Congress interim President Sonia Gandhi on Tuesday chaired a meeting of the Congress Working Committee (CWC) via video conference on the situation along the Line of Actual Control (LAC) and the coronavirus pandemic and said the country is in a crisis due to the "mismanagement" of the BJP-led government and the "wrong policies" pursued by it.

BJP MLA Ram Kadam has claimed that a famous actress-cum-model had filed a sexual assault complaint against Raj Kundra on April 14 this year at Mumbai's Juhu Police Station. "But the application wasn't moved ahead and there was pressure on the model," he added. Kadam also questioned the Mumbai Police for not taking action against Kundra.

• To mark the completion of one year of announcing the National Education Policy, 2020, PM Narendra Modi announced, "Indian Sign Language will be also taught as a subject at secondary level." "For the first time, Indian Sign Language has been given the status of a language subject," he added. He also launched other initiatives like Academic Bank of Credit.

 Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman today announced that during Cabinet meeting, it was decided that depositors of banks under moratorium will receive 5 lakh insurance on deposits within 90 days. Of these 90 days, 45 days will be given to banks to collect depositors' data and contact insurers. It'll be applicable to banks currently under moratorium and all such future cases.

Government has named states with districts having more than 10% COVID-19 positivity rate for the week ending July 26. Fifty-four districts have positivity rate of over 10%, with 10 districts from Kerala, 10 from Manipur, 7 from Nagaland, 6 from Mizoram and 6 from Meghalaya. Other states including Arunachal Pradesh and Rajasthan also have districts with over 10% positivity rate.

Rajasthan CM Ashok Gehlot has said that four of the tourists who died due to the landslide in Himachal Pradesh's Kinnaur were from the state and he offered condolences to their families. Jaipur-based Ayurveda doctor Deepa Sharma and three members of a Sikar-based family- Anurag, Maya and Richa Biyani- were killed. CM announced ₹2 lakh aid each for their families.

Tihar Jail administration allowed two-time Olympic medallist Sushil Kumar to watch television in a common area of the jail ward ahead of the Tokyo Olympics. "He has sought a TV set to keep in touch with the current happenings outside the jail and to get updates about wrestling," DG (Tihar) said. Kumar was arrested in connection with a wrestler's murder.

Kerala government on Wednesday announced that the state has decided to impose complete lockdown on July 24 and 25. The state's health ministry has been directed to conduct a mass testing campaign on July 23, with a target of 3 lakh tests. The ministry has been told to specially focus on districts having COVID-19 positivity rate above 10%.

During the briefing on sero-survey amid COVID-19 pandemic, ICMR chief Dr Balram Bhargava said, "We know clearly that children can handle viral infections much better than adults." He added that when districts start considering reopening of schools, "it'll be wise to open primary schools first". He stated that some Scandinavian countries didn't shut their primary schools throughout the pandemic.

In a directive issued in view of COVID-19 ahead of Bakrid, the UP government has banned animal sacrifice in public places and has also prohibited gatherings of over 50 people. Only designated places or private premises should be used for animal sacrifices, a government spokesperson said. Cows, camels or any other 'banned animals' cannot be sacrificed during the festival.

The Delhi Disaster Mana g e m e n t A u t h o r i t y (DDMA) has cancelled the Kanwar Yatra in the national capital in view of COVID-19, a day after UP barred people from participating in the annual religious pilgrimage. No celebrations, processions or gatherings related to the yatra are allowed in Delhi. Uttarakhand had also cancelled the yatra for the second year in a row.

 Michael Thomas Gargiulo, a 45-year-old serial killer who stabbed actor Ashton Kutcher's then-girlfriend Ashley Ellerin 47 times in Los Angeles in 2001, has been sentenced to death. Gargiulo, called 'Hollywood Ripper' and 'The Boy Next Door Killer', received the sentence for killing Ashley in 2001, a 32-yearold woman in 2005 and for attempting murder of another woman in 2008.

According to an ICMR study to check the effectiveness of vaccination in the second COVID-19 wave, two doses of vaccine were found to be 95% effective in preventing deaths, NITI Aayog's Dr VK Paul said. One dose of vaccine was able to reduce the mortality rate by 82%, he said. The study was conducted among 1,17,524 Tamil Nadu Police personnel.

Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal on Thursday said that the schools in the national capital won't reopen for now. "Internationally, trends show that the third wave of COVID-19 is imminent," the Delhi CM told in a statement. "So we don't want to take any risk until the vaccination process is complete," he added.

• Rajasthan Health Minister and Congress MLA Raghu Sharma on Wednesday said that growing population is a problem, adding, "It is time for 'Hum do, hamare ek'." "The country has to think about controlling it so that future generations can have a better life," he stated. This comes after BJP-led Assam and Uttar Pradesh governments proposed population control bills.

Approximately 73.4% of COVID-19 cases reported in India in July so far, are from five states namely Kerala, Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh and Odisha, Union Joint Secretary (Health) Lav Agarwal said on Tuesday. Kerala contributed 30.3% of total cases in July, while Maharashtra contributed 20.8% of cases this month, government figures showed.

• Punjab government on Friday decided to lift weekend and night curfew restrictions in the state. The government also ordered opening of bars, cinema halls, restaurants and malls, among other places, subject to all eligible staff members and visitors having taken at l e a s t o n e d o s e o f COVID-19 vaccine. It also allowed gatherings of 100 persons indoors and 200 outdoors from Monday

Violence erupted during the nomination for the Block Pramukh elections in Uttar Pradesh's Sitapur district. Videos of the incident showed bullets being fired and crude bombs being hurled, while policemen were seen running away to seek shelter. Some videos also showed the policemen resorting to lathicharge to disperse the crowd. Three people have reportedly sustained bullet injuries.

After Juhi Chawla and other plaintiffs filed a plea against 20 lakh fine for a suit over introduction of 5G in India, Delhi High Court said it was "shocked" at their conduct. The court stated that it took a lenient view when it didn't initiate contempt proceedings. It granted Juhi and other petitioners a week's time to deposit the penalty

Highlighting media reports on rising tourist numbers in hill stations, the Union Health Ministry on Tuesday said that people were indulging in 'revenge travel'. "People in hill stations and markets are roaming around without masks and social distancing. This will create a situation where our gains (over the pandemic) will be nullified," said Health Ministry Joint Secretary Lav Agarwal.

Maharashtra Assembly Speaker in-chair Bhaskar Jadhav on Monday suspended 12 BJP MLAs from the House for a year, over alleged unruly behaviour. The Speaker alleged that the MLAs entered his cabin and "abused" him using "unparliamentary language" in front of Leader of Opposition Devendra Fadnavis. Dismissing the allegation as "false", Fadnavis announced a boycott of the House proceedings.

The Srinagar district administration has banned the use, sale and possession of drones and other similar unmanned aerial vehicles after the recent attack at the IAF base in Jammu. It further stated that "persons already having the drone cameras/similar kind of unmanned aerial vehicles in their possession shall ground the same in the local police station under proper receipt".

• Swimming caps designed for Black athletes with natural hair created by a Black-owned brand has been banned from Olympics. International Swimming Federation said the caps did not fit "the natural form of the head". "We believe that it confirms a lack of diversity in (the sport)," Danielle Obe, the founding member of the Black Swimming Association said.

The Uttar Pradesh government on Friday further relaxed COVID-19 curbs and allowed multiplexes, cinema halls, gyms and sports stadiums to open from Monday (July 5) onwards. However, all these establishments will have to comply with COVID-19 protocols. The decision was taken during a meeting with Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on Friday.

This comes after Purvi turned an approver in the money laundering case against Nirav. ED said Purvi intimated it about the bank account that Nirav opened in her name

Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman announced eight COVID-19 relief measures, four of which are new. These include a 1.1 lakh-crore loan guarantee scheme for affected sectors, including 50,000 crore for health sector. Credit guarantee scheme for 25 lakh people through MFIs and assistance to 11,000 people in tourism was announced. The first 5 lakh tourist visas will be issued for free.

Over 1.3 lakh people were fined for not wearing face masks in public places in Delhi between June 19 and 26 amid unlock, Delhi Police said. Over 1.53 lakh challans were issued for violation of COVID-19 norms last week. "A few were even booked under relevant sections of IPC and Epidemic Diseases Act," Delhi Police Additional PRO Anil Mittal said.
