May is the month of Mary and on page 13 of that edition of our magazine you can read more about this lovely devotion.  It is also a glorious month in the garden, as our gardening expert Deirdre Anglim outlines.  On Supporters’ Page we have a story about a charming little miracle-favour, attributed to Saint Martin, and sent in by a reader from Cork.  The Volunteer Organist,  by William Gray has a message as relevant today as it was in 1893 when it was first written.   Translated from the Spanish magazine, Amigos de Fray Martin, The Legend of Judas provides us with a chilling lesson in how good can become its opposite, evil.   In Echoes Patricia Hope writes about the phenomenon that is Riverdance and recounts her own personal experience of what was the real winner of the 1994 Eurovision Song Contest!   We have come to the final part of Fr Liam Walsh’s excellent in-depth delineation of the Mass. In the Editorial of our July edition of Saint Martin Magazine we are encouraged to invite the Prince of Peace into our hearts and certainly the world needs peace more than ever before.  Our Editor also has an article, The Road Less Travelled about the Dominican Nuns of the Siena Monastery, a much-loved presence in The Twenties in Drogheda.  If you thought that hospitals were a modern phenomenon then check out Fr Conor McDonough’s article on St Mary’s de Urso, the Old Abbey near the river Boyne, which used to be a hospital in the Middle Ages and stands as a testament to centuries of loving care.  The philosopher and theologian, St Thomas Aquinas was one of the greatest minds the Church has ever known.  He was also the author of many beautiful hymns in honour of Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament such as Tantum Ergo and O Salutaris Hostis.  Fr Shane Crombie looks at some of his thoughts in the context of devotion to the Real Presence.  Many of us are fascinated by the London Underground and in Echoes, Patricia Hope looks at how it all began and the birth of Rapid Transport.  Our Convert of the month is Thomas Merton, one of the great Spiritual Masters who was a Trappist monk and author of the bestselling book The Seven Storey Mountain .  Sometimes we overcomplicate prayer and can become anxious and doubtful.  In a lovely article, Fr Aelred Magee tells us how to pray simply, using the Jesus Prayer the brevity of which encompasses a depth of meaning. June is the month dedicated to the Sacred Heart and in a very insightful article Fr Shane Crombie delves deeply into what this lovely devotion really entails. Fr Crombie is also the subject of our Supporters Page where he writes fondly about how his grandparents fostered his faith.  Fr Martin Graham, the Administrator of the Cathedral Parish in Belfast, tells us about their shrine to the Saint in whose honour he was named.  G.K. Chesterton, the creator of the Fr Brown detective stories is our famous convert and has been credited with bringing at least thirty-four people into the Catholic Church, including the writer of the article! The Saint of the Month is Julia Rodzinska, a Dominican nun who was known as the ‘Mother of Orphans’ before her imprisonment by the Nazis in Stutthoff Concentration Camp.  Praised as an ‘Angel of Kindness’ for her deeds of love in the face of brutal inhumanity she gave her life helping others. Her story stands in stark contrast to the arrogance of the man who caused it all, Adolf Hitler, the subject of It Happened this Month.  Read about his first and last visit to Paris in the guise of tourist and conqueror.  In Echoes Patricia Hope writes about the evolution of the Zoo which has thankfully become more about the welfare of the animals than the entertainment of the idle rich. The cover of our May magazine features a photograph of the ordination to the deaconate of Brother Kellen Scott, OP at St Saviours in Dublin.  This image and the photo on page 1, which also celebrates Brother Anthony Kavanagh’ s special day was taken by Brother Sean Blackwell, OP.  May is of course Mary’s special month and in a lovely article Fr Colm Mannion OP looks at how it is through Mary that we become true disciples of Christ. ‘Holding on to her we are safe”.  Fr Aelred MacGee, OCSO continues the theme in a piece about St Barnard of Clairvaux who is known as Mary’s harpist.  Fr Aelred is a member of the order of Cistercians of the Strictest Observance, based in Our Lady of Bethlem Abbey in Portglenone, Co Antrim. In our new series on the Bible, Evangelium (which replaces Lectio), Brother Kellen Scott OP, draws parallels between the message of Our Lady of Fatima and the Presentation in the Temple.   It Happened this Month looks at the boyhood of Pope John Paul II who having lost his mother at a young age developed a deep devotion to Our Lady.  This month’s famous convert is Adrienne von Speyr, admired by both Pope John Paul II and Pope Emeritus Benedict.

March is the month when Irish people across the world celebrate our Patron, St Patrick.  If you struggle with prayer as many of us do, you will find Fr Conor McDonough’s article on St Patrick’s difficulties with these struggles enlightening.  March is also the month when Lent begins, that long preparation by the faithful for the celebration of Easter, the most important feast of all for Christians.  In a very interesting piece, Fr Shane Crombie looks at the origins of the ancient name of Lent.  Lovers of the Thriller Genre will be familiar with the writer Dean Koontz, but are you aware that he converted to Catholicism?  Maolsheachlann O’Ceallaig traces his journey to the Faith.  Four American Presidents have been assassinated while in office.  Ronald Reagan was fortunate not to share their fate.  Echoes examines what happened on 30 March 1981 and its aftermath. In February we celebrate the feast of the 1858 apparition of Our Lady of Lourdes. Fr Frank Downes OP writes about the enduring popularity of Lourdes and his own recent pilgrimage to this magnetic place. Fr Shane Crombie takes a look at the story behind the acclaimed film The Song of Bernadette, for which Jennifer Jones won an Oscar in 1943.  We all love Nursey Rhymes but there is a lot more to them than we might imagine.  In Echoes, Patricia Hope examines the fascinating background to some of these seemingly innocent little verses.  This month our famous convert is Sir Alec Guinness.  How did the man who once dabbled in the Tarot Cards become a Catholic?  Maolsheachlann O’Ceallaigh charts the great actor’s spiritual journey.  It Happened this Month traces the decline and fall of the woman who at her height was the potential ruler of three countries.  Mary Queen of Scots, the most tragic of Royals, has long gripped the imagination of writers and filmmakers.  Fr Michael Dunleavy OP continues his series on the significance of great Religious Art, and this month’s painter is Fra Angelico, the renowned Dominican artist of the Early Renaissance. January is the month which is dedicated to the Holy Name of Jesus and in his first Editorial of the New Year, Fr John Walsh encourages us to ‘turn every swear into a prayer’.  Sadly, in Ireland the name of our Saviour is frequently used in conversation by people who have no faith or respect; we can reverse this by saying “Jesus, I love you”, whenever we hear his name used in this manner.  In two insightful articles, Fr Conor McDonough and Fr Shane Crombie explain more about this devotion, its history and meaning.  Since the nineteenth century there have been groups advocating the restoration of the Jacobite succession to the throne of England.  It Happened this Month looks at the last of the Stuart Kings.  Malcolm Muggeridge is the second of our famous converts and in his series on great works of Art, Fr Michael Dunleavy studies Michelangelo’s masterpiece, the Pietà.  Our Life of St Martin series continues, and the Saint of the Month is Margaret of Hungary, the beautiful Princess who dedicated her life to God. The cover of our December magazine features a lovely Nativity scene in stained glass, the original of which can be seen in the Black Abbey in Kilkenny.  In his first Editorial, our new Spiritual Director, Fr John Walsh reminds us that ‘Christmas is only truly celebrated when it becomes a reality within us.”  Conor McDonough OP in the article ‘Christmas is Local’ looks at cribs in different parts of the world.  Their appearance may differ, but the message is always the same, ‘God is with us, wherever we are, wherever we’re from’. For Echoes, Patricia Hope continues the Christmas theme as she examines how the custom of giving gifts to relatives and friends first began. 
This year the Legion of Mary is celebrating a hundred years in existence and Colm Mannion OP writes about its founder, Frank Duff and his unwavering devotion to the Mother of God.
This month’s edition also sees the beginning of three new series of articles.  The first deals with the conversion to Catholicism of famous people and begins with the poet Gerard Manley Hopkins.  The second will look at some paintings by well-known artists, and the third is dedicated to the life of our dear patron St Martin. Matters Medical takes on a different aspect too as Brother Christopher Gault writes from his position as a man of medicine and a follower in the footsteps of St Martin.

In the November edition of our Saint Martin magazine, we bid a fond farewell to our Editor Fr Diarmuid Clifford O.P. who has retired after 34 years of dedicated service to St Martin and the work of the Apostolate.  We wish him well as we welcome the man who is taking over at the desk, Fr John Walsh O.P.  He is looking forward to working as the Director and asks for your prayers as he begins this apostolic work.  We celebrate the Feast of St Martin - 3rd Nov - a very special time for all of us here and all his wonderful and devoted supporters worldwide.  Our regular writer Vincent Travers OP is putting down his pen too after many years and you can read his last article which deals with the very difficult issue of suffering.  The topic is also tackled by Donagh O’Shea OP who reminds us that while past suffering is a wonderful topic of conversation, none of us want to hear about the suffering that is to come.  Palestine and Israel have been in conflict for so long now that it is sometimes difficult to recall where it all started.  It Happened this Month takes a closer look at this most contentious of struggles.  John Powell charts the life of the very distinctive artist, El Greco, John Scally writes about John McGahern’s successor, Donal Ryan and his latest novel ‘Strange Flowers ‘and Seamus Sloan tells us more about the Holy Wells of Ireland. On 1 October we celebrate the feast day of St Therese of Lisieux, the Patroness of the Missions.  She is featured on p4 of our magazine, while p13 is devoted to World Mission Sunday, observed this year on the 24th of the month.  This is a powerful annual reminder to us that we must be bearers of the faith to people on our doorstep and all others who cross our path in life.  Many of our older readers will fondly recall the romantic novelist, Annie M.P.Smithson.  John Gallagher writes about this extraordinary lady and Margaret Smith tells us about another exemplary woman, Sr Sara Salkahazi the Hungarian heroine, executed by the Nazis for her part in rescuing Jews during World War II.  Patricia Hope continues her series on Advertising in Echoes and in Lectio Divina Brendan Clifford OP considers the Cushite Woman and the lessons to be learned from her story. Donagh O’Shea OP examines envy, that little green devil and John Scally looks at the fascinating spirituality of the Celtic Christians. Our Saint of the Month is Dominic, the inspiring founder of the Order which St Martin loved and to which he devoted his life.  It Happened this Month recounts the heart-breaking story of Anne Frank, the young girl whose writings outlived the evil deeds of the Nazis, who murdered her and so many of her fellow Jews.  2021 has been designated the year of St Joseph and John Scally takes a fresh look at this quiet, gentle and most steadfast of men. June is the special month dedicated to the Sacred Heart and on page 13 of our magazine you will find a consideration of the significance of this lovely devotion.   The Pandemic has deprived us of many activities we took for granted.  One of these is theatre-going and in Echoes Patricia Hope traces the development of Musical Theatre from the early Greeks and Romans to Les Misērables as she looks forward to all the theatres opening up their doors again.  Eau de Cologne has been around for a very long time (Napoleon used a bottle a day!) but did you know that it remains a secret formula which was originally developed by the Carthusian monks?  Read more in Margaret Smith’s fascinating article.  In It Happened This Month Henry Peel OP writes about the most beloved of all the popes, John XXIII, now a saint.  Seamus Sloan in his very topical article, Who Should I Believe? warns us about the dangers of conspiracy theories and Donagh O’Shea, in An Evening Ritual advises us against being fooled by the notion of total freedom.  Those of you who are cat lovers will be intrigued by Helen Morgan’s engaging piece about these fascinating creatures.

What exactly is Christianity? How would you describe it if someone asked you to sum it up in a few words?  In his April article Fr Vincent Travers OP gives us an insight into a topic which we may sometimes take for granted.  It was at Easter that Christ fulfilled his mission as our Redeemer.  Fr Donagh O’Shea OP looks at the various meaning of the word ‘redeem’ and its significance for us as Christians at the most important moment in the history of the Church.  In Echoes Patricia Hope examines the development of that most beautiful and evocative of materials, silk.  It Happened this Month gives us an account of the American Civil War which in many ways has defined the history of the United States.  Our Saint of the Month is Catherine of Siena, one of only four female Doctors of the Church.  It is 109 years since the sinking of the Titanic, an event which still continues to capture our imaginations.  John Gallagher writes about a hero of that tragic time, Captain Arthur H. Rostron. When we talk about Christianity what do we really mean? John Scally offers a very personal appreciation of St Patrick and Bill McStay writes about a rather eccentric and colourful clergyman, Frederick Hervey.  Our Saint of the Month is Joseph, the man to whom God entrusted the care of His Son and Holy Mother.  Fr Liam Walsh O.P. continues his series on the Mass with much needed direction for these days when we are unable to gather together for worship as a congregation.  Seamus Sloan gives us an insight into Blasphemy and It Happened this Month looks at the history of the Salvation Army, or the Sally Army, as they are affectionately called! Echoes makes some interesting comparisons between the current Covid crisis and the Flu Pandemic of 1918-1920. Deirdre Powell looks at the importance of water in the Bible and if you have ever wondered about the differences between the Greek Orthodox Church and the Catholic Church check out our Questions & Answers. It Happened This Month looks at the most famous diarist of them all, Samuel Pepys who lived through the most turbulent of times in London’s history. Fr Brendan Clifford looks at the present pope’s Encyclical, Tuttti Fratelli (Brothers and Sisters All), and It Happened This Month traces the often fraught relationship between the Christians and the Chosen People. But with the arrival of Covid-19 and the mass pandemic, with sickness and death visiting every country throughout the world, we have given over some space in our magazine to an open letter from our editor. St Martin de Porres is the Patron Saint of the Sick and of Health Care Workers. - we pray that he will intercede and relieve us from this pandemic.

Happy Easter. This is such a wonderful time of the year with the arrival of Spring, celebrations for St Patrick's Day across the world and of course Easter time. The St Martin Magazine is read in over 40 countries across the world and more and more people are choosing to read it through their Magzter account. 
This month we celebrate the fact that Jesus is "Alive & Living in Us" by Fr Clifford O.P.  Fr Vincent Travers O.P. writes about the Risen Jesus - Our Constant Companion. Patricia Hope writes about the tradition of Eggs at Easter and their symbolism of re-birth. 
There is an amazing article written by Helen Morgan about "The Angel of Dien Bien Phu - Genevieve de Galard". Marie Therese Cryan, our own intrepid reporter writes an interesting article about the History of the Pro Cathedral in Dublin. 
I hope you continue to enjoy reading our insightful and entertaining articles each month.

In this issue our editor tells us to "Give Up Our Aul Sins" (A Dublin colloquialism) and chats about our preparation for Lent. Vincent Travers assures us there is "NO Condemnation in God" and John Scally asks us not to forget and writes a wonderful article about the life of Anne Frank. Brendan Clifford O.P. writes about "Living With Loss" and Marie Therese Cryan writes about the tradedgy of the kidnapping of Charles Lindbergh Jr. in 1927. 
There is so much to read in our wonderful magazine, I am sure it will fill your heart and your mind.

During February we celebrate the feast days of St Brigid and St Valentine and in our magazine this month are accounts of their fascinating lives.  Let articles ‘87’ ( which refers to the Psalm ) and  ‘On Lourdes and the Everyday Miraculous’ bring you on a journey from the grim prison where Jesus was held before his crucifixion, to the joyous dance of the birds in Lourdes and the faith which a sweet little strawberry can evoke. ‘Supporters’ Page’ has a poignant, but inspiring celebration of the love between twin sisters which transcends death.  Maurice Fearon’s article on the Bible challenges us Catholics to really come to grips with a Book we too often neglect.
