Emperor in Disney’s animated Mulan. I found the quote
rings true both to myself and the Tatler Asia magazines
for surviving the year 2020 with its radical changes due
to the Covid-19 pandemic.

The Art of Life
Fashion for society, a tenet now we, at Tatler Indonesia, holds when it comes to curating and crafting the contents within. Just shy of one year since we rede- signed the magazine and its digital channels, I hope our hard work since then is much evident today. Entering into April, we extend this theme into the showbiz world with two stars this country is familiar
with: Jeremy Thomas and Luna Maya. Although they represent two different decades and gender groups, both talents share the same passion for fashion and artistry in content-making. Read more in Raising the Bar for a riveting read about where their artistic visions have taken them to a peak of success and fame.
 Going deeper into the arts, we are honoured to have Guntur Soekarno guest-write about his photography hobby and showcase some portfolios. Guntur is one of five children of Indonesia’s first president, Soekarno, from his marriage to Fatmawati. Sharing the same penchant for the arts as his father, Guntur explores the beauty of Indonesian women. After a long hiatus from the photography world, his return proves that time has not dulled anything; see the article In the Eyes of the Beholder. Next, read Go West for a special interview with Chloe Zhao upon best director at the Golden Globes. The first Asian woman to do so, and the second woman ever, her story and journey until today is a heartening example of women staying true to themselves to achieve success.
On that note, the story Bright Lights of the Hearts nicely round our wholesome articles this month with a lineup of modern Indonesian women finding their inspirations in R.A. Kartini. The latter is a respected heroine who helped women reached emancipation and earned education during the colonial era, a vision shouldered today by the Maria Lukito Foundation and these ten ladies. After feasting your eyes on their lavish kebaya and kain, finish it off with a visit to our fashion pages and all the latest styles.

We The Women, March has always been a fun month for the team at
Tatler Indonesia and myself due to International Women’s
Day—a theme perfectly embodied in our cover muse,
Dewi Sukarno. To say that Dewi is a beautiful and
strong woman would be oversimplifying the wisdom
and wit that has made her an endearing and enduring presence anywhere she goes. 
Many readers might have been familiar with her story as the third wife of
the late President Sukarno. Met and wed during the
founding father’s last living decade, Dewi had to leave
her homeland in Japan for a brief yet blissful married
life here. Soon, however, the political instability in
Indonesia forced her to flee abroad and only allowed
scant goodbye with her dear husband on his deathbed.
Fast forward a few decades and countries she’s moved
around, we caught up with the lovely lady to see what
Dewi has been up to and what’s next for her. Moreover,
our editors also talked to three other prominent women
to see how women fare and flourish in today’s Indonesian society. 
The article System of Support paints quite a
picture of the successes and struggles that helped shape
them to be the inspiring leaders we see today. We list
more eminent figures in society within our inaugural
Indonesia’s Most Influential: Culture List, which falls
under the regional umbrella Asia’s Most Influential

We Are Family

For many among us, February is a celebratory month of love for romantic notions. However, I beg to differ. This month should likewise be to appreciate all types of love, especially for our family, friends and Mother Earth. Moreover, showing our love through actions should extend beyond February. In that spirit, this edition touches upon the different aspects of love and see them through the contexts we live on today.

One great example is in Love is A Many-Splen- doured Thing. We talk to experts and practitioners about modern dating life and how to keep relation- ships healthy. Then there are stories of friendships between ladies who bicycle and the lovely Hans Huang—all of which are surviving the Covid-19 pan- demic. The coronavirus reminds us also to take better care of the environment; three familiar faces show
us how they garden at home in Rub of the Green.

Our cover story, meanwhile, balances up nicely the love for family and self. The young heiress Jacqueline Sariman is pursuing her passion in the startup world Tatler together with the work she inherits in her family’s 10 empire; no small feat, I would say, for which I applaud
and encourage her all the more. Of course, to show our appreciations for those around us, small tokens of love would help amp up the affections. Scrolling through these trendy pages, our editors have rounded up lists of fashionable and precious items to have and to hold.
Turn the pages to our Wish List, which is all about the latest wardrobe from top to toe. Some of the same designers featured here are also making a comeback in Keeping House, this time for haute homeware. So, pop a bottle of champagne, doll up the dining room and put on your best fashionable foot forward: it’s timeto celebrate love and its many-splendoured things. Chin-chin!

Season of Grace
Amid the uncertainties happening in 2020 with the Covid-19 pandemic still at large, December is a time to celebrate and to be thankful. Even for the smallest ­daily joys, this is the season to stay optimistic and look ­forward to a better year ahead. Tatler Indonesia ­continues to be present in its printed form all year long, and we are proud to close the year with a bang by unveiling the ­Impact List. Standing alongside their regional counterparts, in this list are the ten leaders and changemakers from around Indonesia. They are the ones who are preserving against all odds and now recognized as forces of good in society. Read the complete list of 100 names across all industries inside.
On the note of power and purpose, we talk to the young leader Natalia Kusumo who is taking part in her family business, Agung Sedayu Group. With a sweeping vision to develop a new township in the Pantai Indah Kapuk (PIK) area, her ideas and concepts brought a fresh perspective to the developments by the property giant (read more in “The Good Life”). See some more photos of the picturesque landscapes in the area, such as Pantjoran PIK and Pasir Putih Beach, together with the road-cycling group of May Farida and Friends. In “All Kitted Out”, she further elaborates why the sport is not only fun but also beneficial for health—something to strive for as we turn a new page.
Finally, our team of editors present more engaging ­stories from our society to further reflect on the lessons we could learn this year and carry on the next. Turn the pages to “Live Long and Prosper” to read the letters of Christine Hakim, Dennis Adhiswara, Arifin Putra and Nadine Alexandra to their younger selves. These ­narrators of the Diam and Dengarkan documentary take a look at their journeys so far, and how they could best continue onward. Happy birthday to us! Novembers are always ­memorable for the family of Tatler Indonesia because it is our ­anniversary month, and even more so this year since we are celebrating our second decade. It is a historic moment for Tatler Indonesia to have grown in the Asia Tatler ­family beyond changing our magazine name and page layout back in March. Akin to being baptized and changed subsequently, it was a time of rebranding and redesign: a continuous process we are still going through to serve better our longtime readers and growing communities in Indonesia and around Asia.
Power, influence and style: our three tenets sum up the core of what Tatler Indonesia has always been about, and will be evolving into, as the meaning of these words ­expands to reflect the New Asia. The ­actor ­Wulan ­Guritno who stars as the cover muse for this special ­edition perfectly embodies the Tatler spirit. Read more in ­“Portrait of A Star” to see her power and ­influence as a leading lady in the Indonesian ­entertainment industry. Guritno’s style is no doubt the epitome of what a classic and elegant beauty one would expect to see within these pages, and yet she also brings about a breath of fresh air and creative change. 
Similarly, we go deeper behind each topic presented here, including one of my favourite features that touch upon Felipe Oliveira Baptista carrying the Kenzo legacy forward after the iconic designer’s recent passing (“Going Places”). More coverages on fashion and beauty trends are always abounding here, but, a must-read is “Let’s Go Slow”, in which our editors talk to four Indonesian ­fashion designers about sustainability and slow fashion.
Last but not least, I would like to thank all of our ­loyal readers, inspiring sources and noteworthy clients who have supported Tatler Indonesia for the past 20 years.

As many of our loyal readers have long known and wait with bated breath, October means the launch of Asia’s Most Stylish in all Asia Tatler editions across eight countries. We now proudly present a new take on the prestigious list with a total of 100 names across categories ranging from the Iconoclasts, Classicists, Interpreters, and Immaculates, filled with those who fit into our tenets of style, power and influence.

The names recognized here have their trademarks on a singular style, all done effortlessly to embody their personalities. Some also have a rebellious streak to push the limits in dressing to trailblaze new trends. Ferry Salim is among eight representatives from Indonesia, and I invite you to find out inside the rest of these familiar faces. I would also like to personally thank our Committee who have helped us chose these names: Shannon Hartono, vice president of Time International; designer Sebastian Gunawan; photographer Nicoline Patricia Malina; stylist Alva Susilo; and fashionista-cum-restaurateur Ezra William.

Further entertaining you with fashionable stories, as always, our pages are full of exhaustible lists of the latest trends from the runway, and straight off the display cases

of high watch-makers and jewellers. Special spotlights in this edition go to Louis Vuitton with its LV Volt jewellery and Exotic bags, as well as Richard Mille, Hublot and Rolex each with its own latest releases. On the homefront, our “Pride of Indonesia” column returns with a sequel of the Batik for the World event featuring global leaders and their shared love for this particular intangible heritage. So, wait no longer and dig into these treasures from the comforts of your couches to stay socially distanced.

Here we are, in the last quarter of the year, living in a strange time where so many changes are unfolding ­rapidly right in front of us. Some of you might have ­resumed most activities outside the house, while some others are still hunkering inside to minimize the risk of contracting the coronavirus. Everyone is adjusting to the new reality and normality, including Malaysian ­businessman Justin Lim who graces this month’s ­cover. Although some of his investment ideas are pending a more ­favourable ­economic and travel climates, Lim is quick to create new plans and to pivot his businesses with Hemera International Group in Indonesia and ­Malaysia. Read more about his foray into healthcare through ­strategic partnerships in the “Line of Vision” cover story.
Elsewhere in this issue, we talk to more visionaries who are building their futures, and the next generation’s, through a range of professions. There is Maye Musk, a senior supermodel who earned the status at the age of 69 with more achievements worth to know other than being Elon Musk’s mother. On a more dynastic perspective, the Assouline family touches on the next chapter of its famous publishing house known for those big, bold and beautiful coffee-table books that decorate your libraries and living rooms. Moreover, not to forget homegrown stories, our editors visited and tasted four legendary ­eateries around Jakarta to find out their succession plans and secrets behind their longevity, having weathered ­decades of changes including the Covid-19 ­pandemic. These ­restaurants are my family’s personal longtime ­favourites, and perhaps yours also, so I encourage you to read more on “Legends are Made”.
Moving on to the fashion front, Tatler Indonesia is proud to share news from two renowned maisons, ­Louis Vuitton and Cartier, about their latest collections of ­accessories to have and to cherish.

Welcome to summer, and to the month we celebrate ­Indonesia and its people. Of course, Tatler Indonesia ­always aims to be your lens to the country’s fashionable high society: those who are powerful, influential and ­stylish. This month, however, is made even more special for many reasons including Indonesia’s Independence Day, and the sixth month of Tatler Asia magazines’ ­redesign. Just like the thriving communities we serve, our brand is always growing and ever-expanding to ­inform on the latest and best of what matters in life. 
On this sunny note, I would like to introduce our c­over girl of the month, Shandy Purnamasari, who ­embodies grit and grace even in the face of today’s ­uncertainties in the cover story, “She’s All That”. As the owner of MS Glow Aesthetic Clinics and its line of body and ­beauty care products, her business has also suffered during the Covid-19 pandemic. Read on inside how she ­maintains a positive outlook in the beauty business, and the plans Purnamasari creates to make sure that her ideas of ­expansion are viable. 
Similarly overcoming obstacles both from inside and outside one’s self are Raline Shah and Shannon Lee, two prominent figures of the entertainment world in their respective rights. Be inspired by their stories this month about tackling mountains, literally and figuratively, which gives a hint that the future is female. Worry not to the male readers as we do highlight your equal role in creating a better world, in which Sean Lee-Davies joined in Raline’s journey to the Uhuru peak for a good cause. Jayden Joachim Lembong and his essay, featured alongside seven other youths from around Asia, is also worth noting here for they are the voices of this generation.
Wrapping it up sweetly with notes on fashion as ­always, it is only apt that we give spotlights to our rich cultures of traditional fabrics. On one side is Patricia ­Mayoree that represent the younger generation’s ­interest and love to know more about these beauties.

In the blink of an eye, half of this year has whizzed by swiftly. The world itself is a much-changed place as countries slowly emerge from their toils against the Covid-19 pandemic, including Indonesia. The new normal not only means a cautious crowd weary of the unseen virus, but also a persevering people is ready to begin anew. Self-care beyond bodily health and hygiene comes to the forefront as staying mostly at home for a prolonged time highlights the importance of mental health.

Kelly Tandiono, our fit and fantastic cover muse, is the example of a strong soul inside and out. As a fitness fanatic, her love for sports takes on a new meaning as Tandiono finds motivations and strength throughout the day. Although the fashion and movie industries she’s working in as a model and actress are impacted, this leading lady is not slowing down and looks ahead with confidence. See for yourself what she’s up to in our cover story, “Scent of a Woman”.

Besides Tandiono’s, we also serve a colourful myriad of stories all about those who are reaching their highs, which is a fun yet competitive case when it comes to esports. Turn over to “Revenge of the Nerds” and see how competitive gaming is gaining recognition in Asia and beyond with big brands chiming in. Similarly overcoming adversities in all its shapes and forms, we feature two more high-achieving Indonesians in the monthly “Tat-

ler Hot List” together with other inspiring figures from around the region.

As always, our July issue is packed with curated choices from makeup to watches, jewellery and anything in between to ensure everyone is looking their best while working from home. The beauty, mystery, and depth of womanhood with its different aspects has continued to intrigue many to this day, including myself as a woman: from simply being her gender to the qualities she is possessing, how she is viewed as part of a community and so much more. For prime examples, we have invited four prominent women from their respective industries to talk about how they lead the way during this time of change, and how they prepare for what lies ahead when “the new normal” settles in. Turn to our cover story, Angels Among Us, and see why Veronika Linardi, Wulan Tilaar, Imelda Harsono and Veronica Colondam are the salt of the society during this hard time.

Two more beautiful ladies also grace our June issue with their inspiring stories about being agents of change in their ways and generations, firstly is the wonderful Jane Goodall on the finer points of resilience and hope, two things we are in much need of these days, and also about her passion in anthropology and conservation. Carrying that same spirit of pioneering and chasing one’s vision is the young Elena Lokman who is joining a nautical trip from Perth to Cape Town as part of the eXXpedition journey around the world. I find that her research and message for a better world with no plastic pollution is what we need to hear today to create a sustainable way of living for generations to come.

More amazing stories about the role of women in Asia and beyond can be found in this issue, ranging from the women in the wine world to the activists, authors and entrepreneurs driving conversations about freedom and equality across the region, and many others. Delve deeper into these engaging reads and then I invite you to be part of the conversation in your communities. There are so much more important talking points in this issue worth noting here, but for the sake of space, I welcome you to go inside the hearts of women and see for yourself what womanhood is all about.

Looking at the current state of the world we’re living in as the COVID-19 pandemic is taking its toll, the future is what we are looking forward to as major historical moments are unfolding right in front of very our own eyes; the future is here, and the future is today. As such, the coronavirus, education and the apocalypse, are three keywords we put forth in long narrations over at this month’s Features section reflect on today’s stories and how they will shape our future’s new normal.
Everyone is pitching in their own ways to fight the coronavirus and its unprecedented global effects, which is why we highlight eight generous souls as our cover stars, read more in “Heroes” who come from diverse sets of backgrounds but are united to rally others to combat both the virus itself, and the toll it takes on humanity in general. I am thoroughly thankful to Dato Sri’ Tahir, Rosan Roeslani, Maia Mussry, Cathy Sharon, Najwa Shihab, Patricia Mayoree, Mesty Ariotedjo and Alfatih Timur for providing a platform of voice and action that helps unite the country during this tough time.
Amid all these uncertainties, preparing for the worst to come is a normal reaction of the human nature as we’ve seen people stocking in, and even hoarding up, essentials to face the movement restriction order in its varying shape and form. Some people take their preparations a step further by positing the scenario of an apocalypse, which goes beyond just an everyday doomsday prepper and are doing it with the Tatler flair and panache; read more in “How to Throw Money at the Problem”.
On a more grounded note, almost literally, we present a better alternative to prevent such further tears in the fabrics of society from happening anymore by preparing the next generation. Our children is the future, the ones who would face all of the consequences we have done to the earth today, and we need to equip them properly while trying to slow down the rate of our own irreversible actions.

Fashion, technology and sustainability. What do these three words have in common? Well, for one they are the over-arching themes in this month’s Tatler Indonesia. Delving a little deeper, I’m sure that you, like me, have been seeing positive moves by the fashion industry to green itself and to be more sustainable given that it has such a huge impact on the planet. I’m proud to say that local brands are doing their bit, too. Read more in “Down to Earth”, which focuses on Fashion Rhapsody 2020 as initiated by designers Ariy Arka, Ayu Dyah Andari, Chintami Atmanagara and Yulia Fandy. At the event, the audience was encouraged to show its love of the Earth—the inspiration for all the designers at the fashion show. Sustainability Tatler and positive change through 14 technology are also at the forefront Greenhope—a company co-founded by Tommy Tjiptadjaja and Sugianto Tandio. Tommy has contributed an inspiring article to this issue detailing his company’s mission and why young people need to have seats at the table when discussing climate change and environmental impact. Meanwhile, we need look no further than our own shores to see moves to ensure that cities and their citizens remain protected in the face of climate change, pandemics and other threats in “Future Proof”. As regards Indonesia, our government has been one of the most proactive in the region in taking solid steps to mitigate against disaster by relocating the capital city. Let’s hope that this ground-up project incorporates as much green technology as possible—the signs are already encouraging.
Lastly, I want to talk about our cover star—the inimitable Agnez Mo, who, in many ways, embodies every one of our themes.

Welcome to the March edition of Tatler Indonesia. I’m guessing you won’t have missed the re-think of the magazine from cover to content that we’re serving you this month. This is part of an Asia-wide redesign of all the regional Tatler titles and brings the magazine bang up to date with a thoroughly modern look—one that we feel aptly reflects its brand DNA and our readers’ sophisticated tastes. Rather than me telling you exactly what we’ve changed (which would take a very long time and involve complex technical and typological terms that would only bore you) I’ll let you savour each new style and section. Don’t worry, we’re still “us”, and you can expect the same wit and wisdom in every issue.
Meanwhile, to really underscore our commitment to bringing you only the very best, the magazine runs to more than 250 pages. It’s a very special issue for sure and definitely a keeper.
This month, our big, fab feature “The New Asia” showcases those notable personalities whom we feel embody our three most-important Tatler mainstays of power, style and influence. With three separate cover stars drawn from it—namely Arnold Putra, Kezia Toemion and Rayi Putra Rahardjo alongside Nindy Ayunda—this extended photo-driven essay packs out an impressive 130 pages. The feature focuses on many special friends from all the regional issues of the magazine, as well as some from beyond Asia’s shores, and delves into the heart of what makes us all so special.
We still tackle weighty matters, of course. In this issue, for example, we have a chat with Kartika Soekarno, the founder of the Kartika Soekarno Foundation, who has found her calling by returning to her roots. Having spend much of her life overseas, she was moved by the plight of kids who suffered after the 1998 economic collapse. As a result, she founded the organisation to give those kids a head start in life. Read her story in “Live and Learn”. 
There’s so much more and so little space here so do dive right in.

All You Need is Love
Love is a many-splendoured thing, and this being the February Valentine’s issue, we’ve taken this to heart—pun intended! Not only do we focus on some of the more obvious themes in articles about romance, but we take “love” as an aspect of devotion to oneself, one’s calling in life, and even to one’s country and culture. We kick off, for example, with our cover story, “Eclectic Ethnic”, in which we chat with Sarah Zafria, a passionate interior designer. Sarah has worked all around the world with many high-profie clients, but she never forgets her Indonesian roots and often incorporates accents and materials from her home country, to which she is devoted.

So here we are in 2020—our 20th anniversary year, as it happens. Many of you will have made New Year’s resolutions on December 31—perhaps light-heartedly and with a little bit of the party spirit in you—but it’s never a bad time to shed old habits and begin anew in any aspect of our lives. In recognition of this, and acknowledging that our readership is ever on the go, we, along with the other Asia Tatler titles, have put together a complication of hip hotspots for toning up that torso, shedding a few kilos, or simply giving your heart a good workout in “New Decade, New You”.

First off, I’d like to thank all who joined us at the Indonesia Tatler Ball 2019 in Surabaya at the end of November. Needless to say, the event was a roaring success, while the reasons we held it in Surabaya and not Jakarta for the first time are twofold. First, attention is already shifting away from Jakarta and to other parts of this vast, varied country as it gears up for a new capital city, so it seemed sensible for us to look further afield for a venue. Second: that search took us all the way to Surabaya—after all, this thriving metropolis has much going for it. A booming economy, a social scene that rivals Jakarta’s, a legion of elite VVIPs who are bringing both business nous and glam to the city, and a heady mix of eateries, clubs, bars, cafés, and so much more, all of which made this a natural choice for the year’s biggest social event. So natural, in fact, that we have now launched Indonesia Tatler Surabaya to celebrate all these achievements and the many more to come. I do hope you join us in wishing the city and the magazine much success in the future.

So what can you expect from Indonesia Tatler itself this December? Well, if you hadn’t noticed (and if you’ve not visited any major mall since, say, the beginning of November), Christmas and the New Year’s celebrations are upon us. I don’t know how you celebrate these events, but I do know how the Colombians, Russians, French, and Finnish do. How? I simply turned to our article “Joy to the World” in which we talk to the ambassadors of these countries to find out how they celebrate the festive season. Meanwhile, in our cover story, newlywed dr Natasha Cinta Vinski gives us insight into her life, her recent wedding, and her burgeoning businesses. For sure, her life is no “walk in the park”, as they say—despite the shoot taking place in the greenery of Kalimantan.

Beautiful Birthdays
“Blink and you’ll miss it!” Such is how we sometimes refer to the passing of time, meaning that if you don’t live for the now—which is also one of my favourite maxims—you’ll simply be an observer as life passes you by. Carpe diem! Seize the day! It’s also an apt segue when it comes to talking about our cover story (“The Good Life”), which focuses on Nia Ramadhani Bakrie, Blink Beauty Clinic’s ambassador. A regular at Blink, it was only natural that Nia was chosen as the brand’s ambassador. She also epitomises the idea of not only living a good life and instilling virtuous values in her children, but also of packing in as many positive experiences as she can into her busy schedule, while remaining thankful for all of today’s blessings. That really is the best definition of seizing the day as I can think of. For our cover shoot, Nia is decked out in Balenciaga, and, as always, we’ve packed tons more fashion into this November issue. Whether it’s the latest in men’s trends (“On the Run”), which take their cues from The Matrix and Blade Runner, or women’s style (“The Day After Tomorrow”), with its industrial and utilitarian leanings, I’m sure there’s something for everyone’s wardrobe tastes this month.
Elsewhere in the magazine this month, you can read all about master craftsman and conceptual designer Ted Sulisto in “Passion Projects” as well as join us on a trip to Papua New Guinea in “Land Before Time”, which goes into great detail about the culture and people that abound in this otherworldly and oft-shunned travel destination. On a lighter note, my very close friend and a regular in Indonesia Tatler’s pages, Patty Kaunang, recently celebrated her birthday in sensational style with an amazing costume party, as you’ll see in “Dazzling Do”. Oh, and did I mention it’s our birthday this month? Yes, we’ve just turned 19 years old.

October is a bit of a weird month, right? In the West, it marks the onset of winter; here, I’m sure that you’re praying for rain if you live in Jakarta. I’ve not seen the city so dry and dusty for a long time. Anyway, as always Indonesia Tatler is a reliable way to take your mind off the heat and find intellectual and inspiring respite, as well as style, grace, and even spiritual enlightenment. Following in this vein, our cover story this month, entitled “All of Me”, profiles the amazing life of Uci Flowdea, who has poured her heart into both her work in the timber industry and matters of a less-material and more-religious nature. Fittingly giving praise that God has blessed her with success in her chosen career path, she gives back to society and her Maker and thus fulfils the central tenet of most religions—by tending to the poor and hosting weekly prayer meetings for around 200 people. Many of us could do with taking a leaf out of her book, as the English idiom goes.

The magazine is also packed with inspirational stories of other people, like Chef Nicola Affatati, who helms the kitchen at the Shangri-La Hotel, Surabaya’s Sapore Osteria restaurant. Meanwhile, we also chat with Patrick Vaysse of TAUZIA Hotel Management Indonesia, who shares with us his story of some 30 years spent in the hospitality industry.

The astute among you—and I know from experience that this is pretty much all of you—will notice a few tweaks and modifications o the layouts and design of this month’s Indonesia Tatler. Rather than an all-out rethink of the content, we’ve reworked a few things to stay relevant to our readers and to keep ahead of the curve when it comes to modern magazine trends. 


The power of love

This  july issue of Indonesia Tatler is so special to me, as it focuses on what drives and unites all of us—love. As you will see from our special wedding-themed cover story, which features the details behind Reino Barack and Syahrini’s idyllic romance, this is an issue with a purpose: to shine a light on what you can do to make the biggest day of your lives all the more meaningful. As well as focusing on wedding style and accessories in a special Weddings section, we feature a number of destinations that would be perfect to make that special day the most memorable day of your lives—and keep your guests talking about it long after you return from your honeymoon. And did I mention that many of these locations are just a short hop away from wherever you are based? After all, Indonesia offers up so many exotic locations and venues that you’re totally spoilt for choice. If, however, you’re already happily married, happily single, or not quite ready to tie the knot yet, we do, of course, offer many delightful diversions for you, too. Take your pick: whether it’s the cover story about our 2019 Generation T (Gen.T) awardees Andini Effendi, Dayu Dara, Felicia Kawilarang, and Santi Alaysius in “New Wave”; our picks of the best dining spots in town that are perfect now that the fasting season is over; or the very latest in high-society news, there is something for everybody. While this is a time of celebration, it’s also a time when you should appreciate what you have, and also consider those who are less fortunate in life. This issue, we are also presenting you with something special: a supplement dedicated to the fast-paced city of Surabaya. Inside you will also discover plenty of style tips and tricks straight from the runway special for the gents in your life to get ready for summer.Speaking of summer and the holidays, back in the magazine, we also take a surfin break to Siargao in the Philippines as one of my favourite Indonesia Tatler writers, Nanda Haensel, heads to the beach in search of the perfect wave. Long known as a secret hideaway for those in the know, my advice to you now would be to head there before the crowds turn up also looking to harness the incredible power of the ocean. Travel is a big part of this issue, but I’ll leave you to delve into the magazine to discover the finest experiences ou can have in this part of the world and beyond.What more is there to say other than I hope your holidays and family events are always full of love and laughter. Well, after a hectic April, mercifully packed with days off work and the generation-definin election, I can safely say that May means a magical whirlwind of wonderful content in this month’s issue of Indonesia Tatler. Starting at the very beginning—with our cover story, that is—we get the chance to delve into the life and world of someone I admire greatly and whom I count as a firm friend: rwan Danny Mussry. Regular readers and those in the know will recognise the name—Irwan is the owner and CEO of Time International—although some will not be familiar with the man and his vision. Irwan’s first orays into the world of watches and high-end lifestyles came as a direct result of his first-hand experience o bad service, and, with that in mind, he has dedicated his career to not only showcasing the world’s leading timepieces, but also to providing exemplary customer service. Read all this and more in “Our Time”.Another strong personality we feature this month is Binod Chaudhary, Nepal’s first (and currently, only) billionaire. Discover Binod’s fascinating story in “The Sky’s the Limit”, in which you’ll read about his early life as a hippie with leanings towards travel, music, and Bollywood movies to becoming a business mogul thanks, in part, to the Asian staple of noodles. Intrigued? Read more in our exclusive story of the life of this extraordinary individual.Of course, Indonesia Tatler believes in gender balance, so I’d also like to draw your attention towards our interviews with four mums and their lovely children in conjunction with Mother's Day. With each lady coming from a different background, their approach to parenting is something we can all learn from. As well as our chat with these inspiring figues, we also feature Hakkasan Jakarta, a dynamic new culinary destination, in our Dining Out section: “Love at First Bite” is the appropriate title given to this story of this hip new restaurant that is all set to become a city staple.

Indonesia Tatler is never afraid to tackle heavyweight subjects: recently, we’ve covered environmental issues, charities that help rebuild shattered lives, women’s empowerment, as well as our Asia-wide Generation T initiative. So this issue’s main story (well, one of them) about President Joko Widodo needs no introduction. I don’t want to wax lyrical about Jokowi despite his many achievements—suffice it to say that in “Man of Action”, you can be reminded of the achievements of this humble and adept politician.
Instead, I’d love to draw your attention to our cover story about the wonderful Martha Tilaar and her daughter, Wulan. In “Traditional Treasures”, we trace the development of the Martha Tilaar Group (MTG) from its beginnings following a singular event in Martha’s life to her delving into local wisdom to develop her products through to MTG’s role in providing employment opportunities to individuals who may otherwise not be able to reach even the lowest rung on a career ladder. Martha and Wulan are true Indonesian greats who have learned and evolved by experience, and who are now looking at regional (and, we hope and pray, global) expansion of the Martha Tilaar Spa brand.
Elsewhere, and somewhat in reverse to Martha’s story, we devote several pages to looking at the launch of Amanyangyun, a much-anticipated opening from the globally famous Aman Group in Shanghai, China. Counting five Aman resorts in existence around Indonesia, its experience in bringing international know-how into a local market is well proven. And staying on the subject of hospitality, we also talk to Stéphanie de Boüard-Rivoal about Château Angélus and traditional winemaking in the modern era. Stéphanie, the eighth generation and third woman to head her estate since its founding in 1782, regards her vocation as “priestly”, and having read the article I have to agree with her.

For some wealthy individuals, being rich just isn’t enough—they are driven by a sense of charitable duty to give something back to society, and many of these excellent people live in Asia. After all, we know that many of our richest started with very little and so feel (and rightly so) that they owe the society that gave them a “leg up” a slice of their wealth, thus hopefully helping to develop a new generation of achievers and givers. So, this issue, with the assistance of the other Asia Tatler titles, we’ve rounded up the “50 Philanthropists Changing the World” from the region. We are blessed to call many of these people friends, like Dato’ Sri Prof. Dr Tahir MBA and Quintessentially’s Inti Nusantari Subagio. Who are the others? Read the story to find out, but please do consider our very own Maria Lukito Foundation—dedicated to supporting the education and life chances of youngsters in Indonesia—when it comes to supporting charity yourselves. We detail the work of this charity and other good works that come courtesy of our Generation T awardees in “Wishing Well”.
What else is there to say about this issue? There is, of course, the cover story, which focuses on Livienne Russelia, who shares with us the inside story of her success in the beauty world (“Beauty Queen”). Livienne is the very embodiment of perseverance and a try, try, and try again attitude. After government regulations tightened up in 2006 in the area in which she was working, she decided to focus on a niche market: 100 per cent Indonesian goat’s milk products. After that, she then turned her talented hands to Cakra Daya Makmur, under which body care and cosmetics brands are now produced from its integrated factories—her degree combination of business with pharmaceutical and cosmetic science have, undoubtedly, helped her on her way.

Gracing our month-of-love cover are Christian Soeseno Boenarso, Adinda Kuntadi, Jovita Widjaja, Ramadhania Bakrie, Vannya Istarinda, Arsyah Rasyid, and Maudy Ayunda. Read how this diverse set of socialites and business people balance their lives and careers—and totally love what they do—in “Full Hearts”. This, happily, is a neat transition into talking about matters of the heart. Love certainly is a many-splendoured thing: did you know (says the Internet) that there have been more love songs written than the number of stars visible in the night sky? In “Love is in the Air”, we talk to three star-crossed couples about their relationships and what keeps them ticking. The answers may surprise you, especially those who feel that the art of romance is dead in this era of Tinder and hasty hook-ups.
We also take a foodie’s trip around the ancient Kingdom of Khmer at SaigonSan—which draws inspiration from all around the region Thailand, Myanmar, Laos, Cambodia, Vietnam, Malaysia, and Singapore—and all set in a fabulously regal setting, hence the article’s title, “Kingly Cuisine”. While on a culinary theme, don’t forget to check out our tale of best pals Dita Soedarjo and Angela Tee bonding over Chinese New Year and Valentine’s Day cuisine at PASOLA at The Ritz-Carlton Jakarta, Pacific Place. You may also want to stop by “Atlantic Record” and dip your toes into the icy waters of what it takes to run a Michelin-starred restaurant in one of the coldest places you’re likely to set foot in.
We also chat with pop legend Engelbert Humperdinck, dubbed “The King of Romance” by coincidence, who is due to perform here next month. The 82-year-old has sold more than 140 million records worldwide, earned four Grammy nominations, and a Golden Globe. His 1967 single “Release Me” went into the Guinness Book of Records for achieving 56 consecutive weeks on the charts and was number one in 11 countries. Impressed? It’s that time of the year when well-intentioned New Year’s resolutions are earnestly made, only to be broken days, weeks, or months later depending on your level of commitment. Actually, there’s nothing about the New Year that marks it out as a special time for fashioning a better you, and I urge you to always seek ways to better yourself. This is what Grace Natalie has done (“The Good Fight”) in her fledgling career in politics. Active since 2014, her party stands against intolerance and bigotry among other things—something the world very much needs these days.
In this issue, we also chat with a band made up of luminaries from various fields. In “Sing Along”, you can read all about the music that Deddy Kusuma, Tusyana Suryadi, Albert Halim, Rina Salim, and Rudi Akili make together, and if you have a musical bone in your body, why not consider joining them? There’s no better way to express yourself than through music, although the graceful movements of Mitra Tari Hadiprana come very close. This group of ladies is dedicated to taking their classical Javanese dance workouts very seriously. In “Making Their Moves”, you can read how this form of moving meditation trains minds, bodies, and souls—and keeps an Indonesian tradition alive.
There’s a journalistic term called “burying the lede” (yes, that’s how it’s properly spelled), which means delaying the main thrust of an article until well into the text, which is what I’ve done by not talking about our cover story yet. Well, I do like to keep the best until last, and this issue’s cover story covers hard work, enterprise, and a commitment to family. It could be none other than Susanti Tio, of course, who packs her days full of trading and mining-related work but still makes time for her loved ones. Read more in “Hidden Treasures”.

For those of you who celebrate it, there’s no need to remind you about what’s coming up later this month. Already, the shops are festooned with festive Christmas decorations, and it’s time to think of that perfect gift for your loved one. And nothing says “I love you” to a woman more than a diamond. We also chat with Peggy Hartanto, who is shining a light on Indonesian fashion on the global stage. Designed for the intelligent urban Indonesian woman, and with a recent showcase in Paris, Peggy is now poised to propel her local brand into the stratosphere. Read more in “Out of this World”. And staying on an interstellar theme, in this issue we also feature an interview and profile of philanthropist Yuri Milner and his wife, Julia. They are posing the ultimate question: is there other life out there in a far-distant galaxy? Read more in “Written in the Stars”.
Meanwhile, we take a look back at last month’s 18th Tatler Ball, where our good friends, VVIP guests, and even a royal couple enjoyed spectacular sights, sounds, and a scrumptious meal. If you weren’t there, don’t worry: we’ve collated a photo-led section devoted to this most desirable of social events. At this point, I’d also like to thank all of our sponsors, who made the event both possible and worthwhile, and to thank all those who participated in the auction that night and in the silent auction that followed. In total, we have already raised more than Rp305 million for the Maria Lukito Foundation, aimed at giving the young ones a leg up in their educational lives.
This time of year is one in which many of us give our time, love, energy, and money to help out those less fortunate than ourselves.

It wasn’t all that long ago, it seems, that we are mourning the loss of so many affected by the earthquakes in Lombok. Then, as if to defy the saying that lightning never strikes twice, Palu city and Donggala Regency in Central Sulawesi were hit by a powerful tremor, as well as subsequent aftershocks, that razed infrastructure to the ground and which resulted in a tsunami that literally swept whole towns off their feet and to needless deaths, leaving survivors with little food, fresh water, medical aid, and other necessities. We may never know the full extent of the tragedy, such is the remoteness of some of the areas hit, but we can safely say that thousands lost their lives and many countless more lost their livelihoods. For those who have been moved by the plight of so many, we have uploaded a special web resource on www.IndonesiaTatler.com that gathers together in one place information about the many ways that one can give. After all, it may be some weeks since disaster struck, but rebuilding shattered lives takes years.
I won’t diminish the scale of the tragedy by being too glib this month. Instead, I’ll reflect on some of the weightier subjects tackled in this month’s Tatler. We can start with Pernik Nusantara, or Pesona Ragam Etnik Nusantara to give it its full name, which sees prominent society ladies led by Coreta Louise Kapoyos join hands with local craftspeople to present Indonesia’s rich heritage to the world. Read more in “Arts in the Crafts”. We can then move deftly to the Food Management Program devised by the remarkable Teguh Sebadja STP. This programme, the elements of which may surprise some of you, was born out of Teguh seeing his mum battle cancer and deciding to do something about it.
