碳纤维为复合材料提供了许多性能和轻量化的优点。但是，高成本已经成为碳纤维作为强劲的、增强的复合材料广泛应用的主要障碍。现在，得益于低成本制造和回收材料的增加利用，其应用范围有望进一步扩大。美国能源部橡树岭国家实验室(ORNL)展示了一种生产方法，通过这种方法，他们估计有望降低碳纤维的成本高达50%，并节省生产中所使用的能量60%以上。去年，ORNL的这种新方法获得了专利。
另一个推动低成本碳纤维增长的领域是回收选择，英国的ELG碳纤维公司是一家推动使用更多再生材料的公司。“我们普遍认为使用可回收的碳纤维有可能将纤维的成本降低40%左右。这些成本削减，加上大批量材料的安全供应、价格稳定，大大增加了碳纤维在汽车和其他运输市场的吸引力。”总经理Frazer Barnes表示。
