The Election Commission of India on Thursday announced the schedule of the election to the office of the President of India. The presidential election will be held on July 18 while the votes will be counted on July 21. The counting of polls will be held in New Delhi. A total of 4,809 electors to vote in the Presidential elections in 2022 and no political party can issue a whip to its members, announced Chief Election Commissioner Rajiv Kumar.

The root cause of the threetrain crash in Odisha's Balasore district and the people responsible for it have been identified, Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said on Sunday. He also said the Railways is aiming to restore normal services on the affected tracks by Wednesday. Talking to reporters at the accident site, the railway minister said the issue is of electric point machine, a vital device for railway signalling, and electronic interlocking.

Atleast 261 people were killed and over 900 were injured in a horrific train derailment that took place on Friday evening at around 7 pm in Odisha’s Balasore. The derailment of 10 to 12 coaches of the Shalimar-Chennai Coromandel Express caused them to fall onto the opposite track. Subsequently, the Bengaluru-Howrah Superfast Express collided with the derailed coaches, leading to the derailment of three to four of its own coaches. The crash also involved a goods train, adding to the tragedy. The Congress government, which is under pressure to implement five guarantee schemes in Karnataka, is likely to make an announcement in this regard on Friday after the cabinet meeting, according to sources. The implementation of the likely announcement may commence from next week, sources added. The party leadership is contemplating to organise a massive public rally on the day of the implementation or a day before. The top leaders of the party would be present in the rally. Since Rahul Gandhi is on foreign tour, the details are being worked out on how to go about it, sources said.

Former Minister and five-time Congress MLA U T Khader on Wednesday was unanimously elected as the new Speaker of the Karnataka Legislative Assembly. Khader (53) will be the first Muslim leader to serve as Speaker of Karnataka Assembly. The Reserve Bank of India on Friday announced withdrawal of Rs 2,000 currency notes from circulation, and existing notes in circulation can either be deposited in bank accounts or exchanged by September 30.
The bank notes in Rs 2,000 denomination will continue to be a legal tender, the RBI said in a statement.

Karnataka registered a voter turnout of 73.19 per cent in the Assembly polls which election officials on Thursday termed a record, while sharing the final figures.

The voting for the Karnataka Assembly concluded at 6 pm on Wednesday, with EVMs and VVPATs being sealed and secured at polling booths. The overall voter turnout till 5 pm was recorded at 65.70 per cent, the Election Commission (EC) said.
