour, the details are being worked out on how to go about it, sources said.

Former Minister and five-time Congress MLA U T Khader on Wednesday was unanimously elected as the new Speaker of the Karnataka Legislative Assembly. Khader (53) will be the first Muslim leader to serve as Speaker of Karnataka Assembly. The bank notes in Rs 2,000 denomination will continue to be a legal tender, the RBI said in a statement.

A day before counting of votes polled in the Karnataka Assembly elections, both the ruling BJP and the Congress on Friday went into huddles and held strategy sessions on ways to keep the flock together. They also considered reaching out to independent candidates who are likely to win, as most exit polls predicted a tight contest between the two parties.

Karnataka registered a voter turnout of 73.19 per cent in the Assembly polls which election officials on Thursday termed a record, while sharing the final figures.
