Magazine Description

In this issue

Desh 17 June, 2021 issue features an unpublished essay on the Bombay plague epidemic of 1896 by Jatindra Kumar Sen— artist, illustrator of Rajshekhar Basu’s stories and a writer in his own right. Deserted roads, migrant workers’ exodus, fears of the disease spreading in congested areas— scenes that have played out in the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic bear eerie, uncanny resonances to what life was like when the bubonic plague hit Bombay more than a century ago. The issue also comprises an essay on the evolution of chariots and chariot wars by Saikat Basu. There is a travelogue on Italy written by Paramita Dasgupta. The issue carries other regular sections like the serialized nonfiction ‘Naxalbarinama’ by Ashim Chattopadhyay, the serialized novel ‘Lochandas Shabdakar’ by Bimal Lama, ‘Jiban Jerakam’ by Sumit Mitra, Mantabya, Granthalok, Shilpo Sanskriti, Galpo, Chithipatra, Seshkatha etc.
