The World Gold Council’s latest Gold Demand Trends report reveals that gold benefited from record central bank buying in the first half of the year and was supported by healthy investment markets and resilient jewellery demand. Gold demand (excluding OTC) dropped by 2% y/y to 921t during Q2, although total demand (inclusive of OTC) was up 7% y/y, pointing to a solid gold market globally.  

Second quarter central bank demand was down y/y to 103t, primarily driven by net sales in Turkey due to country-specific political and economic circumstances. However, central banks bought a first half record amount of 387t, and quarterly demand is in line with the longer-term positive trend – indicating that official sector buying should remain strong throughout the year.

Union Minister Piyush Goyal felicitates top exporters at the 49th India Gem & Jewellery Awards (IGJA)

The Gem and Jewellery Export Promotion Council (GJEPC) organised the 49th edition of the India Gem and Jewellery Awards (IGJA) in Mumbai. Chief Guest Piyush Goyal Minister for Commerce and Industry, Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution and Textiles, Government of India, felicitated 27 top Gem and Jewellery exporters during the award ceremony. Welcoming all the dignitaries, Vipul Shah, Chairman, GJEPC, congratulated Union Minister Piyush Goyal for the monumental achievement of $770 billion in aggregate exports combining both merchandise and services from India for the financial year 2022-23.

In a grand event held in Mumbai, the Gem and Jewellery Export Promotion Council of India (GJEPC) unveiled the winners of the highly anticipated 6th edition of Artisan Awards 2023, the country’s esteemed jewellery design competition. This prestigious event, organized by GJEPC, showcased the exceptional talent and creativity of jewellery designers from across the nation and around the world.

Consumers showed up to the shops and purchased jewellery despite hiked jewellery prices during Akshaya Tritiya

Akshaya Tritiya is considered an auspicious occasion to buy gold as it is believed to bring prosperity and good luck. However, this year, during this season the jewellers were assuming that sales of the jewellery will not be as expected since the gold prices hover above Rs 60,000 per 10 gram; but unexpectedly it turned out to be good one as on the day of Akshaya Tritiya despite heavy gold prices consumers showed up to the shops and purchased jewellery. Additionaly, with the rising gold prices the demand for the light-weight jewellery was anticipated. 

3rd Edition of “India Gem and Jewellery Show (GJS)” concludes with commendable business of 60 to 80 tons even with increased Gold Price. More than 15,000 domestic and International buyers contributed the success of GJS with the business of 60 to 80 tons in this show.

Jewellery industry shared mixed reactions to Union Budget 2023. While most of the players applauded the well-balanced Budget but the major demand of the sector to reduce the import duty on gold was not addressed by Finance Minister. The reduction in gold duty in this Budget was a big expectation, which has severely hampered the industry and has encouraged smuggling and grey market.  The Budget boosted the prospects for lab grown diamonds and signalled possibilities that the industry could ride on this growth opportunity.

Union Budget 2023-24: GJEPC seeks jewellery repair policy to make India a global outsourcing service centre and hub

For the Union Budget 2023-24, GJEPC has recommended a series of suggestions across verticals of gem and jewellery (G&J), which would help in propelling the exports from the sector and achieve the goal of USD 55 billion in G&J exports by 2025. GJEPC has sought reduction in Import Duty on gold, silver and platinum to 4% as a prime recommendation in their wishlist to the Government of India. GJEPC believes that this import duty is draining off the capital from the exporters and is the generator of economic malpractices of all kind.

IIJS Signature is India’s top-of-the-line jewellery show by the GJEPC.

This time, IIJS Signature will be as large as the IIJS Premiere, which is usually held in August each year. Given the bigger format of the show, Signature has been extended to 5 days instead of 4, so that visitors and exhibitors are not hard-pressed for time to cover the entire show floor. IIJS Signature will accommodate more than 1300 exhibitors spread over 2400+ booths.

India’s robust gem and jewellery export performance in the first six months of the financial year 2022-23 has helped to maintain growth for the period April to October 2022, despite a sharp dip in exports in the month of October 2022. The decline in exports in the month of October or November is a seasonal trend consistent with previous years as manufacturing activities are either limited or units are closed because of the Diwali season. Traditionally, a spike in exports is seen once again post the Diwali holiday period. 

The World Gold Council’s latest Gold Demand Trends report reveals that gold demand (excluding OTC) in the third quarter of 2022 hit 1,181 tonnes, up 28% year-on-year. Strong demand pushed the year-to-date total to its pre-COVID levels. Gold demand was bolstered by consumers and central banks, although there was a notable contraction in investment demand.

India Jewellery Retail Market Moving Towards Robust, Organised Eco-System; Chain Store Share Rises To 35%: WGC Report

The World Gold Council launched a report titled ‘Jewellery market structure’, as part of a series of in-depth analysis on the Indian gold market. The report highlights a notable shift in India’s gold jewellery market over the past few years, catalysed by changes in consumer behaviour and government regulations. While small independent retailers still dominate the landscape, the market share of chain stores (national and regional) has increased steadily over the last decade. In contrast to the retail jewellery trade, changes at the manufacturing level have been relatively slower but as the market continues to develop, organised retail and manufacturing operations are well-poised to see their market share grow.

For the cumulative period of April – September 2022, the overall gross exports of gem & jewellery witnessed a growth of 12.82% to Rs.  161545.06 crores (6.31% in dollar terms to US$ 20580.11 million) as compared to Rs. 143187.15 crores (US$ 19359.01 million) for the same period last year. With this the gem & jewellery sector has managed to achieve 45% of the total export target of USD 45.7 billion for the year 2022-23.

IIJS Premiere 2022, the most coveted show of the year, is all set to welcome buyers and visitors from across India and different parts of the world from 4th to 8th August 2022 at Bombay Exhibition Centre, Goregaon, Mumbai. GST Council, in its 47th meeting held on 28th and  29th June 2022, has come up with revisions in GST rates for a series of products. With regards cut & polished diamonds, the GST has been increased from 0.25% to 1.5% (effective 18th July 2022), which the diamond sector has welcomed as it resolves their issue of ITC accumulation being faced on account of inverted duty under GST Regime.

The Natural Diamond Council Launches The Second Edition Of Their Jewellery Trend Report

The Natural Diamond Council and United Arab Emirates launched the second edition of the jewellery trend report offering insights and predictions on the natural diamond jewellery that is set to make statements in 2022. NDC dedicated towards increasing transparency and upholding the integrity of the modern natural diamond industry, announced a collaboration with Malabar Gold & Diamonds, Jawhara Jewellery, and La Marquise Jewellery – three of the leading jewellers in UAE to advocate the ‘Natural Diamond Dream.’

India’s rough imports rose 14% to $1.43 billion in May as the country sought to offset the decline in Russian rough supply. Polished exports grew 4% year-on-year to $2.09 billion, according to the data from Gem and Jewellery Export Promotion Council. Both measures had declined in April. The government is targeting 17% growth in all gem and jewellery exports in the current fiscal year that ends March 31,2023.

Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement to benefit the G&J industry the most. CEPA to help achieve the set target of USD 52 billion G&J exports in FY 2022-23

The 14th edition of IIJS Signature 2022, organised by the Gem & Jewellery Export Promotion Council (GJEPC) at the Bombay Exhibition Centre, NESCO, Mumbai, concluded successfully on 21st February. 

The show witnessed nearly 950 exhibitors who occupied 1,470 booths spread across four exhibition halls. There were more than 17242 visitors, including 571 international visitors and delegations from USA, UAE, Egypt, Nepal, Uzbekistan, and Bangladesh. IIJS Signature 2022 has generated an estimated business of Rs. 5000 Crore.

Jewellery trade bodies urge FM to reduce GST rate and Import duty on gold , increase PAN card limit to Rs 5 lakh in Budget 2022

As we entered in the new year, it has hit us again with the new variant Omicron and once again has halt the industry to certain extent. However, the jewellery industry is going on and is all set to put forth their demand to the FM (Finance Minister) in the upcoming Budget 2022-2023 in terms of making the jewellery industry much better.  

Very recently the jewellery industry trade bodies urge FM to reduce GST rate and import duty on gold, and also increase PAN card limit to Rs 5 lakh in Budget 2022. 
GJC has sought to reduce the GST rate on jewellery to 1.25 per cent from 3 per cent now in the upcoming Budget.

It also has urged the FM to raise the PAN card limit from Rs 2 lakh to Rs 5 lakh citing that many households in rural India do not hold PAN cards and face difficulty in arranging minimum required jewellery in times of need especially post-pandemic. On the other hand, GJEPC proposes a series of measures as part of G&J Packages for the upcoming Budget for fiscal year 2022-23.

Exhibitions have bounced back after a very long halt. IIJS Signature was the first mega event that took place post pandemic and its success with new venue was one of the turning point. From then onwards many exhibitions have taken place and further more are set to take place. However, too many exhibitions are boon or bane will be explained in our exclusive coverstory.
 
The World Gold Council (WGC) launched a report titled ‘Bullion Trade in India’, as part of a series of in-depth analysis on the Indian gold market. The report highlights how, with very little mining and modest levels of recycling, India is heavily reliant on bullion imports to meet its domestic demand. Indian official imports have continued to grow despite high import duty, with official imports averaging 760 tonnes since the first duty hike in 2012.

Festive cheer for jewellers as Diwali brings bumper sales, around 55 tonnes of gold sold

It was a big relief after a long time to see vibrancy bouncing back in the jewellery market this Diwali as 55 tonnes of gold valued 20,000 crore is sold this festive season as per IBJA data. However, last year and the previous the gold consumption was lower but this year it has bettered and made a good comeback comparatively. IBJA’s data showed that the average price of gold of 24-carat purity (999 purity) on the day of Dhanteras 2021 was over Rs 49,000 per 10 grams (with GST) which was lower than last year’s price of around Rs 55,000 per 10 grams (with GST). Taking advantage of this, the buyers splurged on their favourite jewellery obviously due to slightly dipped gold prices and the lifts on restrictions. 2021 festive saw retailers showering buyers with attractive offers on jewellery leading to fair demand and sale which created a wave of positive sentiments in the jewellery industry.

In addition, to provide timely boost to the industry for the forthcoming festive and wedding seasons associations are organising many major shows like IIJS Signature and Jaipur Jewellery Show  (JJS) in times ahead.

Digital Gold : A new age investment

While digital purchase has gold lovers many major jewellery brands have launched Digital Gold with which the customers can purchase Jewellery with flexibility, convenience and secured. In India Digital Gold is sold by firms like MMTC - PAMP, Augmont Goldtech, and Digital Gold India (Safegold) and they have tied-up with service providers like Google Pay, Amazon etc. to sell Digital Gold via their websites. Very recently major brands are also offering digital gold through similar tie up. 

‘Gemstones are one of the precious gifts by nature’. The jewels and adornments created from the gemstones not only enhance the style statement but also showcases the power, prosperity, and glory of the person owning it. There is a huge demand for India’s Gems and jewels all over the world. India’s gems and jewelry sector is one of the largest in the world, contributing 29 percent to global jewelry consumption. The market size is expected to grow by US$103.06 billion during 2019-2023. We have a special report on this. 

IIJS Premiere 2021 sparked economic revival with estimated $6.75 billion 
(Rs. 50,000 crore ) worth business generated.

The recently concluded 37th edition of IIJS Premiere, its first edition in Bengaluru, not only generated a high volume of business, it aided local hospitality businesses with many hotels in the area reporting 100% occupancy, the GJEPC reported on its website. The trade show heralded a new phase of economic revival in the fine jewellery industry, thanks to participation from over 1,300 exhibitors and around 21,000 visitors (including over 300 international buyers), according to the GJEPC.  

“The success of IIJS Premiere 2021 is a clear indication that the gem and jewellery industry has shrugged off the pandemic’s effects on the sector and the economy at large,” said the GJEPC in a statement.

Industry demands rollback of HUID

The jewellery industry is upset with the government’s new hallmarking rules, despite being introduced after several postponements and many rounds of dialogues with industry stakeholders. Although jewellery industry has welcomed the move but they are against HUID.

Mandatory Hallmarking of Gold Jewellery Kick Starts in a phased manner, initially will be implemented in 256 districts of the country.   

Jewellery industry express happiness as their concerns were addressed and various exemptions were granted by the Govt. 

Based on the extensive consultations by the Consumer Affairs Minister Piyush Goel with the Expert Committee consisting of various stakeholders of Jewellery industry , it was decided to initiate the Mandatory Hallmarking from 16th June onward in 256 districts, which have assaying marking centres along with few exemptions. The industry concerns were addressed and clarified in great detail in the meeting.

Gems & Jewellery Industry comes forward to help fight the second wave of COVID -19

Gem and jewellery industry has been at the forefront of the fight against the pandemic, with a vicious second wave of coronavirus currently gripping the country. From large and medium Corporate Jewellers to small and big associations everyone is coming forward to extend help in its own unique way.

The Centre has further extended the deadline for mandatory hallmarking of gold jewellery and artefacts by a fortnight till June 15 in view of the COVID-19 pandemic. The decision in this regard was taken at a meeting chaired by Consumer Affairs Minister Piyush Goyal. Earlier it was expected to be implemented from 1 June 2021. In view of Covid, the government accepted the request of stakeholders to give jewellers some more time to get prepared for implementation and resolve issues
