“Both my parents were part-time tailor; it was not easy to explain them about my passion for art. For them, art education to be a professional artist was unheard of. In 2006, I received the 48th Indian National Exhibition of Art Award by Lalit Kala Akadami, New Delhi. The award did not change the way I work. It simply made people more aware and gave my work a certain validation,” reckons Ramchandra Kharatmal. Ramchandra has been experimenting extensively with the quilt
motif in his works. His national award winning work, Auto Raja, is also inspired from this motif. Now settled in Pune, Ramchandra grew up in a large joint family in a Solapur, Maharashtra.
The faint memories of his surroundings from his childhood are still preserved in the quilts
that are hand-woven by his grandmother. For Ramchandra, patch by
patch, stitched together, the Quilt is symbolic of memories, preserved over the years.
Few life-changing and cherished incidents are woven into quilt.
