In this edition, we wanted to celebrate the idea of women — considering we would arrive in March, a month dedicated to women (with March 8 being observed as International Women’s Day) — but we were certain about two things — one, we weren’t going to reminisce women from an era bygone, two, we
were definitely not going to feature women from mythology. What then? The Do-ers is a celebration of women in the arts, who do, as their bosses say, or as their arts institutions demand of them. It is a celebration of their passion, commitment, earnestness, longevity, loyalty…

Our cover photo and the aesthetic of the edition, has been inspired by Madhubani paintings and is our own humble attempt to showcase women who are undoubtedly the best when it comes to the ‘balancing’ act!

We decided to celebrate Aalaap’s third anniversary edition with a book straightforwardly titled Reflections. In its purpose, the magazine is an attempt to re-visit, re-look, re-view, and as a result, re-create a book whose core is unshaken — a commentary magazine with varied points of view on a specific subject — but whose final form, is a culmination of the many ideas, avenues and journeys that the
magazine has travelled, on its own, charting its own course, bringing into its fold, voices
who are authorities in their own right, whose points of view matter, and a great deal.

Between the Lines, as our edition is titled, is a series of short, very personal sketches by those who inhabit the dynamic and very gratifying world of theatre. Our brief to the people you will meet here — 45, to be exact — was simple, and straightforward. We only asked them to share with us one story/script closely
linked to the stage and from their long, and short journeys in theatre. We say short because, as always, the newbie in theatre will share pages with the nuanced.

In its presentation, quirky, abstract illustrations created by the design team who allowed their imagination free play to interpret Between the Lines, you will read many stories — gripping, moving, sensational, poignant — by an array of theatre workers; people who take pride in belonging to a space that has very warmly allowed them to make it their own… Different stories will evoke different emotions but every sketch sparkles with a sheen of its own…

In these mini-stories interspersed freely with the essays, you will meet a handful of people, all of whom are integral to the context of music in classical dance. To write these stories, we invited dancers from across Chennai and India, to tell us what makes these artistes, top-of-mind recall in a space that has a problem of plenty. Inter-connectedness is the artery of this edition that we have aptly called
The Music of Dance & Vice Versa.

In a simple question and answer format,  young singers, musicians, songwriters – not so young in terms of talent and versatility – responded to Aalaap's questionnaire that attempts very simply to track their trajectory in the world of playback along with addressing specifically their background in the classical/folk form and the what, why, how of the crossover!

In this edition, Dear Diary: Because Memories Matter, the look of the book, as you will notice, is inspired by the type-writer; its feel, is a sense of the past, of nostalgia. From our perspective, the book allowed artistes to jog their memory and identify a moment, an episode, an event, all arts-related, and share with us why that moment will remain with them, perhaps for a long time to come. For readers, the book is a treasure trove of memories, enabling the possibility of accessing an artiste, and getting a sense of who they are, when the curtains come down.

Curators - primarily from Madras — and many from outside have been a source of inspiration for this edition of Aalaap. Envisaged —and rather quirkily — by Aalaap’s design and layout team, the visual on the cover is a metaphor for the idea of festivals and platforms that curators design and delineate, bringing into their fold, an assortment of people and providing them an experience that is of value, both individually and to society as a whole.

Brandon Staton’s Blog, an attempt to “create an exhaustive catalogue of New York city’s inhabitants”, is the inspiration behind Aalaap’s very special edition – Humans of the Arts (HOTA). Visually, the attempt has been to capture and celebrate the idea of natural-ness and candidness of artistes. Artistes with several accolades freely share space with the younger crop, giving a glimpse of who they are off the stage.

Aalaap’s edition, Arts Enablers, is inspired from that context, to coincide with the school calendar.  An attempt has been made to identify and recognise an array of adjectives that are all in a sense, allied to the idea of academics. From the idea of learning – and learning the performing arts – this edition has grown into chronicling voices of a handful of very committed knowledge-givers. These knowledge-givers, who have, dedicated their time, energy, and their very lives, to the idea of teaching and training in the performing arts, are also, important for they are seekers, doers, enablers, facilitators.

Travel Disc, Aalaap’s in-house record,  has been inspired by travel and its many, varied tales. The final, finished product, is an assorted album comprising a vivacious list - 10 fascinating narratives by artistes (dancers, musicians, theatre people, photographers) - all drawing from the idea of journeys – literal, metaphorical, creative, abstract.

Stree-Centric is dedicated solely and wholly to women. An editorial framework that attempts to blend seamlessly, the idea of continuity in the context of women, has been chalked out. Stree-Centric freely flows from moments of nostalgia to nuggets in mythology to living, breathing, dynamic women who are thinking, travelling, and shaping the course of their life and that of the arts. The book journeys three destinations – legends, women characters from mythology and of course, women in the now.

Behind-The-Scenes,  Aalaap’s first book, is inspired from the world of Productions. The storyboard has metamorphosed into a series of standalone episodic, anecdotal and perspective-based shorts that tell a different story. With the compilation also inspired by cinema, the mini stories on productions are anchored by eleven artistes from across India and the world.
