Our cover feature celebrates a remarkable milestone – 25 years of innovative design excellence by Archana and Rupesh Baid of And Design Co. As they mark this significant anniversary, the power couple is poised for an exciting new chapter: welcoming their daughter, Sia Baid, to the practice. We delve into their inspiring journey, exploring the secrets behind their enduring success and the fresh perspectives that Sia brings to the table. And as usual, we showcase some of India’s most outstanding spaces, carefully curated from across the nation. Additionally, our ‘Design Lexicon’ section offers predictions from our team, highlighting the trends poised to redefine the design landscape in 2025. Yet another feature is the insightful conversation with Architect Rahul Kadri, who offers a nuanced perspective  on the architect’s pivotal role in shaping urban landscapes and planning sustainable cities.

In this Issue, we take you to spaces that are rousing examples of institutional architecture. Designed by some of the most celebrated names in the industry—Morphogenesis, Archohm, Thirdspace Architecture Studio—to name a few, these spaces stand as beacons of change when it comes to architecture of institutions. It’s not just about designing a structure; it’s about creating a space that’s conducive to collaboration, problem-solving and emotional well-being. In our cover feature, we speak to the custodians of The Design Village, a multidisciplinary design college envisioned by Noida-based architectural firm Archohm, about the dynamics of design pedagogy. This year, The Design Village completes a decade. And we celebrate this milestone with them.

We travelled to 5 cities to meet these visionaries in their domain, where they create and envision the spaces that exude inimitable style and elegance. The feature is a deep dive into not just their designs and practices, but also gives you an understanding of their enigmatic personalities. These visionaries are disrupting the luxury landscape of India.

In our cover feature, we speak to architects Vijaya Bhargav and Arnab Ghosh, Founders, OSTRACA. For over 16 years, the dynamic duo has been instrumental in revolutionising the often-overlooked realm of corporate interiors. The Issue features some really interesting office spaces—from a biophilic office designed by Meena Murthy Kakkar of Envisage, to a quirky space by Ali Baldiwala and a mixed-use development by Studio Lotus. It’s interesting to note how corporate spaces have evolved in recent years, especially after the pandemic. From being just a functional space to designing human-centric, versatile spaces, the office landscape is unrecognisable from what we have now. And it will continue to adapt and evolve. The world of design is evolving, and we are here to document this constant evolution of the design landscape.

In this Issue, we decode the nuances of interior design and take you to some of the most interesting homes in the country. In our special feature on wellness architecture, we talk about the synergy between the built and the unbuilt, and the art of creating spaces that intuitively foster relaxation and harmony. In our cover feature, we sit down with designer Shilpi Sonar, architect Satyadeep Sonar and Arpita Sonar for a candid chat on creating a legacy through design—we explore the minds behind this extraordinary family of designers.

In this Issue, we dissect the notion of sustainability. We talk to experts and take you to spaces that stand as templates for sustainable design. Cloud 9 Sports Centre in China envisioned by MAD Architects exhibits the synergy between technology and sustainability, the Ecove Centre for Vocational Empowerment by SEZA Architects and the Polycab Experience Centre stand as beacons of social sustainability. We also spoke to architect Rahul Bhushan of North on the importance of vernacular architecture, and his intuitive architectural journey. And now, our cover feature. Landscape architect Kunal Maniar needs no introduction. It’s one thing to design a space, but it’s quite something to be able to collaborate with nature. In a candid conversation with A+D, he spoke about his inspirations, his design philosophy and his thoughts on sustainability. We met at one of his magical green spaces in Alibaug, amidst bougainvillea creepers, palm trees and frangipanis, with the landscape meandering in and out of the built environment.

In this Issue, we delve deeper into the nuances of luxury and into the enchanting and exclusive realm of bespoke luxury, into the shifting meaning of luxury, exploring its roots and essence in an ever-changing world. In our cover feature, we speak to Simran Boparai, the visionary founder of her eponymous practice Simran Boparai Archtelier, who has deftly tapped into the luxury market. Simran’s residential projects are a study in opulence and grandeur. In an in-depth interview, the visionary designer talks about her inspirations and her journey through design.

We thought this Issue would be befitting to pay homage to the designers and architects who paved the way for the younger generation. “As we commemorate Women’s Day, we pay tribute to the formidable Indian women architects and designers who courageously redefined possibilities in a male-dominated field,” says Kashish Kaushal in her feature. It’s because of them that we can now proclaim, “It’s a women’s world.” Their wisdom, their vision and their inspiring journeys—there’s a lot to learn, imbibe and implement.

In this Issue, we shift our focus to integrated cities, real estate and infrastructure projects. Any built structure leaves an impact on the identity of the city. However, larger projects define the design identity of the city. We take you to some of the most interesting projects around the world. Envisioned by the Bjarke Ingels Group, the master plan of Mindfulness City, Gelephu, Bhutan, integrates Bhutan’s culture, the Gross National Happiness Index (GNH) principles, and the country’s spiritual heritage. Yet another interesting project is the Jiaxing Train Station by MAD Architects in Shanghai. The project replaces a dysfunctional train station. The project breaks away from the common pursuit of grandiose monumental buildings and makes them urban public spaces with transport functions, natural ecology and cultural life. We are also featuring Arunyam by Rahul Kari, a second home project that serves as a blueprint for sustainable architecture.

We dedicate the first Issue of the year to the monuments of the future—museums, airports, city centres, parks—spaces that are designed and built for the public. In the cover feature, we get you up close and personal with architect Raman Sikka of SAA, New Delhi. With over three decades of practice, and an extremely diverse portfolio, Raman Sikka is one of the architects who’s redefining the design identity of India. From the Pradhanmantri Sangrahalaya to the much-anticipated World Trade Centre, he certainly has an enviable portfolio. 
And yes, as usual, we bring to you an excellent bouquet of projects by some of the biggest names in the industry—Patrik Schumacher of Zaha Hadid Architects, Winy Maas of MVRDV, Sonali Bhagwati and Sohrab Dalal and Ravi Sarangan of Edifice.

This Issue, we reached out to the young icons of the world of design to understand their perspective on the future of design. Unconventional materials, new technology, innovative building methods…there’s a lot brewing in the world of design. We give you a precursor of sorts! 
Our cover star needs no introduction! Eclectic, charismatic, quirky, idiosyncratic, and a genius of a designer; Sanjyt Syngh is unapologetically himself! There’s nothing subtle about his designs; he is bold and audacious, and we love that about him! In a candid conversation with Kashish Kaushal, he decodes his intriguing style of design and spaces.

Architecture defines the personality of a space, and the built identity of its context and the interiors—the colours, the textures, the furniture and the accents—brings in the design narrative. This Issue, we turn our focus to interiors—the elements that make a house a home! We take you to fabulously curated spaces by some of the most sought-after names in the industry.  
We’ve often pondered on the role of an interior stylist. Is it just about giving the finishing touches to a space, or is it a lot more layered and complex? This Issue, we give you a glimpse into the world of interior stylists. We interviewed four exceptionally talented stylists to understand the nuances and responsibilities of being an interior stylist.

For our cover feature, we spoke to the minds behind this behemoth of a project Surat Diamond Bourse — Sonali and Manit Rastogi. While the design is something we all knew about, this conversation revealed the process that went behind designing an office space for not an individual or an organisation but a community. What stood out was the democratic approach to design, and their commitment to sustainability. In that sense, the Surat Diamond Bourse sets a benchmark for sustainable and responsible building practices.  Yet another compelling read is Ankita Rathod’s feature on collaborations in design. Through her feature, she captures that magic that ensues when two or more creative minds collaborate to create something new, in a completely different typology. And for those looking for interesting gifts for the festive season, Kashish has done half your job! Finally, we take you to some of the most stylish and opulent spaces in the country and beyond. With this Issue we are thrilled to present the first edition of Architecture+Design Young Icons. It’s time to celebrate the future of design, isn’t it?

The Issue is dedicated to the architectural marvels of the Middle East. Concepts, technology and spaces that push the envelope when it comes to innovation. The National Museum of Qatar in Doha, the gravity-defying BEAAH Headquarters in Abu Dhabi by Zaha Hadid Architects, Maraya in AlUla, the upcoming teamLab Phenomena, a unique immersive experience in Abu Dhabi—spaces waiting to be explored and admired. The Middle East is certainly proving to be an experimental ground for architects and designers. There’s so much more to write about and to visit.

This Issue has been tremendously interesting to collate. Right from the research to the in-depth conversations with the architects, to the writing of the pieces, it’s been a learning experience. Museums and other such cultural spaces essentially become the identity of the city, the state and the country. Take for instance, The Louvre in Paris, The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao in Spain, these museums are integral parts of the identity of the city. India still has a long way to go. But with museums like Smritivan, MAP, Museum of Socialism…it’s only a matter of time.

In this Issue, we focus on residential architecture. Unabashedly opulent, idiosyncratic, rustic, cosy, futuristic—we bring you an eclectic mix of styles and typologies. Krish Kothari’s opulent creation, Karan Desai’s surreal manifestation of the client’s brief, AKDA’s thoughtful response to a restriction on site, all spaces that urge you to explore and admire.
In our cover feature, we speak to the young and dynamic design duo Shreenu and Ranjeet Mukherjee of The Vrindavan Project—a boutique design studio based in Gurugram. For the cover shoot, we travelled to Sohna, on the outskirts of Delhi, to one of their ongoing sites. There’s something surreal about witnessing a dream transitioning to reality...brick by brick.

Sustainability is not just about local materials, renewable energy and energy efficiency. One should understand the connections between the environment, society and the economy. I reiterate, sustainability should permeate all aspects of our day-to-day lives. In that sense, one should understand the three pillars of sustainability: • Environmental Sustainability • Economical Sustainability • Social Sustainability. And all the projects we have featured in this Issue have ensured that they place a minimum impact on the environment. On our cover, we feature the very dynamic architect Dr Ponni M. Concessao of Oscar, Ponni & Rahul Architects. Her magnum opus, the Dr. B.R. Ambedkar Telangana State Secretariat, was recently inaugurated; that also made her the first woman architect in India to have designed a state secretariat.

For the anniversary special, it only made sense that we bring back the tradition of being the voice of the industry. We asked them, can design change the world? And we were met with a resounding ‘yes’. In this issue, we present to you thought-provoking essays by the biggest names in the industry. We also raise a toast to 40 emerging architects, designers and practices of India. Creatives who have made a difference in their own way, and are changing the way we live, one space at a time. We sign off with an interesting segment on the rules of design from the experts themselves!

In this Issue, we focus on institutional architecture, and we take you to some of the most intelligently designed spaces of learning. To start with, the Wuhan Library in China, designed by MVRDV in collaboration with UAD. It’s interesting to know that even in this age of digitisation, communities and governments are still investing in libraries. In our cover feature, we talk to yet another young and dynamic architect who’s shaping the future of Indian architecture. In an in-depth interview, architect Dinesh Panwar of Urbanscapes takes us through his journey in design, and talks about how sustainability is no longer a choice, but the need of the hour.

This Issue, we feature two distinct aspects of design—personal spaces and public spaces. During the pandemic, and after, the focus shifted to our homes, while at the same time, we realised the importance and relevance of well-designed public spaces. There’s another aspect that came to the fore during the pandemic—a new crop of designers and architects who had gradually started making their presence felt in the Indian design scape. On the cover, we feature power couple Akash and Poonam Mehta of AMPM Designs. The rest of the Issue is dedicated to public architecture. Each project that we have featured in this Issue gives us valuable learnings in design. How the architecture of the space should co-exist with nature, and have a lasting impact on the user, the inhabitant, and its context.

In our cover feature, we talk to architect Arun Sharma, Founder, Atrey Associates about balancing luxury and sustainability. It’s a difficult balance to achieve. But through his sculptural creations, Arun finds a way to strike the right balance. The rest of the Issue is dedicated to retail and commercial spaces. There’s a marked difference in designing residential spaces and commercial spaces. In residential spaces one knows exactly whom you are designing for, which certainly is not the case in commercial and retail spaces. One has to design keeping in mind different demographics and multiple functions. We take you to some of the most interesting, playful, thoughtful spaces. This Issue is dedicated to spaces, concepts and plans that address the need to change. Innovation is not just about technology, innovation is about finding the best solution with respect to the situation, and with the means available. Going back to what Vinu Daniel, who adheres to the Gandhian philosophy of building within five-mile radius, says,“Unfortunately when I looked within my five-mile radius, all I found was waste. And so I started building with waste.” In this Issue, we feature architects who have made a difference with their innovative thinking, and spaces that are prototypes for the future.

In this Issue, our Guest Editor, Ar. Sourabh Gupta brings together interviews, opinion pieces, critiques and commentaries by some of the most respected names in the industry. In his insightful column, Architect Madhav Raman, Founder, Anagram Architects comments on the state of architecture in India and presents some stark realities. Designer Mridu Sahai Patnaik, Co-founder, The Design Village, in her interview with Chirstoph Felger, Partner, David Chipperfield Architects gives us an insight into the workings of one of the largest, most acclaimed architectural firms globally. Architect Akansha A Thapa takes us to the Lego Museum, while architect Mudita Pasari talks about architectural pedagogy.

In this Issue, we shine the spotlight on architecture and design in the hospitality segment. From Ariane Thakore Ginwala’s rustic approach, Minnie Bhatt’s eclectic style, Rudraksh Charan’s ode to the context, to Sanchit Arora’s bold, contemporary narrative, we bring to you, spaces that are conceptualised for the people.  On our cover is interior designer Amit Portal, Founder, IPIPL - a multidisciplinary design firm based in Mumbai. With over 20 years of experience in the industry, Porwal has now established his distinct approach to design — that of relaxed sophistication.

In this Issue, we take you to some of the most opulently designed spaces by Ajay Arya, Abhigyan Neogi, Asha Sairam, Shivani Gupta & Ayush Mittal and Vihar Fadia. Talking about spaces of learning, the pandemic undoubtedly proved the importance of human interaction and spaces that facilitated interactive learning. Apart from fostering a sense of ownership, design for learning spaces should also encourage collaboration, facilitate interaction, and contribute to the overall development of the student.

This Issue, we focus on the architecture of housing — affordable housing, residential townships, mixed-use developments — the entire gamut. From Manglam Maplewoods, a luxury farmhouse project in Jaipur to a mixed-use development by MVRDV, the Issue brings to you some of the most judiciously planned, and thoughtfully designed projects in the world. As usual, we have our edit of gorgeous homes.

In this Issue we’ve tried to bring to the various interpretations of luxury when it comes to spaces, more specifically residences. The luxury of space, the inimitable feeling of being close to nature, the ease that comes with technology, the feeling of decadence, the most exquisite designs — the residences we feature this Issue each comes with a different meaning of luxury.
